  1. Have you got any references for that? http://www.agu.org/pubs/pdf/2011EO240001.pdf "The projected 2010 anthropogenic CO2 emission rate of 35 gigatons per year is 135 times greater than the 0.26-gigaton- per-year preferred estimate for volcanoes."
  2. Anyone use Twitter? The guy who built my website set me up with an account - I'd never viewed it before and didn't really know what it was for, and I'm not entirely sure I do now. Anyway, it's work related and and not for posting mindless twaddle about the price of biscuits or which footballer has a nice new weave. If anyone is interested in 'following' me it can be found at https://twitter.com/#!/Portcullistrees or by searching for @Portcullistrees. I'm not promising anything amazing but I'm interested to see how it all works.
  3. On motorbike forums this sits nicely with the 'Which is better, shaft or chain?' thread I think it's fair to say that there is no doubt that the world has become warmer over the last 150 years. It's also pretty much a given that a correlation exists between this warming and and the burning of fossil fuels. Any inferences drawn from that are down to the individual concerned
  4. I'd never heard of it before, but I looked it up and it seems like it could be useful. However, what exactly do you want to gain from it? As a route into employment, it probably won't count for all that much. For personal development, helping you in the job you do, it could well be excellent. It looks like it's heavily geared around SPS and ES, so if these things aren't relevant to you, maybe looking at other courses would make more sense.
  5. I've never seen Brittany spaniels before - handsome beasts. I kept ESS for quite a while, including a couple of FTCs and love them, silly things that they are.
  6. You can spot the native by its form; they generally lean and the branches sweep downwards with an upturn towards the end. They are usually near rivers or on floodplains, as well as the seeds need bare mud on which to germinate and grow.
  7. Black or hybrid, but not the native black.
  8. Don't see many Haflingers these days! Great pics - looks like an excellent show.
  9. Actually got hit by a windblown rowan once. I was driving round Clougha Pike in the Forest of Bowland at the time and the damn thing leapt out at me. Luckily no major damage but it made a hell of a bang.
  10. The TA seems to take up most of the time that would otherwise be free. Apart from that I spend quite a bit of time either in the gym or running and when the chance presents itself I get on my bike and ride.
  11. Exactly. If I couldn't complete an inspection for any reason, I wouldn't call it an inspection.
  12. Seems fair enough. Also, in biological recording in general, weather conditions are noted. Not that trees only come out in nice weather...
  13. Any detail at all - especially if there is a possibility of tripping the witness up with it.
  14. Barristers will often ask for little obscure details (such as the weather) during cross examination. When the witness isn't sure, it can have the effect of reducing his/her credibility. Not saying this is the reason, but (1) it's a possibility and (2) recording those details means that you can't be caught out.

  16. Yes and no. Simply putting up a sign stating that the path exists by permission of the landowner defeats any 'as of right' claim. However, for belt and braces the sign can also state that the path is closed every Christmas (for example). Of course another option is to approach the LA and suggest that you might like to dedicate a new right of way along your chosen route. That way they get to maintain it
  17. Did they say what they thought it was? I've seen plenty of hogweed blisters and that's what they look like! (and I say again, especially the big juicy ones)
  18. They look exactly like hogweed blisters, especially the really big ones.
  19. I had one that I used for towing, but a Land Rover it is not. Even with a small trailer, you could really feel it struggling - and that was before the trailer had anything in it! Overall it was great though, and was fantastic off road and in the snow. Way better than it had any right to be. Watch out for lorry ruts on the motorway, but 'they all do that sir'.
  20. Good advice too.
  21. That was exactly what I meant. By having a route designated the highway authority, if they approve, will even waymark it for you. At the very least they would provide you with disks so you can do it yourself. Putting up signs showing that a path is permissive means that (by definition) people are not using it as of right, so can never claim any rights over your land.
  22. Rights of way.... Perfectly possible to get a diversion order, but in reality you might end up wishing you'd never started. I'd echo everything that's been said above, with the addition of 'selling' your proposed change as something that is safer/more convenient for walkers. An alternative is to set up a concessionary footpath along the field-edge route (you can even do this through the rights of way dept and get it shown on the OS map) then accidentally allow the definitive route to become 'less attractive'. It's certainly not foolproof and has the potential to come back and bite you, but I've seen it done more than once.
  23. Current ride: And some previous machines: And me mucking around at Donnington:
  24. Very cool! Takes me right back... I was a small boy during the elm clearances in the 70s and there were lots of them taken out the estate where our farm was. I spent as much time as I could watching the work, but sadly there are no photos of it.
