  1. We've just bought a house and 8 acres. The business has a yard in town, it casts us 6k a year- no power, no sheds but it's central to where we work, hard standing, enough for the gear, chip and a couple of 100 cube of split wood. To me the there are pros and cons, but what benefits have people found of having their yard where they live? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. I cut my abdomen open 10 weeks ago with a circular saw- currently on ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine to try and ease the pain- will be on then for a long time I would say! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. 4 years ago I borrowed 14k and bought a 97 hi lux. Begged and borrowed saws but had descent climbing gear. Worked hard but now I have 2 trucks, a new bandit 9" a Vermeer 625, a stump grinder and a processor. Just goes to show what hard work can achieve in a short period of time. 7. All I can say is a big thank you, there was no need for you to make it your concern. By the sounds of it you are a good dealer who has faith in his product. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Have to agree with this post. Looked at a similar job yesterday, 12 Birches- light issues. Customer wanted to reduce them by 40%!! Talked them into thinning and a slight crown life to allow more light through the tree. Just because it's what the customer wants doesn't mean it's the best for them or the tree. You can advise them and if they still want to go ahead with the reduction, do it. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. Thank you for calling me stupid, unfair and unintelligent Here are my reasons why (from a previous thread) Hi Ian. Maybe I'm been a bit harsh, i am very disappointed with it though. It was a new 95 bought 6 months ago. It seems to get jammed easy with timber, no auto feed, no hour clock, no rev counter, when I first got it the murphy switch kept on engaging turning the machine off. Bits of chip gets caught between the feed roller housing and push into the flywheel bearing. The first two days I had it, it was in the engineers. I was looking at a 990, was wanting a drum chipper but just couldn't afford one. Like I said maybe I'm been a bit critical, but what I expected and what I got was very different. 11. All I hear is possibly and might. We use machinery to move timber, so work smarter not harder folks. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. No, although I've been in the industry for over 10 years it still doesn't make me a girl. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  17. Never thought I would say this.... But I have to agree with huck here. It's a pain when we can't get the 9" near a job and have to use the 6. Anything small is a waste of time. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Any pics of the layout inside?? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. We usually run it for 3 months over winter, say 12 weeks a year. My wife works at the hospital so likes it warm. When I've been working outside in the cold all day it's roasting when I get home! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. Ours is going to be lit every night now till Sept. Nice during the day- cold crisp mornings, blue sky, down to a t-shirt by around 11am. Gets bloody cold on a evening, always nice to have the fire lit. Good reminder of how lucky we are not to have to buy firewood. Getting more expensive every year! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. I worked there for about 6 months ( bout 3 years ago) Because work is such a massive part of my life and the way the business is run I actually suffered from depression from working there. The boys are a good crack though. I doubt they will be any guys there from when I was there... Big staff turnover Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Dude... You ask for people's opinions and when given you reject them? Why ask? If you think you can modify a harness to a better spec than Petzl - a multi million pound international company... Go for it! If it were me (and I've climbed on one for years) I would leave it be. It's a good harness, your not going to make it better or safer, quite the opposite. You want to replace alloy and webbing with steel? Are you going to climb on steel carabiners and steel rope? This whole topic is moo... Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. We recently took down a large ish Monkey Puzzle. The butt log is about 5-6m long and 1-1.5m across, (not the one in the pic) Anyone know if it's any good for milling or is it just firewood? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. I have a Toyota, the heater is crap, lights keep falling out, doesn't start and the doors held on with a strap till I get round to fixing it. Should have bought another landy...
  25. You cannot operate a business efficiently without some sort of finance along the way. It is a risk getting finance but that's the joys of running business. I would buy new if you can afford it, my first chipper I bought here in NZ was second hand. (couldn't afford new at the time) It was costing more on repairs and maintenance a month than the repayments on a new one. But at the time the bank wouldn't lend the money. Now we have a new machine and never look back.
