  1. Just seen that and when you see this from the Guardian its not good "Data from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC) showed that of 165 patients treated in critical care in England, Wales and Northern Ireland since the end of February, 79 died, while 86 survived"

    Covid-19

Heard Matt Hancock recently and it sounded like they ordered a whole pile of test kits that when tested gave false readings so back to square one. An inaccurate test is worse than no test
  3. Indeed. That looks like a mighty handy implement

    Covid-19

Bear in mind what they we call a lockdown and what China did are not comparable. My Nephew is out in China and not in a badly hit area but he basically did not go out for 2 months. They have a nominated shopper who bulk buys for many in one go. Get out on the street and have your temperature taken and you wear a mask at all times when out. Nothing like that here so we wont be able to shut it down in the same way unless we are prepared to go that far.
  5. Honestly I gave up on air dried and moved to kiln dried. Air dried in this part of the world was still some way off what is required in a home if you dont want the wood to move. When I was buying air dried and kiln dried I went to Bedford Timber in South Moulton. Steven was very knowledgable and explained how for the best boards you want trees grown in valleys away from prevailing winds as trees that were growing in windy spots had tension built into the boards which would show when planked and dried through warping. The air dried as you says needs to be stored dead flat and beautifully sticked. Never too stressed about the sealing of the ends as there were always cracks on the ends painted or not that would be cut out and ditched. Avoid direct sunlight which is brutal to fresh cut boards. If I make furniture now I use European or north American timbers that have been kiln dried as the consistent quality allowed me to buy unseen saving so much time driving to yards to checking on quality. Sad but thats how it is
  6. Think he had a woodmizer but not been there for years. He has a very large barn for storage of the boards. I thought you said you were short on storage space which will limit your market as for furniture you really want nicely dried boards IME

    Covid-19

You think so? Dreadful video as far as I am concerned but for what purpose I have no idea. The spurious "they" used here and there. The UK the WHO the papers who knows? Just an example where he says how flu data has been removed. Really? Annual flu reports - GOV.UK WWW.GOV.UK Public Health England publishes overviews each year of influenza surveillance results from the winter period. Again I am bewildered by this playing it down. Much of Europe sat on its hands as they came to us all and is now is frantically trying get the jack back in the box with the lockdowns. They are not killing their economies for laughs but to save lives. I will nail my colours to the mast and estimate that by the time this has been through the UK it will have left between 250,00 and 500,00 dead.

    Covid-19

A great explanation of how epidemics spread and can be controlled
  9. Ah yes. It looks so much better now!
  10. Post the data from the next 2 months or so and it wont look so harmless. Coronavirus has barely got started on the worlds population I have no idea why people keep playing it down. Death rates are estimated between and 1% and 3.4% and 70% of us need to have it before we get herd immunity. World populating is 7.7 billion and 70% get it thats 5.46 billion people. If just 1% die that is 546,000,000 people dead!
  11. For a bit of research it might be worth a nosey here Anton Coaker and Sherberton Farm index page WWW.ANTON-COAKER.CO.UK Anton Coaker English Timber Ltd and Sherberton Farm - Dartmoor farm selling sawn green or dried timber particularly...
  12. I use a G coupler and find it very good. What are the bad reviews about them saying?
  13. When choosing a coffin for mum we were going to go for wicker or cardboard one. The undertakers made a bit of a face. I asked what the problem was and they said the snag with both those options was they are not very rigid so proved very awkward to carry by pallbearers and they were problematic for cremation as they burnt too fast just leaving the body which was a problem for some reason. Anyway we went with their recommendation of a regular one
  14. Not looked into the wet food markets before now. Found this interesting but no idea of it accuracy .
  15. Been quite busy the last few days. Only doing BACS transfer and no help unloading but its a small price to pay to still be able to work Edit. Probably worth noting that supplying logs for heat is now classified as a key worker status http://confor.org.uk/media/247684/covid-19-confor-letter-of-comfort-for-industry-on-key-worker-status.pdf
  16. For many of our customers they are a luxury in centrally heated homes. If things are tight I can imagine logs will be low on the priority list. Then there are a few who are totally reliant on us for logs who will probably keep the wolf from the door. Not glum as such just pragmatic.
  17. Same old same old ie chopping logs. No idea if there will be a market for them next season but might as well crack on and hope for the best. Quite a few calls for processing coming in as well but might leave that for a lull in proceedings.
  18. According to the times its 17000 a year in Britain How does the coronavirus death rate compare with flu and how long will the outbreak last? WWW.THETIMES.CO.UK Covid-19 is the focus of headlines but seasonal influenza has almost certainly claimed more lives this year. The flu is...
  19. Dont fill the gap. It may be a frustrating detail but it allows the solid wood panel to expand and shrink as the humidity varies. Same as you would see on a traditional frame and panel door. If you fill it and panel expand it will blow the outer frame apart. Its why many tables use a veneered top.
  20. Oil into a 5 litre jug. Then fill jug with fuel. Pour 3/4 into the can through fine sieve. Swish last bit to get any remaining oil into suspension and pour into can. Its a faff but you can see that its perfectly mixed
  21. Ah I dont know about filling resins. Most epoxy resins are very sensitive to higher moisture content. West System wants the wood at 10% or below.
  22. Lots of good glues these days. D4 PVA is pretty good stuff and cheap. Decent polyurethane gives you a longer open time as does Cascamite. Then for Rolls Royce glue theres West system resin. Non of the above give off much odour. How dry is the wood? If its only air dried and still a touch damp your polyurethane is probably best as it uses water for the catalyst to make it set off while the rest really dont like less than perfectly dry wood.
  23. This may have been already posted but it gives some of us the go ahead to work. Following representations by Confor to the UK Government, a Defra spokesperson has confirmed: “Those involved in the supply chain of wood for key goods (including, but not limited to pallets, heating, packaging, tissue paper, timber harvesting, sawmills) should be considered key workers. Only necessary workers, producing key goods, should continue to attend workplaces. Working from home should be encouraged for administrative staff.” Confor chief executive Stuart Goodall said: “I welcome this vital clarification of the key role of the forestry and wood processing supply chain in providing wood products to support an important range of essential products.
  24. So sorry to hear of your loss. I hope time heals for you This is quite a good graphic to give some sense to how social distancing helps massively over longer periods. I would imagine the Chinese doctor who lost his life had probably been working himself into the ground which would suppress the immune system?
  25. Windy as hell. Trees down left right and centre. Was intending to clear one that came down yesterday but two more of the row came down overnight so might wait until this eases up a bit. Main road out of Tavistock is blocked a several more trees on the moors are flat this morning. Wasn't really expecting this.
