  1. A really good read! I doff my cap in respect!!
  2. Buy the appropriate root stock and graft onto it from cuttings from existing trees (assuming the existing trees are the heritage and quality you seek to enhance). Rootstock approx a pound each, cuttings - free!
  3. A lot of "supposedly" mobile boards in fields simply have wheels leaning on the board, you can see it up & down the motorway.
  4. Until you have consent / agreement from the tree owner, you'd be wasting your, and the tree surgeon's, time and effort. In these circumstances I would apply a charge for the quote (possibly redeemable on award of the contract.) If there is a tangible hazard from falling limbs causing damage or injury there is an obligation upon the tree owner to remove the hazard.
  5. Additional sign board explaining reason for delay was what I was planning but I thought if its only the front car that sees it, it won't be too long before someone behind them comes through. I guess there's only so much you can do. Branch in the road a good call!
  6. I haven't (yet) experienced it, but can easily see how it would happen! People are SO hell-bent on getting where they need (!) to go, my life must be missing something, don't think I've ever been in that much of a rush.
  7. Take the point, but, as you say, there's no requirement for signage PROVIDED the sight lines, speed limits, carriage way status and traffic density are within the parameters in the book. The LA not "allowing" use is a mute point I'd say, if you are within the parameters stated on P62, I don't see how they could deny you the use, especially as you wouldn't need to apply prior to using the board (within the parameters.)
  8. The other example prices make Cornwall look like good value for money! I won't tell our shop how much the rates are up country! Here's a question for the traffic boffins: P62 Red Book, a "stop -works" board is listed (looks like a school lollipop crossing sign) Nobody seems to stock them and many never even heard of it until they check Red book Subject to the listed restrictions (visibility distance, speed limits, traffic density etc) it can be used to stop traffic for 2 minutes to, for example, reverse a vehicle out of a site onto the carriageway. So, the question is, how would you feel about having your climber in the tree, put in the gob cut, arrange the rigging, signal the 1 of the groundies to stop traffic with the "stop works" board, put the fell cut in, lower the piece and clear the obstruction within 2 minutes and let the traffic through. OK, so I'm not talking A or even B roads, heavy traffic or other significant complicating factors, just a quiet-ish back lane. Any thoughts?
  9. Just seen, day time call out rate if broken is £39/hr day rate, £59.50 night rate and "outside fitter" for set up if required is £40.50 / hr
  10. Here's a list from our local hire shop: Signs - £4.50 / week each Cones - £1.50 / week each Lights - 2 way (incl 4 signs) £75/day,£105/2days, £135/3days, £150/week Lights - 3 way £115/day, £161/2 days, £207/3 days, £230/ week Hope that helps. That's X VAT and X delivery and set up which are extras if you need them.
  11. That's it! That's what I (rather poorly) meant to say! We're all DOOMED when "the procedure", blindly applied, takes precedence over observation, consideration, decision, revision and implementation! DOOMED I SAY!!!
  12. Not sure what it is you're trying to convey there, similarly though, I'm not sure my point was made very well as I was , rushing, eating, typing and thinking at the same time (maybe in a different order though) What I (think) I meant was... I wonder if the supervisor thought he/she was following the appropriate risk reduction by electing for a MEWP but in actual fact, made matters worse because the ground conditions were not suitable or the stability aids were inadequate. Only those involved will know. My point was, although perhaps poorly articulated, is there a risk that 'just because a procedure exists' people will follow it, probably in good faith, but actually the presence of the procedure has diminished the ability to look at the problem with clarity and apply the most appropriate solution?
  13. Name didn't come up on pic like I thought it would, unless there is a massive groundswell of opposition, I'm calling it 'Plums & Custard' Tricholomopsis rutilans
  14. Look out for these beauties this time next year... We had some crackers on our Llandii stumps
  15. Could it be possible that, being overly "risk averse" as most councils tend to be, they had elected to use the MEWP rather than SRT because HSE could be interpreted as requiring the MEWP to be used in preference to climbing. Perhaps the council did a risk assessment for climbing, identified the risk involved in climbing, mitigated that risk by using a MEWP. Wouldn't mitigate the responsibility to use the MEWP properly of course. Just a thought....
  16. Search the thread "Professional Tree Inspection in June with Guy Watson" and you'll see some details from folks that have recently attended a course. Might be useful.
  17. There is "an introduction to PTI" course that might help for those that are a bit daunted by going straight in for the main event or don't have sufficient practical experience.
  18. Are you ok for MEWP & 39? Could give you a hand if needed?
  19. EE too! Been several weeks poor signal, hopeless calls in Cornwall. Lost my rag today and phoned T Mobile. Their advice was reset carrier in settings. Word on the street here is that 3G signal is down so if your phone is on "auto network select" change it to "manual" and select 2G. It will louse up your Internet access but give you back your calls/txt. Hope that makes sense - I lost interest myself halfway through - best bet, call your provider and drain down on them!
  20. Like it! Of course the customer will 'press to test' your price, but it is a gamble that can leave them with egg on their face sometimes.
  21. Or perhaps, to put it another way... With your "20 yrs experience and never been asked" could it be you are a part of the problem? If those within the sector aren't willing to promote and demonstrate standards how can you expect the customer to think anything other than its labourers rates in a tree...
