  1. good for you, enjoy the outdoor lifestyle from now on, and the best "office" anywhere
  2. when anyone asks me what I burn, my standard reply is, " I burn special stuff, its called tree wood"..... if its dry, it goes in the stove, and the sawdust from the mill goes into empty fruit juice cartons, gets mixed with waste vegie oil, (courtesy of the local kebab shop), and these get burned as well. heats the house and workshop all winter to toasty
  3. it is excellent for carving, nearly all the woodprint blocks were made out of it as it keeps a very sharp edge on fine work, turns into lovely clean defined edges, beautifull timber to work with
  4. anything indoors, table tops, cabinetry, etc, can use it outdoors, but needs to be well protected
  5. its not what the vehicle is capable of carrying, its what taxation class they want it to fit into, the 3500kg is a throw back to the stone age and the old taxation classes, same with the 7500kg crap, and the max towable on over run brakes 3500kg, all based on old tech, whole system needs revising and bringing up to date, load carrying based on actuall capabilities, same with towing weights(not dreamed up to corner a market)
  6. nice truck, but a licence looser for someone
  7. sorry J, never crossed my mind, being lime theres not much of a grain to see, two seperate sections from a very big windblow, the bottom of the trunk has been stacked to be done in the new year, its right on the weight limit for my hiab
  8. stick to 2 1/2 times your max pull and youll not go far wrong, bigger is always better
  9. some nice lime milled on the M7 today

    elm

a photo of it loaded on the trailer
  11. have a look on some of the american milling forums, there is a lot of good ideas on home built versions, it might be your best option
  12. a lot of folk on here spouting off about things they clearly have no knowledge about.....agricultural machines, and how the laws apply.. tractors are limited to 20mph, any faster...breaks the law, tractors are limited to widths2.55m, same with trailed implements, there are age restrictions on the size you can drive, so 17 year olds cant drive the largest tractors, if its used on the road, although it doesnt require an MOT, it MUST be road legal mechaniclly, any tractor legally travelling over 20mph MUST have suspension on all wheels, as well as brakes(currently only 2 manufacturers, mercedes, and jcb), and must have mechanically connected steering(rules out the larger jcb fastracks). there are limits on axle spacings, limits on weights, lighting conditions and pages of rules. just remember, force the farmers off the road, and every bit of food you buy Will go up in price
  13. they dont get cash, the window gives out a cheque, they then walk to the next window, where the cheque is cashed for them, poor souls not having a bank account
  14. it is an interesting problem, a local council cannot own property, only hold it in trust for the community, (law, even if they would have you believe different), so is your local authority hiding under a corporate body (council name ltd) this is how they get away with lots of scams, no one knows the company exsists, and they play on this, if the site falls under a planning scheme....no felling licence.......planning trumps forrestry, like they do everything

    elm

lovely big elm felled today, destined for boarding out, table tops and memorial benches, forgot to get piccies, but will get them tommorow when I take the mog in to hiab the buts out
  16. let them sit for a day, sharpen and set, let sit again before you use them, and how many folk use different sets and angles for different timbers ?
  17. never admit anything at the roadside, never produce any documentation, never sign anything. they have to prove an offence has been comitted, you dont have to prove your innocence, so why help them, furthermore you do not have to provide any personall information unless you are detained or charged.......mr piggy isNOT a policeman any more, he/she is a police officer and works for a profit making corporate orginisation, the days of them being public sevants and being there to help you have long gone
  18. unless wood is kept in a "dry" atmosphere, it will match the relitive humidity around it, remember it is a natural material, it will give up moisture to a drier enviroment, likewise it will take up moisture from a wetter one, forget moisture meters, if it rings when struck, it'll burn fine
  19. they are called toe boards by woodmizer
  20. not all engines have oil jets fitted, they all have the option, but not all get fitted, and they spray onto the underside of the pistons as a cooling jet
  21. for some strange reason, a chain will blunt a lot quicker in soft woods than it does in hardwoods, something to do with the way the longer fibres tear, rather than shear during the cutting action. I found that an angle of between 5 and 7 degrees seems to last a bit longer on soft coniferous species, and down to almost 0 degrees on sitka gives a ready to use finish off the saw
  22. the uk goverment were pulled up by europe some time back about charging vat on a tax, ie vat on fuel duty, which is technically ilegall, but they just ignored it and carried on, typical of the theiving scum
  23. 10k gross weight on a U1600 Chris, so rather a lot of chip !
  24. nice one skyhuck ,my error the 1500 is the large chassis, the first in the 425-xxx designations, the 1600 is the two piece axle weirdo in the small chassis, larger capacity(10 k as oppossed to 7.5k on the 424-xxx models) just that U1500 and U1600 mogs dont pop up to frequently, usual jump from U1200 to U1700 (most U1300's that appear are ex military, and thats a whole different can of worms) I becomes a whole lot simpler to use mercedes numbering system, i.e. 424, 425, and 427, you need to know these anyway to get your spare bits, log into the EPC punch in your chassis number, get your build spec, find the bit you need(early models log in try chassis no, get told it doesnt exsist, start paging through to find what you need...lol)
  25. every mog built is to a specific order, why order a euro 5 engine for a country where a euro 2 will suffice, mogs are sized by engine hp and chassis size, U1000, 1200, 1500 are the smaller chassis, U1300, 1600,1700, and 2100 are the large chassis, the U1000 is the only non turbo version, there are long chassis, and specials throughout the range, likewise transmission options, there is no such thing as a standard unimog, every machine comes with a data card specing its build, this is selected from a book currently running at over 150 pages. as for tuning, the only folk to speak to are Helgeth in germany, they build unimogs to race, not saying AC price dont know what there doing, they are unimog specialists, but do they win races with what they build, and the OM352 and OM366 engines are fitted in an awfull lot of other mercedes vehicles putting out some serious HP, (especially in some of the marine applications) and as for a U1600 with a euro 5, never built in a mercedes factory, anything newer than euro 3... was a U3000 or bigger, or U300 or bigger, do your research on the history of the beasts, I've worked with them for over 30 years now and still come across oddities that werent on the std options and built to special orderd, agri versions being the worst
