  1. IMO for what's its worth there are only two ways of doing firewood and make it pay. 1) Get your wood for free, minimal gear, do it for a bit extra- low overheads. 2) Buy your wood in... Have the gear, turnover a large volume of timber. We've just split 300 cube, with the same again to do when we get chance. Not sure how much we're going to sell this year but aiming for 4000 cube.
  2. Truch went in to the mechanics last week only to find out the engine needs a re-build. New pistons (old ones cracked) rings, injectors, plugs, head gasket, head re-skimmed. $6000 + GST gone. Plus having a week without it.

  5. I've just bought a new 9" bandit. Very disapointed with it, wist I had bought a BC1000 XL
  6. I know this forum is mainly for the UK but it can't hurt..... Due to an increse in work we are looking for a climber/ groundy for day to day tree work. Must be qualified and experiance preferred.
  7. Thats always the case! Too busy rushing around and not consentrating on what I'm doing. Stuffed up an a macro removal on once, priced it for a day, ended up taking two. The customer offered to pay the differance but to me a quote is a quote. You win some you loose some.
  8. Good answer.... Pretty much sums it up!
  9. Cheers fella, the sequoia take down was in Dunedin. Shame it came down, nothing wrong with it. Made the front page in the OTD though.
  10. Couldn't agree more, I'm going to buy my next pair from the uk and get them shipped over. Sick of replacing cheap ones every 6 months. I wear them 6 days a week, can't be arsed wearing rubbish! IMO I have worked with some good kiwi climbers and good British ones. As well as some really..... Really crap ones. I think Brits are better all round tree workers tho..... Cos they have to be!
  11. A collection of what we do, most of the jobs were from last year. YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
  12. I've cleaned up after the one TreeTech have... worse job ever! There a licence to print money those things!
  13. I dont think there is any need to be lighting fires in peoples back gardens now. Just chip it up. Also i know we're not insured for fires we light so I dont do it. I have left stuff for other people to burn though.
  14. Same here.... Definitely worth it.
  15. I wouldn't say aiming to get every job I look at is pointless and naive. I would work for a little less yet earn money than sit at home wondering how I'm going to pay the bills. Also because of the gear we have we can get jobs done quickly. We MAY be a bit cheaper than the other guy but becaues we can get the job done faster we can do more jobs. For example- we have a 9" instead of a 6". More jobs= more turnover= more profit.
  16. I totally agree with you, trees don't need our "help", I too cut trees to help my clients. 99% of the time it's the client who has the problem with the tree. That's why I always keep damage to a minimum as do you. I guess it's a question of how much of a business man you are, how much you need the work. I have taken out trees for no reason apart from the customer "doesn't like the mess". However I have also tried to save the tree, thats my set of morals. I'm not saying it's right and I think no one has the right to say I'm wrong to do so.
  17. Mark Bolam...... I like the way you think!!!
  18. We had the same problem. Very frustrating chasing your tail all the time! When ever we get a enquiry i take there details on a pad, name, addresse, phone number, email..... I arrange a time to see the job. When I look at the job, I write out a quote on triple carbon copies. Top one (with t&c on the back for them) two for us (one job sheet, one for the office). They get put in a file. When they accept the job they get moved into another file, newest to the back. On a Sunday night I ring up and arrange the weeks work, take the pink job for the lads. When we do the job the details get put on the invoice system and a printed invoice if written and posted out. I inns this to be the best and most efficiant way of handling large volumes of work. Also my wife has a copy of the quote so she can type out a invoice as soon as the works done. Also the customers details are stored on the invoice system.
  19. I've actually put a TPO on trees I've been asked to take down. I have a business, loans to pay off, a family to support, mortgage and wages to pay.... So on and so on, but at the end of the day I LIKE TREES! That's why I do the job.
  20. What's wrong with aiming to get 100% of the work you look at? I know it's never going to happen but you have to try. I wouldn't be happy if I only got 70% of the jobs I looked at. Far from it, it would mean I'm wasting 30% of my time on the jobs I look at. If there going to get a pro to do the job, I would rather it be me!
  21. I've never done that but been up the tree twice and watched it happen...... Very funny thing to see!!!!
  22. I bought my first chipper in the UK for £1000. A Vermeer 625i, great wee machine. That was 8 years ago, had it shipped over to NZ. Just spent $900 on it (£450) on getting the engine reconditioned and that's about all I've spent on it. It paid for it's self on the first job I did with it. Still use it now! You can get a good machine cheap, you just need to be lucky and know what to look for.
  23. I'm burning poplar as I type this. If dry anything burns. I had about 30t to shift this year. Sold it no worries. I know things are a bit different in the UK but if it's free surly someone will take it? Even if you process it on site, leave it to dry and sell it cheap in winter. Better than nothing.
