  1. I was only thinking that the other day, apparently it's something to do with dogs eating bones. Your right though, it's something you don't see much anymore
  2. Is there a exact spot the hole has to go on the 540 ?
  3. Rob, Are you having a stand at the APF ?
  4. Just thought I'd give an update, new bearings, oil seals, gaskets and while I was at it a pair of new piston rings and a small end bearing. Tried it earlier and seems to run fine. Like you said spud, tricky job but I got there in the end.
  5. About 10-12 years ago, stihl used to list a price for the old MS200T / 020T with a 16" bar in the annual catalogue.
  6. Like eddy says, I've just checked and they are exactly the same
  7. Arbtalk member 'Slack ma girdle' is down your way. It might be cheaper in the long run just to buy some good quality hardwood firewood of a local merchant ?
  8. Thanks
  9. Nice work. Is that 9 & 13mm tenex ? Where did you buy the rings ?
  10. Basically it's climb to the very top of the tree, pick the cones and put them in a bag that's attached to your harness. Once it's full, send it down to be emptied and more of the same. We found the cones are only in the top 4m/5m of the tree. We're doing the same at the end of September on some Douglas fir's that are at least 35m.
  11. We both used friction savers but I think most of the sap just transferred from our hands to the rope/hitch.
  12. Hi all, Been climbing Macedonian pines today picking the cones that will be sent to Alice holt to be grown on. Quite an enjoyable day with 2 of us collecting approx. 1500 cones. The only problem is that our hands, ropes and hitches are covered in in the most stickiest sap I have ever known. It's was raining this morning and we kept quite clean but once it dried up this afternoon the stuff become unreal. I'm used to spruce sap but this stuff is in a different league. Anyone else done any picking or got any tips on clearing gear afterwards ?
  13. I've just done what you said and no movement on the flywheel side but there's play on the clutch side for sure. I've done bearings on stihls but never on a husky, I'll see how I get on and report back. Thanks for the advice.
  14. Thanks spud, I'll give it a try. I was going to ask you direct but didn't want to bother you. I know my description of the noise wasn't very good though ! Even though it's only 2 years old it's done its fair share of work. I'd be surprised if it was the bearings but it's the only thing I could think of.
  15. I've got a 2012 that's quickly developed a sort of echo/rattle sound and it seems to have a lot of vibration on the flywheel side. I thought it could be crank bearings, anyone got any experience of anything similar ?
  16. Their forecasting 3 or 4 degrees overnight here in mid wales later in the week so it'll be going on for sure. Shocking really for mid August.
  17. This beech has had some Ganoderma adspersum brackets for a couple of years now but this year they seem to have gone mad.
  18. Second that about the buck's, after many years I somehow broke mine. I found out they come with a guarantee, so I posted it back to America for about £3.50 and got a brand new one in the post a week later.
  19. I see what you mean, thanks for pointing it out
  20. On a slightly different train of thought but have you considered putting solar panels on your roof ? Quite a good return over the 20 year feed in tariff period.
  21. I've had a Clarke set from machine mart for about 15 years, served me well.
  22. On the rigging rope I've got the large one on one end and a smaller one on the other, no real reason other then to have the 2 options. I can girth hitch a karabiner with the big eye to keep everything aligned.
  23. And a large eye (30cm of rope) in my new Yale Portland braid lowering rope.
  24. I've been doing various splices for a while now, so I thought I'd post a few pictures. 12mm Teufelberger sirius, one tight eye and a larger one the other end.
  25. If there's a bit of wood still sticking out, clamp it in a vice and knock the metal section down with a hammer and chisel. If it's broken of flush, I've put them on the fire for 5 - 10 minutes and the wooden wedge drops out straight away.
