  1. The insurance industry would beg to differ. £64 million in claims last year! https://www.edwincoe.com/blogs/main/happy-surge-year-rise-subsidence-claims-201819/
  2. When men were men and H&S wasn't much of an issue...
  3. Annoying I know, but be thankful that damage is limited only to the blades.
  4. I'm not disagreeing, but then again here's lots of issues with birds either getting trapped inside the netting when it's installed or flying into it after installation. It seems a bit of a lose/lose situation either way. Seems like agricultural exemptions are even more wide ranging than arboricultural ones
  5. The OP asked a question about improving the trees health.
  6. Five years of chemical application I really do wonder what the result would have been if you'd just cut new growth down every time it emerged for the same period of time. I just assume that any plant that isn't allowed to photosynthesis must eventually exhaust itself and run out of energy?
  7. Following on from the above. The retrenchment of the crown does suggest that the root system is compromised. To begin to attempt to remediate the ground compaction (assuming that that is the issue) the trough needs resiting away from the tree. Livestock will still congregate beneath, seeking shade in warm weather, so fencing, even a dead hedge of branches etc, aeay from the dripline would prevent this. A mulch of well rotted woodchip beneath the crown will start to relieve the compaction and improve the soil structure and organic content. In an ideal world you'd also move the gateway, so vehicles weren't driving over the root system. If that isn't possible, at least avoid using the gateway when the soils wet and most susceptible to damage.
  8. The local kids turned up with this little girl, which they'd found dumped in the woods as a kitten. They named her Sonika but also call her sonic. She terrorises all the male cats and the rotties when inclined, so she's also known as Taz or the She Devil.
  9. Just a couple of our cat family. Pikachu a part Bengal found in a drier at a launderette as a kitten and Monty doing his otter impression and waiting for a belly rub.
  10. No way that they can exactly reproduce the roof timbers, the timber simply isn't there. http://fortune.com/2019/04/16/notre-dame-after-fire-rebuild/
  11. Probably not, but at least she probably wouldn't advocate throwing them off rooftops or stoning them to death.
  12. Have you ever been to Milton Keynes?
  13. I'd imagine that as her job involves spiritual guidance she'd be explaining that it goes against the teaching of the church.
  14. well you knew it was going to happen, someone was going to make issue that the teaching was against their religious belief's. Reading the article, I just wonder exactly how many pupils this primary school has that fit into the categories the disciplinary panel are so concerned about? "disciplinary panel there decided that she had used language which demeaned its gay, lesbian and transgender pupils."
  15. You're just highlighting the problems with 'area' TPOs Mark. On development sites TPOs aren't necessarily the best method of tree protection during the development phase, planning conditions can be sufficient. A Secretary of State said years back that area TPO's should only be used a temporary means of tree protection, made when expedient and until such time as the trees can be properly assessed for (tree) specific protection. Unfortunately, once protection is in place the authorities just leave it at that and don't progress forward as the legislation intended.
  16. Without doubt Poole have a long history of successful prosecutions going back over a several years. Kirklees (Huddersfield) used to be similar. One particular TO always appeared in the reporting of cases, so it appeared that she was providing the impetus to prosecute. I think that the crux of the matter is in the wording of the legislation. From memory the wording goes something 'did' and allow or allowed. Something like that. So if the owner didn't 'do/instruct' the action and can show that they'd acted as they should have done and it still occurred etc it becomes less of an open and shut case.
  17. I don't think that burning is particularly effective, as it originates from volcanic regions. Anecdotally a friend dug some of the roots up, threw them on his huge Nov 5th fire, only to discover new stems appearing at his fire site the following year, despite there never having previously been any JK in that part of the garden previously.
  18. They're trying to get into the UK to take our jobs and houses. We'll be safe after we leave the EU.
  19. Careful! "A bat roost is protected whether or not it is in use at the time" according to Felix (I haven't looked at the wording of the legislation myself. I'm interpreting that as, if a box has ever been occupied, even for one day, then it's legally designated as a bat roost and then you'd be disturbing it and committing an offence.. Whereas a birds nest has to either be under construction or in use, before disturbing becomes an offence.
  20. I read something years ago saying that much of the timber from these had so many shakes from felling that it ended up as shingles. I remember a photo of a trench filled with branches that they'd felled a tree into, in an attempt to prevent shakes - extraordinary lengths to achieve usable timber!
  21. That makes a change, a solicitor having his trousers down
