  1. Jim, you're bang on the money! And, coincidentally from what I read in your post, appear to have a very similar opinion, set-up and history to my own. Good on you! Bloody nice up there too, went to a wedding @ Lossiemouth back in '99 and stayed with a girl friend in Elgin. Didn't realise there was so much land left North of Glasgow! Hell of a journey! The majority of negative opinion in this thread appears to be from those employed in Arb. I'm happy as Larry, run my own outfit, pick my jobs, don't get involved in bidding wars and don't stress when there's nothing in the book for next week, that's what surf boards are for!
  2. Not had an app refused (yet!) I've had cases where the TO has objected but PO over ruled. Good info for the future though, BZ for posting
  3. You're right there Sparrow! We were building an extension a couple of years back which included replacing the 25yo oil boiler. Only because the boiler had to be replaced and I wanted to get off oil was it viable to instal biomass. There was the initial grant payment which went some way towards taking the edge off the cost but the empty promises over the past years regarding the domestic tariff is a disgrace! Not at all sure shale gas extraction is as straight forward and risk free as we're being led to believe either!
  4. DECC are incompetent, unreliable and ineffective viz-a-viz domestic RHI. I was waiting for domestic tariff to roll out but since its >2yrs delayed I've totally lost confidence (add to that the retraction of eligible years and its a total sham!) Going commercial tariff instead!
  5. Lots of suggestions. What's the aim (no pun intended) of the presentation? Are they paying to attend? If so, good show, how did you get that many people to part with their cash? Is is a BASC CPD type of event or a part of another event (country show or something?) Sounds interesting!
  6. Good call on reclaim where possible, might be a few bucks in it. If you have a high volume concrete/cement mixer, put them in with a couple bricks and rumble them. It's a time consuming and noisy task but it rounds the sharp edges a treat! I've used them for landscaping, if you get a good process going you can crack through 'em and the end result is on sale at £10+ for a 15k bag in any garden centre!
  7. Read what I said, calm yourself down, have a cup of tea. You don't add anything of value with your comment.
  8. One glaring omission from the advice above. Whosoever does the cutting, the arisings remain the property of the landowner on whose ground the tree grows, so it should be placed, so far as reasonable not to cause damage or further obstruction, back within the boundary of said landowner. In reality, with prior discussion / agreement of landowner, it would be reasonable to remove for the maintenance of goodwill (unless there is some value in the arisings - firewood, fruit, useful for turning etc)
  9. An interesting question! Maybe worth firing it off to the insurers for an answer. Wearing shorts shouldn't have any impact on PL insurance, it might have an implication for EL insurance and could have an implication for personal accident insurance, but, if you've done your risk assessment and the documented outcome is "wear shorts" you've covered your bases. Be interesting to get an insurers perspective. Might give them a ring to sound it out.
  10. No sympathy for the "cash buyer", it's these so called bargain hunters that are fuelling the market for theft. If there was no market to move it on to, there'd be less point in stealing in the first place.
  11. Good on you! Agreed, over reliance on "protective measures" can contribute to apathy, carelessness and poor technique - poor driving is a classic example - stereo, airbags, power steering, ABS etc gives idiot / incapable drivers a sense of invincibility rather than making their driving any better.
  12. Organise your life (and appliances) to maximise elec draw during generating hours and minimise during non generating hours. Dishwasher, washing machine etc etc set on timer, in sequence to switch on one after the other. Difficult to answer your direct question, haven't seen the kit but I wouldn't use it, we have PV, thermal and biomass so pretty well covered!
  13. Same at farm auctions! 2nd hand elec belle mini mix sold for more than a new one with 12months warranty! And then they had VAT & auctioneers commission on top! Macho bullshit or idiocy, either way, long live the fccwit!
  14. Seriously? Policy is (should be) valid the day it's written. If the risk of heat injuries is greater than the risk of injury from the activity, challenge the policy or moderate the activity. I have no problem at all, on excessively hot days, of either 1) not doing climbing tasks, 2) if the task has to be done, change the working pattern to ameliorate the effect of over heating, or 3) not wearing A or C trousers but exercise additional care and attention when cutting. Write it up in the risk assessment, job done, I've identified the risk and taken appropriate measures to control it. Awaiting the howls of outrage!
  15. It's been good reading from the touch line! Its only on the basis that if you've got nothing to add, add nothing, that I've been a "silent observer" but please don't take that as anything other than passive admiration for all contributions!
  16. It is expensive, but it is the best product so in the long term, your carving / garden furniture etc will be better protected and last longer - hopefully!
  17. Fell your tree for the firewood... You sure you don't want your car washed aswell?
  18. OSMO's the best but be prepared for the price!
  19. Gently lever off a couple (or more) letters from the keyboard and switch them around. If the user is a reasonably competent typist just switch by 1 position (Q for W for example) then sit back and enjoy the rage when the auto correct keeps popping up
