  1. that would be 35 luvvies and one stump grinder op out of work (not counting catering)
  2. I have been through exactly this problem. So firstly bats are not a problem, it is the crazy system put in place to look after them that causes all the hassle. Unless things have changed in the last six years, English Nature are the body charged with overseeing the protection of bats. We found that we were not able to ask English Nature any questions, we had to appoint a Bat Consultant, who were very good, but inevitably we had to pay them. Our Bat Consultant proposed measures for the protection of the Bats, which were eventually approved by English Nature. Effectively, we had to build a bat loft, before works could start in earnest, and I had to be trained to handle bats, so that they could be transferred to the bat loft if found during building works. Your arguments for planning consent are that the bats are better of if there is a building with a loft, than if the whole lot falls down, or is demolished. Contaminated Land, take somje soil samples, send them off to a "competent" lab, they will probably come back ok, send a copy of lab report to BCO and check that he accepts these findings. Job Done. Good Luck
  3. Someone on arbtalk was welding one up, might have been a kit, anyone remember?, is he still out in the shed?? did it get finished?
  4. Definitely agree about boarding the floor, but I was told the cheapest option for the corners was to fill it with woodchip. Do your installers recommend any ventilation in the pit?
  5. and they wouldnt be able to hide under pallets
  6. to quote:-- However, scientists do believe they could eventually grow into the size of sheep, Dr Jan Zalasiewicz, of the University of Leicester in the UK, recently told the BBC. however do they come up with this sort of unsubstantiated twoddle?
  7. Lime mortars shrink more than those made with cement, so you need to keep the work very well wetted while the joint goes off, and it does take longer to go off. Hydraulic lime comes in various grades, the hydraulic refers to the fact that it can set under water, normall lime requires the action of CO2 from the air to make it set. I have only used limes in stone and brick walls and some in plastering, so I cannot give you a mix for pointing stone. However if you have an old lump of mortar, dissolve it with brick cleaner, wash carefully then try to work out how much coarse and how much fine sand there was in the mix.
  8. thanks everyone, it does look like the skunk cabbage, it would seem that it would be unpalatable so not a threat
  9. Thanks stubby, all thumbs this morning
  10. pictures would help
  11. Can anyone give me a name for this plant, it is growing on some land that I am about to graze cattle on and need to check that it is not toxic
  12. Will you have a ramp and tip trailers in? Nice job by the way
  13. The Eta feeder should be ok for 6m of chip stacked over according to the brochure, I dont think you need anything to hold the chips back, they do that themselves but go steady when loading to a\llow the arms to get tucked away Do not walk over the pile, you can fall into the beehive (or so ive heard )
  14. nice place, is it just to heat your house? and what are you putting over the chips?
  15. How about some pictures of your installation
  16. This afternoon my boiler stopped, cause;- one spiky twig that stuck in the opening of the rotary valve. This is the first stoppage in two years of running, which I think is quite remarkable. We had our brash pile chipped through a Heizohack and compared with chipping good round wood the product is ugly. Having said that, the machinery has coped very well in the two months we have been burning this particular pile. I would add, that I have removed a fair amount of "out of gauge" material from the feeder because the twigs and shards tend not to fall into the auger trough and build up into a birds nest, which if left for long enough would obstruct any chips. If you are on site to sort out problems, then having imperfect chips is ok, an arb chipper, ie without a screen may well produce a better chip with twigs, but has it got enough output to make it worthwhile?
  17. Not being picky, but that would be 3 kilowatt hours Steph, this might be the best customer you ever get, tell him earnestly how much heat you believe you logs would give, what good value they are, compared with oil or electricity and you will have a customer for life (possibly ) With logs, the most valuable part of the equation is the customer
  18. could get a couple of small limbs poked in just to top off the load
  19. a good indicator (of bad news) is to open the throttle quickly with the rad cap off, if it belches out more bubbles, then it looks like the head gasket again. couple of hours should have it sorted !
  20. If you are still stuck with this then give me a call, pm sent
  21. Thanks for thinking of me, I will pm Graham
  22. Mark, thanks for putting me straight, I spoke to him on the phone about doing my chipping said he was about to change, perhaps he was fishing. cheers Rod
  23. Deb Linden Services alledgedly have a big chipper on a Mog, but I think it is a Heizo which will make it side loading, possibly worth a try, they are down on the A28 somewhere near there all the best.
  24. Good point about the Ag Spec machines, you can find construction spec machines a lot cheaper, but usually dont have the engine horsepower, pickup hitch and front services, and tipping pipe at the back! 526 is a great machine
