  1. Wangled an invite to the Jubilee lunch at Guildhall yesterday. Bumped into such minor celebreties as the the Prime Minister, Archbishop of Canterbury, Duke of York...
  2. Try this: Surrey County Council - Do you own or manage woodland in Surrey?

    Uploading Pics

Use Photobucket? Very handy for this sort of thing, it even gives you the full img code.
  4. If you want the customer to be happy, find out exactly what he wants to achieve. Does he want 30 share metres of woodchip? Possibly not. What are his long term plans for the garden? What does the guy in the wheelchair want? Is he an aspiring gardener? Maybe raised beds... Wheelchairs don't travel over woodchip (I'm guessing that's what you mean by bark, apologies if I'm wrong. Bark is far more expensive and no better for wheelchairs).
  5. Great pictures! I was there too - hung around just downstream of Tower Bridge for a while (in the pouring rain) then walked the Thames path down to the Cutty Sark. Fantastic sights and amazing to see the crowds.
  6. I'm pretty sure it's real as I've seen it before. Where is it?
  7. Gloating is something best done out of sight of the client, sometimes
  8. Words fail me. That sounds like an horrendous experience.
  9. That's a good tip, thank you. I'm setting up an 0845 number so once that's live it will go on the homepage. I'm inclined to agree with you on that - I'm not a huge fan on contact forms either and it will probably go once I have a company email account established. Thanks for the comment on the logo - I am the least artistic person I have ever met yet I designed it myself and am pretty pleased with it
  10. The guy's passed Selection - twice. That puts him in an elite club by itself, before even starting on any of his other achievements. He may well have his character flaws, but don't we all? His lack of perfection in the character department (if true) needn't detract from his obvious talents. And in the recent court case (1) he wasn't a defentant, the production company was and (2) the production company won in the Court of Appeal.
  11. In many areas the Council will be the largest user of arborists, so why not get on their list? And adjoining authorities, too. It'll mean a bit of work, but it shouldn't cost you anything other than time. Being at the bottom of the list won't necessarily matter, either, and while you obviously can't start buying bottles of Scotch for the tree officer, you can get to know him, send him pictures of work you've done, email him every couple of weeks to ask for jobs to quote on etc etc.
  12. Hard to comment without knowing the full story, but it sounds like a possible victory for the small man.
  13. Thanks for the comments - agree with everything. Just before anyone mentions, to be even pickier, they're tabs not buttons ( ) - I wrote the text with a slightly different design in mind.
  14. Here it is: portcullistrees - Home It needs a few more photos, and a little sprucing up (sorry), but it's getting there. Constructive criticism welcome
  15. Checking my mirrors before pulling out to overtake...whilst walking along the pavement!
  16. You've planted it sideways! I planted a copse of Fagus sylvatica Zlatia for the Golden Jubilee - I wonder how they're doing now...
  17. Try this one: The value of different tree species for insects and lichens Always look for other citations though, figures vary, as do interpretations of the results.
  18.
  19. I guess for similar reasons that the tourist board would pay to research potential threats to tourism or indeed DEFRA would pay to look into farming issues. The sporting shoot is an industry that creates jobs, manages land (often in ways better for biodiversity than farming) and brings in foreign currency. Personally, I am inclined against culling buzzards, particularly having led a re-establishment programme for them in the late 90s. However, this was in an area with a general raptor paucity so I can speak with little experience of areas with excesses of the things.
  20. Welcome from another new guy.
  21. Good site! I had a go at pyrography once, many years ago. I was useless.
  22. If you are committed to leaving (and it sounds like you've been thinking long and hard about this) I'd recommend doing a degree in arboriculture/urban forestry. You'll be late 30s by the time you are ready to start trading whether you go arborist or consultancy, and while people do start at that age there's a fair chance you'd want to move into consultancy after a few years anyway. You can do the various CS units whilst studying for your degree, and learn the business from the sharp end to begin with - this will be invaluable experience as a consultant later.
  23. Ah, you snook a post in while I was typing
