1. Avoid the botox! It'll give you fat lips and a fixed smile. Looks weird!
2. For Arborworx: Not sure what your location is? If you're in the wonderful SE, A303, Salisbury/Andover sort of area might pay to try Aid Training http://www.aid-training.co.uk/ Ex Royal Jan Hoskins runs the outfit, good old boy! They prob do regional training if there's a group. Bootneck & matelot instructors!
3. Here's a link to Cornwall council guidance on selecting an appropriate tree work contractor: Cornwall Council - Finding a reliable tree work contractor I'm not endorsing it unilaterally, just punting it up there as an example of what CC recommend. You'll get the hang of it after getting caught out once or twice and refine your style as you go along until you hit the sweet spot you're happy with. I'd recommend trying a logical thought process - walk through the job in your mind, start to finish, include the detail you are content to do and specifically detail that which is / is not included. Talk to the customer and make sure you both understand what is / is not included. There are some very canny people out there that will, if opportunity arises, try and include the "could you just" add-ons once you arrive on task. The whole private work at weekends thing: Only you know what your boss is like and how he / she might react. Personally, there's no way anyone is going to dictate what I do at the weekend (except the wife!)
4. HSE in contradiction shocker! "there is no legal requirement" followed by " we recommend they do" followed by "anyone working with chainsaws needs to be trained in emergency first aid" Personally I have level 2 and emergency trauma because it makes me feel better about my working environment.
5. Drum down (on a pallet) then stand in, then lift, that's what works for me!
6.

Hi Chis,

let me know when you're back on track and we'll have a look at what's on the cards. I've got a Saltash job next week and a St Cleer job awaiting TPO confirmation so there's a bit to do if you fancy some.

7. I'm absolutely right old chap, read what I said: a structure greater than 300mm above ground level will require bldg control. The tree house (in this case) may, or may not require planning consent. Simples....
8. Couldn't say if you're right or wrong fella.... Didn't really follow it!
9. Just got a library card (Cornwall council) There is online access to the British Standards library with access to ALL standards! Licensing requirements mean you can use for 'research' only and that saving / copying / printing is blocked (but there are ways around that!) Really useful!
10. I'm with you! I wasn't suggesting I could explain it better, I'm as confused as the next man! I try my best iaw what I think the correct principles are but its only my best guess based upon what I think is right
11. I'm looking at a 2nd hand (1 careful owner from new) Lucas mill, bit of a punt but I've seen it and used it so know its straight & true cut. Could be some busy times ahead and a big step up from the Alaskan!
12. Maplins! All day long.... Look online!
13. If it looks wrong, it probably is wrong... A fair mandate for life and certainly for VoSA it would seem. If it ain't road worthy, it deserves to be pulled and taken off the road - no grumbles from me! The whole 'nose weight' thing for trailers could be more simply explained / presented though! Maybe that would help people to get it right.
14. Thanks for the vid and for the supplementary comments, I'll put those into practice at the next opportunity also! As a fan of the file, I haven't ventured the grinder yet. Is it an 'urban myth' that the grinder causes a reduction in the tensile strength of the cutting edge of the chain? Sounds like there are some strong advocates of the grinder... Is there a particular product you favour and who's supplying it?
15. SE (Southampton) not my neck-o-the-woods so difficult to offer any useful advice relevant to that area. I spent a short time in Farnborough, the drive into town from where I was staying revealed what I thought was a lot of vans & trucks from arb companies so there must be the work. Might be worth having a look at the 'Employment' forum and see what's posted for your area.
16. What height would you say it is? 7-8ft judging by the height of the fence.... A roe deer on back legs = 8ft+..... Historic meaning from some time ago judging by the wound wood. Giraffe, no not really.... Deer, possible, who knows for sure.... Sarcasm, eat me!
17. Barbed wire and stock net nailed to the tree, looks like historic deer browsing damage, at least it's been well cared for through it's short life....
18. Good for you! Where are you based or planning to be based? Some areas are more or less heavily served by existing practitioners and the inherent challenges and opportunities vary according to the area of operation.
