  1. Having had & burned both Birch and now mostly Lodgepole Pine. It's a bloody nuicence keeping the stove fuelled with the pine. Plus due to the density I can not store as much beside the fire, well I can store "as much" just there is less burning in the volume. And really I should have put in a 50Kw log boiler rather than the 40Kw. 40Kw fine on Birch, but needs more re-fuelling when fed on lodgepole.
  2. Sniff Drive a Steyr Puch selectable 4 WD "on the fly" and 2 mechanical locking diffs Truely a proper 4WD
  3. We should blush (or so the Midwife thought:001_tt2:) The Missis had an emergency section the first time, 11.5 months later she had an elective section. Then we quit.Though I would a kinda liked 4 in under 4 years. I did suggust that the surgeon could fit some sort of Zipper:lol: to the Missis. Sigh Ps A dry ould stick of an Aunt on my mothers side sniffed and put me in my place. They cracked the second one out in 10.5 months:biggrin: Gulp!
  4. Hmmm, Most successful, back in about 1993, driving the wee petrol Polo on a filthy februrary night far from home, & the car conked out. Heavily pregent wife plus 10 month old wean on board. gulp! (as I did the car maint) I lifted the bonnet and immediately espied the distributor cap was askew. On removing it the rotor arm was mangled with the brass bit completely chewed & useless. Hmmmm, A lump of Blutack and a paperclip fabricated a new electrical contact for the distributor arm, which worked perfectly the first attempt. After I bought a replacment I ran the car for 6 or 9 months on the impromptu repair. I belive I may NOT have told the wife that I was the guilty party with respect to the incorrectly fastened distributor cap. People have asked me bytimes why I always carry a lump of Blutack stuck to the dash, even in a new car. One never knows.
  5. see also MOD Sales, Military Vehicles & Ex MOD Land Rovers for Sale I spend too much time perusing that site along with Jacksons at Bawtry
  6. Seeing as I work for a local authority I am aware of some of the "lone working" issues. However I would not wish to drag my staff into any unnecessary disrepute by ALWAYS "doubling up" PS How do most of the farming Community manage? I do not think you would be able to afford red meat if the livestock farmers insisted in routinely "doubling up" I know there are accidents including fatel ones, but life is full of risk, assessed or otherwise. I work alone in the woods at the back of the house, with a chain saw, & I am aware that I could be killed as a result. I find it concentrates the mind wonderfully. It could still happen mind. But I am much more likely to get killed crossing the road.
  7. An there I thought one was meant to toss the caber:001_rolleyes:
  8. Cor!, I feel a wee bit better after reading some/most of the above posts. In that I was feeling a trifle inadequate in my firewood output (whilst working alone mind) Anyway I had been swithering about (i) either getting a firewood processor or (ii) cutting to nominal 1.0m length with a chainsaw, splitting, then running the split lengths through a circular saw with a wee elevator attatched, either after stacking & seasoning or immediately into vented bulk bags. After seeing the palaver at both Wilsons & Fuelwoods demo days with the %age of the time the operators spent with the covers up "hoking" at the logs in the machine I concluded that a seperate splitter and saw would be better for my somewhat bent & knotty 30 year old Lodgepole Pine's. Cept i only got one old tractor therefore one PTO only, therefore need to switch about. Bugger
  9. I would be the first to admit that if the public sector does not set out to recruit the useless or dysfunctional..........but it sure does not get rid of them...............rather it sends them for "training" ...................which since one cannot "fail" is less than useless..............or mostly works around them. I am "blessed" with this unfortunate phenomena..................I even had the cheek to attempt to get rid of a worse than useless newley appointed tradesman during his probationary period................all without avail............mind some of my more senior offiers may well think the same of me:001_tt2: PS At 52 I hope to retire with a reduced pension in another 2 years:lol:
  10. I was truely shocked to read some of the links I came across on Benzworld referring to the absolutly mad saleries, benefits perks and pensions that SOME USA workers enjoyed. New York Police Dept, Teachers, and some of those loony California based "Councils" or whatever you call your local authorities on their million dollar saleries for "senior Managment" It COULD not last folks. Born a small farmers son and the breeding stuck, i.e. no such thing as a "free lunch" or an easy living, simply live within ones means no matter how modest, or attemt to change ones means.
