  1. You go your way I'll go mine... The best customers I've worked for are the ones that DO expect professionalism and require proof thereof. The ones that are purely price focused, well I have the liberty of leaving those people for the "do it for the wood" brigade.
  2. Feel your pain! It's disheartening when potential customers show no interest in your qual's. I have mine in a folder with insurance cert. On arrival to scope a job I hand over the folder and say "have a flip through that while I look at the job" Then I emphasise that anyone else looking at the job should present a similar portfolio (and be proud to do so!) At least then if they decide to "go cheap" they know what the standard SHOULD have been. I also tend to go for the more challenging tasks, you know you'll be beaten on price by a muppet if it's a straight forward simple job. I think Traffic management is another area worth emphasising (where required), if you've got Signing / Lighting / Guarding ticket you're a step ahead of the shed dragger!
  3. A little of track but if you looking to save your hard earned here's an angle: if you buy a "commercial" vehicle (van, LR utility, SUV etc) the entire cost of the vehicle may be tax deductible if you do a self assessment tax return. So the bigger sum could be: Cost of vehicle + Cost of insurance (annually) - Tax rebate = True value Obviously, personal circumstances apply, but could be worth consideration.
  4. Good post, wise words. I suffered after a long day milling job on a piece of Oak. A packet of dust masks on the shopping list now. Although I don't relish the thought of summer work in a face mask, the potential risk (maybe in later life) is even less palatable. Appreciate the time, effort and research references previously posted. BZ
  5. Horse chestnut.... "Good load of logs" Not 2 phrases I'd normally put in the same sentence....
  6. Bash it! 2 years waiting a bored. Bought from the opposition!
  7. Like it! It's like a "slack line" but with back-up! Wife won't approve but I'll do it anyway!
  8. Fighting for the Journal @ 8 months old Read the manual and ready to start @ 12 months!
  9. TGB, sound words my friend (and many more than I could muster the energy to iterate!)
  10. Very well put! GM seed provision is all about securing the market NOT solving 3rd world nutrition deficit. It's time to acknowledge there are areas on the planet that simply cannot sustain human habitation. Pumping food aid into (predominantly) Sub Saharan Africa for the past 30 years has only served to prolong the inevitable.
  11. I can't see anyone "having a dig" at OP and I certainly didn't intend my post to be read that way. I started 2010 on my own and, purely from my own experience, wouldn't have it any other way. Get on my hansome, don't work for someone else, work for your self!
  12. All sounds good (and personally quite familiar - excluding spending all my weekends volunteering, although I am a volunteer tree warden) I don't consider karlk's comment as "rude", I was thinking pretty much the same! Get on, set yourself up, that's not rude, that would be the best course of action. You'll see plenty of posts/threads on here moaning about low wages in Arb in comparison to the tickets/quals/experience required to make a living, but be in no doubt, the jobs are charged out at a fair rate, it's the company bosses that are paying poorly for the skills of their staff. If you really do have the energy, determination & passion you allude to, get out there; set the world on fire!
  13. And, he may have some work for you. He was moaning about a local who kept pestering him to "do his trees," last time I saw him. I've been threatening to hike up there from Cornwall but in all probability it would end up being beer, hangover, no tree work!
  14. check the assessment schedule at nptc.org, it's all listed there. If it's on the schedule it should be included, if it ain't it shouldn't
