  1. I agree, comfort and spec should have nothing to do with it- not all buisnesses are going to want bog basic. The problem that HMRC surely is that people are claiming work trucks when they use them largely for personal use- you could use that argument with anything regardless of spec. Should a web designer also be expected to only use basic spec laptops rather than an Apple Mac?
  2. Also if buying used you may be able to find a decent example which has no VAT, which if your not registered means a fair saving in itself. Currently looking at buying a new 1.8ton digger. Initial cost is £17k ex vat but With the VAT and finance interest I will be paying approx an additional £5500 is ‘dead’ money which I will never see back come resale. The idea of waiting untill a tidy used example with no vat will make a considerable saving to me. That said the new machinery I have bought in the past has been hassle free due to no downtime and repairs tough call!

Iv personally never asked for any money up front and will generally do up to £5k of work (inc materials) before expecting any payment, if the job is bigger than this I think it’s fair to ask to be paid in stages before the job is complete. What you describe just sounds like a run of the mill day to day job and I doubt many would expect payment until completion of the job. Each to their own though!

Personally I think it’s absolutely mad that a cyclist with no real protection can share the same few square meters of space with potentially 30 tons of speeding metal trying to squeeze past only feet away- bonkers IMHO. i used to cycle a bit on the road- not in a Lycra high powered kind of way, normally on a mountain hike getting from A to B, it’s been 8 years since I last cycled on the road and I can honestly say it won’t happen again and I won’t be encouraging my daughter to either as she grows up untill proper dedicated cycle lanes are in place and cycling on the road is outlawed.

  7. I would have equally insisted that’s I’d prefer to spend time with my family on a nice bank holiday than work for demanding customers!

I was thinking it’d be for this reason, but then it doesn’t really make sense, as say in a cold country in minus temeperatures it’d take longer than 3 mins for the hydraulic fluid to get to the same temperature as a machine in a hot country that’s only just been started. Personally with my digger I let the oil warm up with some idling followed by gentle ‘exercises’ before subjecting it to proper work. Fine if you are going to be using it for 8 hours not so if just need to move a load of logs!
  9. Not a bad idea Marcus! You may be onto something. It could be really simple designs- a long ram that pushes the counterweight out on a sliding bit of box section. Certainly be ideal if working space was not an issue

  11. Is it weak tracking even in low speed? Thw TB125 has good pushing power in low but as soon as it steps up to high speed it drops dramatically. i think all manufacturers are a little over enthusiastic when looking at their literature specs. To be taken with a pinch of salt for sure.

I’m just not sure on what I think about the TB225, looking at the specs it really only has about an extra 20cm reach and full height over the TB216 yet weighs an extra 600kg, the lift capacity is quite a bit greater thought. I had a price for a TB216 and it was £17k and the TB225 was £24.5k which is quite a big increase and then I start to think for another grand or two you could have a 2.8 tonner which with the right trailer and tow vehicle can theoretically be do-able and really is much more of a machine than the tb225 in terms of reach and lift capacity.
  13. As others have said go for conventional tail if poss. There are still quite a few models at the 2.8t but admittedly some are some are being somewhat optimistic when they claim to be towable! If your not buying new. Then Takeuchi tb125 and Kubota KX71-3 are probably the best machines that can just about be towed. I have the former and it’s been fantastic, but it is a lump behind the defender no doubt- that said Iv been towing this size behind the same defender regularly for 6 years and have had minimal issues.

I know what you mean, but I know a few farmers with displaced farm round here that cart their swing shovels on behind a tractor, generally it means you can get it accross fields etc where a lorry wouldn’t get to. admittedly I don’t see a digger on the back of anything but a tractor round there ‘ere parts!
  16. Digger bucket should have been tied down anyway so can’t see it raising on its own. just seen the digger has split from its undercarriage- blimey!
  17. You have to be a complete idiot for this to happen. If I had a load that had any chance of hitting an overhead structure I’d either find an alternative route or at least slow down to a crawl to make sure it’s gojng to go under.
  18. I went there for the first time at Christmas time. Just how a service station should be- I noticed it attracted an altogether nicer breed of people too!
  19. What for, Same? Not really sure because in the 4 years Iv had it it hasn’t needed a thing except filters etc. I have a Same dealer nearby who I got the tractor off- they reckon they can get parts in just as quickly as anything else. Same are no longer the oddball marque that they used to be in this country, now they’ve joined with Deutz I would consider them up there with the ‘standard’ brands.

  21. Case 956 is a lovely lovely tractor too- ultra sweet gearbox and engine equality so- just purrs. But it’d definitely sink quicker than my Same.
  22. I love my Same Dorado 86. I reckon it probably has the best power to weight of any tractor I know off. At 3.2 ton and in wide tyres it floats over soft Peat I’m on. (Unless you’ve got TCD driving it!!)
  23. My experience of WBP is that it warps and delaminates unless the edges are sealed oreven better capped. You can get aluminium U capping strips that fit snugly around the edge and keep the laminates together and the water out. i did a chip box like this once and it outlasted the cabstar!

Where abouts are you in the country? iv got mine from CBL and found them very good to deal with in the past- another reason why I went for Tak as our local Kubota dealer doesn’t have a great name. The other machine I was very keen on was the Yanmar sv18. Lovely machine but because it was nearly 2 ton I felt it was gettin too close to the 2.8tonner I already have. I think my top 3 sub 2 tonners would be Takeuchi, Yanmar and Volvo- Fraid the Kubota doesn’t get a look in at this size for me but people become loyal to brands so everyone will say something different!