  11. My wife was a teacher, she is now medically retired with arthritis, she was on so many drugs for the pain that she was dolally/disfunctional. She could have held her job, (which she loved) and salary under "disibility rights legislation" but choose not to, as she was not prepared to blight the pupils futures........ in conscience she got a generous "deal" Not however as generous as the various other useless teachers who retired "sick" because they were crap and had to be bought off........since they could not be sacked. btw this is a decent grammar type school, they are not dealing with oiks as pupils. So expensive "sweetheart" deals are one problem, & increasing longivity is another. I work in a local authority, I am still on a final salry scheme though the terms & conditions were amended recently, my pension will be "pro-rated" "X" years under the old scheme "y" years under the new. But again within my small org some of the problems in conscience lie highr up, guy appointed to chief Exec, stays in the job 3 years 2 of these being on the sick,....but still goes out on the Chief Exec inflated pension. That is neither right nor sustainable. But simply, with longer expected lifespans sommat has got to give
  12. Not yet, for me it would be a luxury, I might buy a "buckshee" one offen e-bay or wherever mind, for when I wish to single handedly fell a tree against its natural inclination:blushing:
  13. I must say that I wanted an electro hydraulic, but reckoned that with my casual almost hobby usage I could not justify one, so opted for the rope operated version. Once I saw it on the back of the tractor and how the mechanism stuck out the side etc etc, I swopped it for an Electro hydraulic version.(& Thank you Jeffery) I was well pleased with my decision as when I am "sliping" a buch of logs down the Rodding I can slack the winch before the softer bits and winch them in again, more straightfordwardly than with a rope operated winch? I run a 5 tonne Kerpan on a nominal 85 HP DB 1490, which is about all the old girl is fit for, and is as big as I need. I Only got manky conifers:thumbdown: One point perhaps is that the Electro hydraulic comes standard with the lower line speed, in the rope operated one can choose either or (0.60m/s or 0.90m/s?) I really swithered between the Uniforest & the Kerpan, with virtually no difference in the price. Cheers M
  14. Yes he had a beautiful face ( but so some do blonde bimbos) And He was truly the dumb blonde of the dog world.(How could you not love me??) Did I mention the skull so thick it bust the windscreen in the "G", & was he hurt or offended......dammn the bit of it......not at all..... that same happy smile. We had to get him rehoused as he absolutly psychotically fell in love with me (hey it that dumb blonde thinngy again) and was equally jealous of the other dogs. This mixed up emotion caused him to pish on top of me when I was tucked up in bed, an boy when he pished........................ he PISHED. So he went to a one dog family where he apparently fitted in. PS He was so stupid that he did not even know sheep should be chased, I was fetching a misbehaving Jack Russel out of a field of sheep, "Duke" followed me and stood dumbly at my side. Scheesh.
  15. Hmmmmm, Dalmatians, I had heard the stories, but nah couldnay all be true??. Anyway the local pound had a magnificent male specimen, perhaps a touch of big strong hound breeding in there but marked lovely, sweet temperment, and "ringle eyed" So I took him. Observations (i) His tail was specifically designed to polish coffee tables, after it had clatted the ornaments sideways. (ii) At least 2 brain cells were active at any one time. (iii) a "killing" machine, hamsters, chickens, mice etc etc (iv) like most males a misguided faith in his fighting abilities.......£400.00 to stich him up after he attempted to take a bone offen the 1/2 bred Staffies pup. The Staffie had one wee nick in her paw btw. & Duke still reckoned he had "won" the fight!! And could that F!"£$% run, 12 or 15 miles along the beach behind the "G" Wagen, at about 15mph absolutly effortless and a pleasure to watch....when I stopped at a stream to let him get a drink...... he choose to bound up into the sandhills, hey he was only warmed up! A whole "life changing" experience
  16. Indeed, (being a farmers son), there is as in ALL trades the odd handless one, but mostly farmers can & will turn their hand to anything, and are generally successful too:001_tt2: & Especially with ANYTHING mechanical. If in doubt take a vist to the britishfarmingforum and draw your own conclusions. However as yer lumberjack said "Ya caint fix stupid" That is all.
  17. It must be said that as a 16 year Morso stove operator and more recently a 40Kw logburning central heating boiler owner. I am saying to anyone who asks that heating oil is actually cheap! Insulate, insulate insulate, then simply pay for the oil................unless one has an unlimited free source of firewood.
  18. We run Stihl FS200 strimmers here, a doz or so of. For this past 8 or 9 years, the strimmers are up to 5 and 6 years old. I do not know they exist, they simply keep going. When we ran the Japanese , or briefly Husky strimmers my heart was broke, endless problems. Cheers M
  19. Whats the difference between a Land Rover and a "G" Wagen The "G" Wagen keeps the oil in and the water out:blushing:should I be:001_rolleyes: signed a proud Steyr Daimler Puch owner:001_tt2: Actually I set out to buy a Landrover but "G"'s were cheaper second hand:confused1: Picture to follow
  20. In my humble opinion tree surgeons appear to use more jargon than any other profession I know of, it all sounds very impressive but I haint got a clue what it actually means:blushing:being a mere "stick cutter" just a thought M
  21. Again it was my "understanding" that the Balcas pellets would be delivered by a truck the identical same as the ones that deliver the bulk animal feed. This may even have happened at first, except the early Balcas pellets were not well enough "baled" ( as is my understanding)and therefore absorbed atmospheric moisture and turned into mush thus bridging in the hopper. It may be our stinking wet North Atlantic climate had a bearing on this. They are now , as far as I am aware , delivered in wee sealed 20 kg plastic bags, real enviro-friendly:lol:
  22. North Co Antrim, near the source of the best Whiskey in the world:001_tt2: One reason I posted was that back when the grants were on here in N Ireland for to install wood fired heating systems. Balcas , or their agents/subcontractors, appeared to "fiddle" the grants in that the consumer who was meant to pay 50% up to a preset limit, got it for 0.0% Cos if one installed a pellet burner & undertook to buy Balcas pellets for 5? years, it was a completely free installation. It may however have been completely kosher in that Balcas stumped up the consumers 50% up front. Wonder how that is going down with consumers locked into a contract to purchase, and inflating prices? Hmmmm I fitted a log burner, I paid my 50%
  23. As a "born n bred" Norn Iron person, I actually like Brian James trailers like! See:http://www.brianjames.co.uk/range/default.aspx?id=6
  24. Erm, I dont think I am "registered", an it opened for very non computer literate:blushing: me PS I got the link from the Greenbuildingforum
  25. http://energy.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/2252910/?UserKey=#ixzz1NRZeXSDH Perhaps this has already been posted? Cheers M
