  1. I liked the ice-cream and rolling down the hill...
  2. This chap here perhaps? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=41825
  3. There was a chap on here not that long ago, had all his kit stolen overnight. (think this sad report was his first post on AT) then he got sorted by the insurers and listed his shopping trolly amongst which was a 241. I'll try and find who it was. Someone must have bought it!?!
  4. I've got three 8hp ones, that'll get you 24, is that close enough?
  5. Anyone going to it? I think I may take my daughters there this Sunday, if the weather looks to be cooperative.
  6. Well done Justin et al, them rabbits better be careful now!
  7. Oh, sorry:blushing: I'll rephrase: "somewhere in the soft south":001_tt2:
  8. Beauty isn't it! It's just of the A272. I was on a course on the estate last weekend and they've got some real crackers.
  9. Not quite a face, and quite a crap picture....
  10. This one is on the Cowdray estate in east Sussex, near midhurst. It's over 9ft diameter. And for scale:
  11. I agree. The other thing to remember is how people remember you. Two years down the line a previous customer may well have forgotten your awkward spelling, which means they may not be able to find you. The same goes for people seeing your van etc, they'd have to remember your spelling to find you, which would be easy if it was very simple and witty. If you wrote "Jaxon" but made the x out of two axes you have a chance of lodging in people's memory I reckon.
  12. Seems like a good development. Just curious, how much of a discount can a customer of such size negotiate? Don't really need accurate numbers, just wondered if it was like near 20% or 5%or whatever?
  13. My best customer has quite a few (very expensive) cars, owns more acres than you'd care to walk around in a day, runs a company with over 80 artics on the road and lives in a house you could loose an elephant in for a week without finding it. Whenever he wants a job doing he'll haggle over the quote I do for him. But.. Whenever I do a large/longer term job he'll be out several times to see how we're doing and he's never left without asking about my finances and offering to pay me an advance "I don't want to have you out of pocket" When a job's finished the money will be in my account on the Tuesday after I email him his invoice, without fail. I have another large customer with similar fortunate circumstances, also haggles like a Turkish market-salesman but does it when I hand him my invoice, then I have to send him a few reminders after which he will eventually pay up in full. I add a little for the extra hassle... But even with that little extra I'd rather work for the "easy payer" for 5% less as its just so much nicer to work and feel appreciated, and know that that appreciation will be expressed in full as soon as you're done.
  14. I don't mill (yet?!) but for timber frame construction I use a sumitsubo, it's the Japanese equivalent of the chalk line but uses ink rather than chalk. It gives a far crisper clearer line than chalk and is easier to apply and read on wet timber. Good call on the pencils, used to have some German ones that had black ink mixed in with the graphite and they would mark in any conditions, again lovely and crisp. Can't remember what they were called though...
  15. Two ducks won't keep two drakes happy, they'll just fight over them and then shag those two to death.
  16. LAND ROVER 110 DEFENDER TIPPER 200TDI 4 X 4 TREE SURGEON / AGRICULTURAL | eBay
  17. It's may and he's heading into winter, that's southern hemisphere then. He sells his wood for a dollar that's worth about 50p, which pretty much narrows him down to a colonial. It says "Dunedin, New Zeeland" in his profile. So I dunno, maybe Australian?
  18. Just make sure to stay on the eastern side of the river, it's where the sun comes up, and besides there be some strange folk living west of the river:biggrin: Good luck.
  19. Knowing where you live in the country, where are you fleeing to Gerrit? Can't think of many places much better apart from perhaps the islands but a serious lack of trees there.
  20. Hi Will, couldn't help but notice you contradict yourself so well. No offence intended. (I'd insert smiley here, but on phone so no smilies at hand)
  21. It was a hypothetical statement mr Huck, I'm really busy as it stands, don't have time to do any paid work whatsoever! I was just thinking about the countless guys that come on here offering their help for free to gain experience (how many people in a similar, qualified, able but not employed situation are there?) the scores of laid-off builders, landscapers etc.
  22. Look at it from the other side, there's able people about with a trailer and a saw, a fair few of them I bet. If it was within my ten-minute radius I'd go and do it for the wood. And before you go all "look how you're destroying our industry" on me, consider this: If I have no jobs on, and have the time and equipment anyway, surely it would be bad business sense not to? The bills will still need paying, whether I go and sort them or watch tv so I loose nothing, the wood will easily cover the cost of the fuel, and they can keep the brash, probably sell it to another lucky buyer for pea-sticks or whatever.
  23. A bit off topic, sorry but could you make 1 and a bit inch square, 9 inch long kindling from oak? are kindling machines able to do that? I need a reasonable quantity of oak pegs and a load of blanks like that would make life a lot easier.
  24. Apologies, that wasn't very helpful on the winching front. On the "forum etiquette" side of things however, it is considered bad form to type your posts in caps, it equals shouting in a face to face conversation. I could have told you that first though, rather than posting what I did.
