  1. Debris builds up over time between the sides of the rollers, so regular cleaning is a preventative measure.
  2. If a box is occupied on the day of work I'm assuming that the work can't be done, because of the risk of disturbance. Could you check prior to the works and temporarily remove the boxes? (replacing after completion of works)
  3. Someone has to be the main contractor and responsible for ensuring that everyone they use are ponying up their tax. The whole CIS is designed to ensure that what's owed is payed. I think that the CI scheme came about because too many people in construction were evading tax, so it became a case of the main contractor becoming responsible for collected it at source.
  4. How does that work then? Who is with-holding and passing on the CIS element to the taxman?
  5. I wouldn't worry what everyone else is using but as all Vat returns are going to be directly online, or already are, I'd look at the VAT website to see what is compatible. Program on R4 last week about it. As I understand it all the figures for costs and profit/income are entered on the Vat website, straight from your own software. Lots of hullabaloo from small businesses who have old software that isn't compatible or where there isn't add -on bridging software available. It's been on the cards for 2-3 years but it's imminent now. Good luck
  6. It's bad everywhere when you start talking to people. I'm also sorry to hear this - I've only just come across the thread.
  7. "Wilson is thought to be the first person prosecuted under the Proceeds of Crime Act over damaging a tree to improve light" I don't understand this comment. Is he the first to done for 'pruning/damaging' under the PoC? _ Rather than destroying/felling?
  8. Not so sure about newer lines, but it used to be that there's only a couple of wires that actually connect within the house junction box. These sometimes connect with a little gel filled crimp type connector (which are also dead handy to mend a broken line temporarily). Or so I'm told
  9. But be quick, they get a bit peeved if they catch you
  10. Very little that you can do when they're situated in hard surfaces apart from supplementary watering and even then unless there is existing an underground watering system in place it's difficult to get water to where it's needed. Anti-transpiration chemicals are only really practical on very small trees/new plantings and shrubs. Last summer I did note that in both established trees and new plantings Birch seemed to be particularly susceptible to drought stress. On the plus side they will naturally shed leaves to reduce transpiration and then produce lammas growth later in the summer when conditions are more favourable.
  11. I find that surprising as I'd expect self seeders to be more likely to have retain tap roots than transplanted trees.
  12. Clearing out a sawmill/timber yard in the late eighties/early nineties, most of the beech timber seemed to be going for pip props. If it wasn't of good quality, then it would go to firewood... How times change.
  13. Thanks for that OSL, that's the one I've been looking for.
  14. Maybe they can salvage enough good timber for a couple of longboat, just to sink the unwelcome weekend crews?
  15. And how did you're answer go down then?
  16. Jeez.. Thought this was going to be a repition of Matelots post
  17. He could have bought it back cleaned and sharpened. Then he'd really be a great bloke.
  18. Don't be coming into a proper tree thread and starting your name-calling and trolling antics
  19. I can't believe how much elm just went for firewood twenty years ago. No one wanted it. When I worked for the LA I felled a stem that was burred to around 4m. I arranged with my manager to plank it at cost for a local wood turning club, but there was insufficient interest to do it.
  20. Stop felling stuff. There's no more work for anyone once they're gone Mark
  21. Using woodchip, the sugars released by the breakdown of the chip itself will encourage the right type of fungi for tree itself, rather than throwing some 'works for everything' spores that are often not even viable anyway. Sorry not of fan of mycorrizal inoculations, I don't believe we understand the relationships involved enough to be able to produce anything that isn't largely snake oil as yet.
