  1. Um, nitpicking as I am well aware , but I tink that some of the tracked carriers come from Japan complete with factory? fitted cranes, as I have seen them so advertised, not with log grabs though. Signed, Mr. Pedantic!
  2. One of the most popular vehicles in our yard is one of the oldest, a 1996 VW Transporter crewcab dropside, the rear is never used for passengers, merely "clag" but it makes all the difference.
  3. "Galvafroid" (check spelling?) brand is one brand, bloody expensive though, it is supposed to be virtually as good as hot dip galvanising, but does definately not look the same, much flatter/duller plain grey colour.
  4. Pertinent or not , we planted some woodland under a grant scheme, our biggest threat was from Hares, as the neighbours earlier planting had been very badly affected. And a small area that I had privately planted earlier had also been eaten by Hares. I did not stake or mulch or spray round the newly planted trees:blushing: however I noted that probably due to the high grass cover the Hares did not attack/eat the latest planting, almost certainly because they could not get visibility for safety. So back to that old Forester suggestion. The slips or whips were sufficiently high to not be choked by the grass , plus until they got established the grass actually sheltered them, imho only of course. I like to think I invented the concept of benign neglect.
  5. I remembered! A mate (a wheen o year ago mind ) ran an, even then, old Peugeot 405/504? pickup. The glow plug timer unit/relay failed, so she widnay start in the winter. As a very temporary "bodge" John ran a couple of old cooker weight flat twin & earth cables , one direct from the battery, toher direct from the glow plugs. Both these cables came out from below the bonnet and were then fanked, i.e. wisted around the drivers door mirror. To start, twist ends together, count to 30/45 seconds and untwist. It worked so well John did not ever bother replacing the faulty relay/timer unit. I liked that one.
  6. Sounds good to me, why should culprits "get off" simply because of a devious if not downright lying defence stratedgy, we have had much unfortunate experience of this during our recent "troubles". That is all.
  7. Erm, The Plod in court testifying under an alais, does it really matter what name he used as long as he simply told the truth? I do appreciate there are "technecalities" but simplistically? How many other witness have given evidence under false names that we are unaware of, such as those given new identies by the authorities, so what is the difference?
  8. What are the economics of extracting 50 tonne per day, once finance, depreciation, plus fuel and labour costs are included, surely it is quite/very expensive? timber. All purely based on "gut" feelings.
  9. **************** But actually it would probably be more cost effective to purchase a suitable low ground pressure machine, than to pave a suitable roadway in. Mooroka? (& check spelling) here I come! Cheers M I were too late to edit my last post btw
  10. Erm, as a bog trotter, I feel that the rest of yousens are unfamiliar with the extreme difficulties in working in 3m deep "rank moss". I need sommat with wide tracks, which are of course more likely to get popped off on a stump. Bugger! PS Aside from the costs a tracked dumper might be a runner. Re the rubber/steel track question.......... having experience with rubber tracks on a 360 excavator, and very poor, had to pull her off the job, but back a year later with similar size steel tracks on the very same ground conditions and was a different machine entirely. Quite astounding the difference the change in tracks made. Cheers M
  11. But I intend to winch the trees (boles?) into beside the splitter, cut 1.0m length off, split to size, then cut to length. My trees are very varied in girth & straightness. Considering using new bought Krpan equipment. Krpan do a simple affordable PTO mounted winch for their 21/25 tonne splitter, which I tink should be fittable to the 13 or 17 tonne model also. Ps I appear to like overcomplicated or even bodged solutions
  12. I am considering making my own firewood processor too. By setting up a PTO driven log splitter close coupled (but quickly detatchable) to a PTO driven saw/elevator combination, a simple double groove pully on each PTO stub, with V belts, and connect the tractor to the log splitter since it is the heavier load. This would really require two operators for max efficency but has the virtue of being able to work with any size/akward timber. And up the elevator straight into vented bulk log bags. Simples? Yes? Ps Also cheaper than any firewood processor
  13. I beg to differ, if used to double up the 3.5 tonne line pull, that is then 7 tonnes, which clearly exceeds the rated 5 tonne. I would still do it though since there will be a Factor of Safety of at least 2, & possibly 2 twice over, designed in. But then I am a sole private operator, with some uncommon sense.(apparently, from personal observations)
  14. And there I was blissfully carrying a 7.62mm rifle on the London underground, I did feel a bit of a prat with the rifle case between my knees though. Plus a 6" lock blade Opinal forby, It was 1982 mind, an I was an innocent looking youth:001_tt2:
  15. Thompson, No I did nothing, I still feel bad about that too, but what could I do?, they were in the process of leaving, there was no security to be seen and they would quite happily have kicked my head in if I had intervened or even spoken up ( I can only surmise) btw many years ago in France we camped on a Municipal site beside proper "travellers" a very tidy Fendt caravan, with a stupendous towed kitchen trailer, and immaculate new Transit Van. The men folk were off very early in the morning, and the women folk were rarely seen, they were to all appearances decent people, despite their travelling lifestyle. On the other had we came through the village that hosts the Puck Fair, Killorglan? village perhaps, anyway the day after, a complete disaster area, knee deep in litter & trash, though I do understand that some toursits also visit this renowned Gypsy dominated event.
