  1. Cheers Jon... just hope it's reliable, got a year's warranty to shake it down though! I was looking at tyres yesterday Matt, the ones that are on there are £210 each + VAT.... so I don't think I'll be having those again.....! Was trying to get the new General AT's but not sure if they come in a 20" yet, they do as a 19".... will have a look for the Wranglers.... Sadly [?! I'm not that devastated mind you!] it's a TD6.... I had a couple of 2008 ish TDV8's lined up to look at which is what I really wanted, but they're all £475 a year road tax, plus any at main dealers were out of my price range... this TD6 came up at Stratstone LR, so if they'd decided it was good enough to retail and were willing to put a years warranty on it then I had to have a punt. It's £270 a year tax too being just before the March 06 increase... I made up for the missing TDV8 with a Vogue SE instead, so everything on it, and it will shortly be JE re-mapped which will add another 45 ish brake and nearly 100nm of torque, kind of halfway to a TDV8.....
  2. Blimey.... I can see me ending up tied in knots and dangling in mid air with no hope of escape if I tried that....! Presumably at some point in this process the line you're hanging on will become crossed over with the line you're descending on...? Or are they the same line, so if you do lose your footing and don't have a strop on as well [which presumably you couldn't or that would get tangled up too] you'll tumble by however much slack you've pulled out to step through....? When I wanted to shoot down for a sandwich... [or a pee, more frequently] I found a branch [easy in a tree], oiked myself up a bit to put some slack in my line, pulled the 8 into the slack then clip onto the bridge with a crab.... very quick, certainly quicker than climbing through massive bights.... To be honest though, since swapping to a VT though I haven't bothered with the 8.....
  3. Another one for the fleet... I'd ordered a new 525d as a company car, but the boss asked if I'd prefer to opt out and take an allowance instead..... So I opted out and did what I've been trying to do for the last 18 months.... This time I got it past the wife... just...
  4. Likewise, I can't see how to change over from hitch to 8 without either taking it off the bridge or threading the line through from the loose end.... going to be 90 degrees out as well....
  5. I've always wanted a Kamaz, it's the ultimate apocalypse truck.... they're freakin awesome.....
  6. Jon, all cars break down sometimes mate, I've seen Priuses [Prii???] Navaras, Civics, 7 series, A4's, ML's all sorts or everything on the back of tow trucks at some point.... even Land Cruisers! But I wouldn't say they're all rubbish because of that....! Ref the D3 question, great truck, but to put it into perspective I just bought a Range Rover instead as I reckon they're more reliable... If you can I'd save a few more pennies and go for a D4 [i couldn't], while the 3 is good there are bad ones out there, the D4 seems to have shaken that problem and in my experience is a fantastic vehicle. My boss has a 59 plate 3.0 GS auto he bought new, racked up a few miles now and never missed a beat. His previous 55 plate D3 HSE V8 did give quite a few problems.... Find a D4 mate...
  7. I don't often find myself agreeing with you Tony but I think you're absolutely right.
  8. Have you taken as much friction as you can out of the system? The other thing you can do, if you're climbing on a self tending prusik, is add a croll and foot loop [you could use a Pantin but on a self tending system a Croll works fine, it's what I started off on]. That way rather than straining with all your might to pull down, you just stand up to advance the hitch, then sit down and pull the Croll up and the system does everything else...
  9. What years were the A55's made? A friend of mine was a Holder dealer back in the 80's, he may have some info... I'll drop him an email....
  10. Am I right in saying that this lever is scalloped so the rope runs through it? So you can't run the grub screw all the way through? Would a sensible mod for this not be to remove the grub screw, use a small drill bit and ream a shallow detente into the lever that the grub screw can nestle into, then reassemble with some thread lock? If I were rash enough to buy one of these I think that would be the first thing I'd do....
  11. Common fault, although the intermittent-ness of this suggests it could be some other gremlin... See here for ECU loom replacement info... [albeit for Disco but same principal] www.discovery2.co.uk / Workshop /Injector Harness Immobiliser could be an issue... if it plays up try taking the key out, open & close the door, lock it with the button, unlock, open / close the door again and then try to start it. The half hour thing may just be coincidence.... Is your battery up to spec? Get it tested at the local garage.... that might not be helping. Also as suggested, tapping relays under the seat might help! Next thing is join a Land Rover forum and try to find someone near you with a Nanocom or Hawkeye diagnostic computer they'll plug in for you....
  12. Welcome, credit where credit's due and all that! What's a real shame is that I didn't know about this a couple of months ago, it was my 'wood' wedding anniversary [i was informed!] and my wife would have loved one of these! I may still treat her to one for her birthday later in the year yet, I'll email you a sketch of what I'd like, I'd like to wall mount it...
  13. That is lovely! So am I right in saying it was getting on for £70? I'd pay that... and I'm notoriously tight!
  14. I once cut a ginger bloke in half..... he claimed to be a brunette.... we found he was telling fibs.... he was actually an Alder....
  15. creases then!
  16. Bad news Justin, sorry to hear that. I guess you have records of serial numbers etc?
  17. Can you imagine closing Birmingham for Matthew Wilson...? Wouldn't be quite the same! Ken Block is an incredible driver, very precise and a real showman, don't think that translates onto much of the WRC but I love watching these films, he's a big kid and a massive show off, fair play to him, he's living the dream!
  18. Fair point! Incidentally, what bog roll would you recommend, personally I don't like it too thick, can't get in all the cracks....
  19. Yep, Alder
  20. I'd agree with this, make sure you try out a few harnesses and give a bit of thought about not just what you're climbing now but where you think you'll be in a few months. There's probably only £100 between the top end harness and entry level, but £100 on top of £150 is less than £250 on top of £150 in a couple of months..! I doubt it will be long before you're moving on from a prusik either so rather than buying a kit based round a prusik, you might be better off building a kit intended for VT etc. and adding in a couple of quid's worth of hitch cord, tying your own loop and starting on that rather than the two loops in that kit. They're an expensive way of getting prusik loops IMO.... I guess you want a rope, harness, cambium saver, various lengths of hitch cord, half a dozen carabiners, couple of small pulleys, lanyard kit, throw line.
  21. I've not had that problem on mine, I've found it to be quite a nice rope. I don't think it's very easy to splice though....
  22. It's fine so long as the harness is comfy and you want to climb on a prusik... have you tried the harness? Wouldn't be my first choice I don't think...
  23. I have a great imagination, but I prefer to put it to use swashbuckling stuff or mooching round the middle east..... I find reading sex scenes just a bit weird.... I do the nasty stuff with the wife, and we have 3 kids already, so the last thing we need in this house is any more stimulation, god help us....
  24. Distel gets good feedback, as does a knut. I use a 2/1 VT on a very short cord. What rope & friction cord do you have?
  25. We drilled a hole in the top filler plug on our Dexta and welded an elbow and 3/4 bsp thread on to it.... I would imagine you'll be able to get away with something similar on this, I don't think they're over complicated inside...
