  1. Thanks all for the various sensible suggestions. I already got a tractor and reasonable linkarm mounted forklift. But need the tractor to drive the log splitter or PTO saw, plus it is less than handy looking over ones shoulder, plus very clumsy inside a shed.(4WDtractor) IN the first instance another tractor with a loader would be the obvious solution. And a 390T would be perfect. I also toyed with the skidsteer notion. PS yon e-bay Sanderson looked good but is the oil-in-water from the classic porous Ford block, as opposed to a more straightforward head gasket.....hmmm. PPS thanks re the gas bottles/ for the gas Yale, yer salesman somehow forgot to mention the cylinders were different when I specifically asked were they the same as the domestic propane ones As you all can figger, I am terrible at (i) making my mind up and (ii) spending money. But I do get there eventually, honest. My excuse is that I am a lateral thinker always looking for "outside the box solutions" thanks again Marcus

  3. I deliberately phrased my question as I did simply because I had started with the notion that I "needed" a Telehandler. A few seemingly reasonably knowledgable folk locally seemed to reckon that a telehandler in any reasonable nick would be nearer 10k which I could not justify Ditto a loader tractor, mostly well knackered at my price point. So I boiled it down to what was affordable. AND, But, However What about an Entwhistle, Ex Army rough terrain forklift, £7500.00 plus vt coul;d buy one with good tyres and low hours. cheers m

I would like sommat with forward reach, but essentially could probably manage with a small yard forklift, i.e. something that will travel over well consolidated reasonably level hardcore as well as concrete. I can apparently buy a gas powered 2000 kg capacity Yale with a triple mast for about 2500 to 3000 £'s I reckon owt diesel is more likely to be knackered, and with low usuage gas should be fine, we cook on the orange propane so I would always have a spare cylinder handy. Is there any merit in considering the JCB Teletruck, or are they an overpriced gimmick? cheerrs Marcus PS for handling log bags mainly, on the other hand sommat rough terrain like an old Sanderson or Manitou could work with logs as well if it had the 3rd service for a grab.
  5. Unfortunately the Toe-rag who was the main mover in fund raising for the NI Air ambulance took about 97% for running costs, incl I presume a fat salery and generous expenses. Plus I fear our Society is getting swamped with loads of "ad-hoc" rescue organisations, all generally set up by blokes with big egos who need to feel self important. And have their toys hobby funded forby. Lough Foyle rescue Service ( no nowt about them btw, jist presuming) Bann? Valley rescue service etc etc If my/our local experience is any guide. Mountain rescue is a bit different.
  6. We ran these in the Cem mowers for years, mowers well cared for but due to sheer usuage they literally fell to bits, tread worn off the tyres etc. I dont think we ever even needed to change a plug in the wee Suziki 120 2-stroke engine. a fabolous engine. And Run on 50:1 Stihl mix Cheers M
  7. Wor "Pongo" did at first think the topmost log in the pile was the optimum Supervisory position, until I winched a log out from below him. Tee Hee Being an intelligent dog he stayed well back after that snoozing on a cutting of Astroturf. Ps He only be 3 weeks out of the pound. An absolutly perfectly behaved dog, ESPECIALLY for a Jack Russell.   8. Dont be too judgmental. I will admit I used a wee chain saw and a tractor powered splitter btw. Started with full length/mixed length trees, in a pile. See M Deeply Fraudian in the title btw intended "3 days" but with the purchase price o the splitter £ days works too
  9. Pure simple Primary School arthimatic. I cannot see how one can go down to 3500 from 2600 btw. But there will ALWAYS be an aluminium type plate, generally pop rivetted, below the bonnet or on a door jamb. It will have a whole plethoration of numbers / figures on it. GVM = the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle with fuel, pax, tools, clag , whetever. Axle weights, numbered as in axle 1 axle 2 etc. These are the max permissabile masses for each axle, the sum of all axles WILL be more than the GVM, To allow for reasonable overloading of any particular axle Then GTM , a bigger number/the biggest number, this specifies the trailer weight towable, by subtracting GTM-GVM, and always the plated weights, no nonsense that the truck will be underloaded therefore allowed more on the trailer etc etc. However the only anomoly is that it is the actual laden weight of the trailer being towed, NOT/regardless of what the trailer is plated at gibber mutter twitch I do understand the subject, jist na guid at explaining it. cheers Marcus
  10. As a non abrocultrist?, but at 52 years of age of being an observer of human nature, bytimes. Unfortunately in ALL trades there are those who have got the inherent "knack" and regardless of training or insurance WILL do well. There are also those who despite being passionate about what they do, are not good at it. Some of them realize this , most dont. I could name 2 plumbers of good repute who despite being handy wit the blow torch are crap, simply because they lack "cognative function", quite genuinely I am a better plumber, and I aint a plumber, but I plumbed a 4000 sq foot house incl underfloor in 1996 without mishap or leaks to date. Ditto yer man in the HGV who said he could not get in a particular gap, I as a non HGV driver told him different, when the next driver turned up he assessd the gap on the way past and swung her in in reverse. i am sure we all know of crap mechanics?? Getting the picture? I could go on I am not superman, i do make mistakes and get things wrong When I do I know why? That is unfortunately the difference Cheers Marcus