  16. Oh, i'd be guessing .......................if I said 55HP
  17. We are all human beings, Axe murderers, psycopaths, mad dictators, bankers, child molestors, the full spectrum are all human. However the individuals or groups behavouir dictates how they are regarded by the greater community. I would very reasonably believe that the so called "travellers" appear to regard themselves as above the law, whilst preying on mostly decent, mostly law abiding, mostly tax paying citizens, preferably the older & more vunerable the better, and yes I could name two older people in the local Community so preyed apon. And yes, I am aware there are dodgy locals as well. I do appreciate that there will be some decent ones among them , but unfortunately the general "traveller" image is well deserved, and yes, they are not wanted in their "homeland" either, one wonders why? PS I witnessed 3 of them (=travellers) abuse a waitress in a motorway burger place in the middle of the afternoon, then by climbing over tables to be disruptive as possible, left without paying. I have never witnessed such behaviour from any other group.
  18. Might I add that really really really one needs sommat approaching the Germanic integrated approach, the boiler & thermal store located in a basement below the house so as to (i) give a longer flue & (ii) utilize any "waste" heat escaping from the boiler & associated plumbing, plus one can then tip the firewood down through a hatch. Plus (iii) tend the boiler without leaving the house I am currently attempting to build a reasonably insulated "room" round my boiler that is located under a shed roof outside. Partly to prevent heat loss, partly to attempt to get my wood drier & warmer before putting it in the boiler. Insulation has got bloody expensive btw.
  19. And if I said I "installed" a stove 15 years ago by sticking a length of flue pipe up the 9" flue liner and "clufing" the gap with glass wool, and that the chimney has never been cleaned in 15 years, despite being run for 6 months of the year 24/7....... and that the stove still works perfectly i.e. "it pulls like a train", I would really need to replace the glass wool with rock wool as it kindles occasionally and falls out in a glassy lump. Ps Who or what are Hetas?
  20. difflock

    Why not?

Start with an Iveco Daily 5.2 tonne chassis, downplate it to 4.75 t (v simple to do,...... erm well leastwise when new) = legal to tow a 3500kg tlr.( based on the 8250kg GTW/MAM) 1.25 t better payload, albeit at the expense of 4WD. Is there a 4.6 tonne chassis as well? Cheers M
  21. Erm, Perhaps not, economies of scale will/should apply across all industries. Look at how Mail is centralised to be sorted, ditto the UPS operation in the US of A. Or consider the apparent nonsense of vast distribution centres. If bigger machinery is more efficient, even aside from the reduction in labour cost input, one then requires to centralise i.e. "draw in" & draw back out. And despite haulage costs I do not see that a local "one man band" could compete with an industrial scale operation on productivity & therefore price? PS I am a "wannabe" one man band.
  22. I may not help but when I bolted the seat runners from a Galaxy into the back of the Steyr Puch Van (cos I could use the spare seats from our Galaxy) & fitted seat belts too btw. I showed it to our local DVLA, at Coleraine, the lassie came out to the car park peered in and said, sure its only temporary:confused1: I was registering the van as private light goods (i think?) I then turned up for my first MOT, & I was booked into the HGV lane:lol: cheers M
  23. Having had & burned both Birch and now mostly Lodgepole Pine. It's a bloody nuicence keeping the stove fuelled with the pine. Plus due to the density I can not store as much beside the fire, well I can store "as much" just there is less burning in the volume. And really I should have put in a 50Kw log boiler rather than the 40Kw. 40Kw fine on Birch, but needs more re-fuelling when fed on lodgepole.
  24. Sniff Drive a Steyr Puch selectable 4 WD "on the fly" and 2 mechanical locking diffs Truely a proper 4WD
  25. We should blush (or so the Midwife thought:001_tt2:) The Missis had an emergency section the first time, 11.5 months later she had an elective section. Then we quit.Though I would a kinda liked 4 in under 4 years. I did suggust that the surgeon could fit some sort of Zipper:lol: to the Missis. Sigh Ps A dry ould stick of an Aunt on my mothers side sniffed and put me in my place. They cracked the second one out in 10.5 months:biggrin: Gulp!
