  5. the whitebeam may benefit from a light crown reduction say 1m - this will help reduce the chance of it failing in the next wind
  6. some pic would be handy Two Acres
  7. If it was straight and now its leaning - its moved - it could go at the root plate or if the roots have mostly rotted, the trunk fails at ground level.
  8. first impression - the whitebeam sounds well dodgy
  9. sounds terrible - why the SSSI - I hope any drastic measures wont affect the reason for the SSSI what ever that may be

  11. its south west of middle earth - hobbitsis folk live there
  12. you are confusing formative pruning with thinning - crown thinning is removing a balanced proportion of the crown to allow more light through the canopy and reduce the chance of windthrow. the other time you will see the term thinning is in a forestry / woodland situation where whole trees are felled to promote the growth of the remaining ones
  13. not seen one - thanks for posting

  21. Driftwood sculpture from Chelsea flower show:001_smile:
  22. The US is slow to adopt that proven guideline, as it might get in the way of production, and challenges the myth that collar cut = proper pruning. WHAT!!! Alex Shigo must be turning in his grave. It must be very frustrating for you in the US bud
  23. its a cherry plum - the foliage looks healthy but its probably being fed from energy reserves - for the species type I would say not looking good to be honest and no sign of reactive wood as yet - trim away the dead bark as said and see what its like next year - I always like to give a tree a chance
  24. burning up from a tree I felled in my own garden last week, and taking down an old shed - currently listening to the kings of leon - will hit the vodka soon tomorrow metal detecting