    Darn it pro bros beat me to it A turbo Daily 4 by 4 is about all I figger fits between a LR and a Mog. Well after the startlingly obvious "G" Wagen of course. And tyres tyres tyres tyres tyresz tyres etc etc etc Could consider one o the cast Army Renault Dodge 4 by 4's that Withams has a pile o at present. I suggest this precisely because they were bought to replace LR's that did not have enough cargo/weight capacity. Ugly as sin, and I have no idea as to their off road capabilities but some were also equipped as standard wit hydraulic winches to the front worth considering About £3000/£3500 if I recall and finally sniff beam axles are NOT necessary Ever driven a Prinzguar off road, proper awesome, plus absolutly fablous on road, drive like a comfy car.......absolutly great kit. Pity it were petrol but I dare say a gas conversion could make sense.

  19. I'll try & post photos Fingers crossed An again (i) I like the single handed operation. (ii) Could have done with a slightly more powerful winch. (iii) Needs better spring loaded? Tongs for the winch (iv) Needs a big "D" grab handle mounted to the bottom of the ram cylinder area to grab while scuffing the base plate clean. (v) Need a wee Avant to service her/ cart the sticks away. (vi) Need a big roof over the whole lot:001_rolleyes: ???? How was this for Sat & Sun Production for an ould done Man, wit Sciatia?   20. Hmmmmmm, Well I know really only part time use, but I have always used a chainsaw on my own, for 35 years. I am aware of the risks, however I doubt even someone beside me could do much if I snick the big artary. I do try and not take unnecessary risks, but after 30 years working, in local Government, I have concluded that yon Yankee lumberjack was spot on "Ye caint fix stoopid". Anyway at going on 53 with the snick 10 year ago I see myself as expendable:blushing:

  22. Our flue is 9" earthenware lined surrounded by Vermicilite type stuff. House was built in 1995, we moved in for the winter of 1996. A Morso stove has burned for 6 months of each year, sometimes for 24-7. The flue has NEVER been cleaned. And probably this past 5 years or so I have been burning mostly softwood. It has been a long time since I heard it burn either. But still pulls like a train so I can only presume OK Cheers M
  23. A pure pleasure compared to the wee 13 tonne petrol engined one i used to hire. Bought a Krpan with the wee 1 tonne PTO winch, works exactly as I had hoped/planned. I will soon have run through what I thought was a fairly large pile o Lodgepole Jist need some better road to get mair bugger trees oot o the Moss.

I would prefer to burn Birch, but currently running on Lodgepole, I try to keep the chunks larger to slow the burn a bit, cos I am too lazy to replace the rope seals, and the stove is a trifle "leaky" but all is good. I am happy with the way it burns weight for weight. PS I thought I was the only one bringing firewood in, in the wheel barrow
