  1. Too modest Steve - theres already been and no doubt still going to be a good many hours spent at the computor keeping the raffle on course - well done.
  2. Excellent part of the whole Arbtalk operation and like the fact that everything goes to one charity. This way a concerted effort can be made by concentrating the resources, rather than spreading little bits around a number of charities. Missed last years raffle due to unforeseen circumstances so will put in last years as well as this years Well done to Steve and any helpers for the effort. Edit - thanks to all the sponsors as well for putting up some very attractive shiny bits
  3. well there you go Jon, what was a cider man like you touching that stuff for. Now let that be a lesson
  4. agree with Dean - you will strip the heat out quite quickly if heating a workshop or house. Would need to be done on an industrial scale to make it viable for a single house I would think. On the other hand, it would do no harm if you put your chip pile over a buried pipe array for a geothermal heating system. It would surely improve the COP of the system and have the benefit of not having the pipes in the pile making it much easier to turn over periodically etc.
  5. Looking good, but agree with the comment re not concreting the uprights in next time. Am looking into this at the moment for our wood store - seem to be various options such as bolt on or concrete-in stand-off post bases or precast concrete post bases to keep the post out of the wet.
  6. played both rugby and football and generally enjoy watching both, but dont bother much with top flight football as its spoiled mainly by the prima donna attitude of a lot of the players and I think a bit by the excessive money.
  7. know nothing technical about trees, but would it not be the same as human bodies where for instance blood cells start clotting automatically when expose to air. ie pre-programed automatic responses that require no thought processes? I'll step aside and let the experts tell us .....
  8. nice one slack - mind telling us what you paid for her??
  9. Turbocad is significantly cheaper than Autocad, but there are quite a lot of free offerings out there if you google. Sketchup also already been mentioned
  10. got 3 - x27, hatchet and an inbetween size, cant remember which, for around £100 + postage. Arrived just over a week later. Only problem is I am away for another couple of weeks before I can play with them, but then again the pile of rings aint going anywhere :-)
  11. and all brought here by mans hamfisted fiddling with nature without considering the consequences. Out of those I would have said the Sycamore seems to have had the least net negative effects - possibly ??? As for rap - as the newest on the list is it worth trying to nip it in the bud sharpish before it really gets out of hand?
  12. Just curious as saw one listed at an auction recently - quoted as a 2007 model 530T which was not listed on the Avant web site. Is this a genuine model or not? Dont have the money or a use for one at the moment, but they do look decent bits of kit.
  13. Ted, just wondering what future uses you envisage for the easy lift - could kick of a whole new marketing strategy here, although bearing in mind my post above, best to keep it practical
  14. Dont know about all that. Saw a trailer for a program the other day where a bloke reaconed that if the electricity system in the UK shut down, half the population would be dead within a week. Again dont know about all that - seems a bit extreme to me, but it was interesting a few years ago to see the effects of the blockade of the fuel refineries. Some people were clearly struggling with the concept of not having petrol and you would have thought that a lot of people would have factored it into their lives with regard to where they live versus where they work etc etc, but of course it has been business as usual since and in fact in our area, commuting has sky rocketed. I think the saying oop north is 'nowt as strange as folk' Its a funny old world and I think we are in for interesting times within my lifetime anyway. Theres going to be a lot of adjusting to be done life style wise in the not too distant future. The sooner people get sensible the less dramatic the changes will need to be. Its not rocket science and there are those on here whose grandparents or even parents in some cases, were coping quite happily without all the mod cons. Personaly lived in places during my youth with no electricity and a water supply from a mountain stream. Its surprising how little we really need to survive - most of the 'stuff' we regard as essential these days is just the result of marketing. We just need a change of mindset and a chat with the old folks while they are still around to teach us a few of their tricks. edit - ie if people just come to their senses the S won't HTF
  15. agreed with all that - I enjoy a few treats food and drink wise, the rest is just too much and detracts from what should be an enjoyable day. Just need to persuade a few others in the household now
  16. We have a number of large sycamores in our patch of woodland and they do seem to limit the growth of anything else in their immediate vicinity. Also seem to be popping up all over the place as well, but currently putting a lot of the smaller ones into the firewood pile - as Hodges says, seems to burn well. On previous threads here and elsewhere opinion seems to be polarised along the same lines as marmite - they either love or hate em and not much in between Cant give you anything more technical I'm afraid, but hope that helps
  17. ditto Rich
  18. you mean it was a road. It certainly looks like a river now
  19. :lol:bet the air turned blue after that for a few minutes:lol:
  20. Rich, are you sure about this - thought the piles in fields was animal waste rather than human??
  21. Apart from moisture content, does it also not depend a bit on the particular stove setup with regard to efficiency, fire box temperature (in relation to wood type)etc?? These factors seem to be focused on by manufacturers when it comes to emissions and also effect what is deposited in the flue.
  22. 346xp is off the menu as nobody seems to have any left, unless you can find a decent second hand one
  23. As you sow, so shall you reap
  24. Well now, considering the time of year, Rudolf might be out with his mates doing systems checks?? Yes been down the pub on the cider
