  1. Without doubt Poole have a long history of successful prosecutions going back over a several years. Kirklees (Huddersfield) used to be similar. One particular TO always appeared in the reporting of cases, so it appeared that she was providing the impetus to prosecute. I think that the crux of the matter is in the wording of the legislation. From memory the wording goes something 'did' and allow or allowed. Something like that. So if the owner didn't 'do/instruct' the action and can show that they'd acted as they should have done and it still occurred etc it becomes less of an open and shut case.
  2. I don't think that burning is particularly effective, as it originates from volcanic regions. Anecdotally a friend dug some of the roots up, threw them on his huge Nov 5th fire, only to discover new stems appearing at his fire site the following year, despite there never having previously been any JK in that part of the garden previously.
  3. They're trying to get into the UK to take our jobs and houses. We'll be safe after we leave the EU.
  4. Careful! "A bat roost is protected whether or not it is in use at the time" according to Felix (I haven't looked at the wording of the legislation myself. I'm interpreting that as, if a box has ever been occupied, even for one day, then it's legally designated as a bat roost and then you'd be disturbing it and committing an offence.. Whereas a birds nest has to either be under construction or in use, before disturbing becomes an offence.
  5. I read something years ago saying that much of the timber from these had so many shakes from felling that it ended up as shingles. I remember a photo of a trench filled with branches that they'd felled a tree into, in an attempt to prevent shakes - extraordinary lengths to achieve usable timber!
  6. That makes a change, a solicitor having his trousers down
  7. If he has it's probably gone now!
  8. Thanks Felix.
  9. Debris builds up over time between the sides of the rollers, so regular cleaning is a preventative measure.
  10. If a box is occupied on the day of work I'm assuming that the work can't be done, because of the risk of disturbance. Could you check prior to the works and temporarily remove the boxes? (replacing after completion of works)
  11. Someone has to be the main contractor and responsible for ensuring that everyone they use are ponying up their tax. The whole CIS is designed to ensure that what's owed is payed. I think that the CI scheme came about because too many people in construction were evading tax, so it became a case of the main contractor becoming responsible for collected it at source.
  12. How does that work then? Who is with-holding and passing on the CIS element to the taxman?
  13. I wouldn't worry what everyone else is using but as all Vat returns are going to be directly online, or already are, I'd look at the VAT website to see what is compatible. Program on R4 last week about it. As I understand it all the figures for costs and profit/income are entered on the Vat website, straight from your own software. Lots of hullabaloo from small businesses who have old software that isn't compatible or where there isn't add -on bridging software available. It's been on the cards for 2-3 years but it's imminent now. Good luck
  14. It's bad everywhere when you start talking to people. I'm also sorry to hear this - I've only just come across the thread.
  15. "Wilson is thought to be the first person prosecuted under the Proceeds of Crime Act over damaging a tree to improve light" I don't understand this comment. Is he the first to done for 'pruning/damaging' under the PoC? _ Rather than destroying/felling?
  16. Not so sure about newer lines, but it used to be that there's only a couple of wires that actually connect within the house junction box. These sometimes connect with a little gel filled crimp type connector (which are also dead handy to mend a broken line temporarily). Or so I'm told
  17. But be quick, they get a bit peeved if they catch you
  18. Sorry that I've no answers.
  19. Very little that you can do when they're situated in hard surfaces apart from supplementary watering and even then unless there is existing an underground watering system in place it's difficult to get water to where it's needed. Anti-transpiration chemicals are only really practical on very small trees/new plantings and shrubs. Last summer I did note that in both established trees and new plantings Birch seemed to be particularly susceptible to drought stress. On the plus side they will naturally shed leaves to reduce transpiration and then produce lammas growth later in the summer when conditions are more favourable.
  20. Clearing out a sawmill/timber yard in the late eighties/early nineties, most of the beech timber seemed to be going for pip props. If it wasn't of good quality, then it would go to firewood... How times change.
  21. Thanks for that OSL, that's the one I've been looking for.
  22. Maybe they can salvage enough good timber for a couple of longboat, just to sink the unwelcome weekend crews?
  23. And how did you're answer go down then?
