  1. Yes Gary the gall population - will it continue to be high next year? Im no ecologist but I would expect the wasps to re infest year after year providing its has another Turkey Oak close enough and other factors are favourable. It would be interesting to compare the density of infestation on any neighbouring oaks. If neighbouring Oaks have a moderate infestation then this tree may have less vitality possibly due to other factors. If neighbouring Oaks have a similar infestation then I would speculate the reason for this would be favourable seasonal conditions and low P & D or predators.
  2. the cracks are called shake, very common in oak - the smell is from bacterial wetwood which is common in cracks
  3. Make a note of it Gary - it would be interesting to compare with next year

  14. Today I collected a sprig sample from each our 2 native oak trees. It was a good opportunity to compare the two side by side as they both have developing acorns - I also got a bonus knopper gall on the pendunculate oak to boot.

  17. you could try wounding the tree around the old pollard point to try and stimulate adventitious growth? -its worth a go surely
  18. the only think I don't like about lord of the rings is the name mount doom - sounds like something off some power rangers!!!
  19. I was going to say paint the leaves with round up but that could affect the parent tree as the are connected - you could paint the leaves with a contact weed killer though - but use a paint brush as spraying could kill parts of the lawn
  20. How is your recovery going?
