  1. This is a common thing We find chestnut trees in peoples gardens often by the house- probably planted childrens conkers. You could try repotting into a medium pot and burying in the soil surrounded by sandy compost and mulched. Will make it easier to look after and easier to move in 10 years.
  2. You could say the same for many areas oop north:001_tt2:
  3. I'm sticking with mine It's a copyright thing If you don't like it you know what you can do:biggrin:
  4. I'm thinking if you need an eyewash station then prob best to in vest in good wrap around safety glasses first
  5. Hmm Employer has duty to supply PPE or rather to make PPE freely available was my understanding. Uniform isn't PPE but may be a requirement of working
  6. In the context of helping the tree then yes OK But in the context of the picture and the place of the tree in the picture, imagine how that would look
  7. Burning the bottom of posts is old country way Replaced wrongly IMO by dipping in creosote Replaced probably wrongly by tanalising Maybe the time for burning has come full circle
  8. Live your dream man On the subject of evergreen 80 I have many times put this down and seeded at the same time Lawns come up a treat- don't listen to the old women Also- don't undercut us guys too much You'll discover when you get a bit more experience why we charge what we do:sneaky2: You need tickets/insurance/transport/blah blah so watch out doing it for peanuts
  9. So I have a question Is there more money in kindling than electrical work I always tell youngsters to go down the electrician route if they want megga wonga Am I wrong to do this. I mean you've obviously earned enough to go semi retired at 44 so the money must have been good:001_smile:
  10. It's for cleaning as skyhuck says If your employer provides you with a uniform (logo'd) or otherwise not suitable for wearing outside work then you write to the taxman and mention this. Usually get I think it's about 60 or 100 added to your taxcode. It may be a bit more. May be peanuts but the old adage'look after pennies and pounds look after themselves applies. My staff all do it!
  11. Sometimes in business you have to just get a gut feeling- imagine yourself doing the work and work out how long a 10m section would take. Strimming by a main road would be difficult as stones may fly. Go with gut feeling and adjust your workrate to suite. The rest is lesson learned though you may never want to take on such a job again:biggrin:
  12. I'm jealous:thumbup1: In truth- they don't want time served - they want young keen compliant well trained workforce who accept this culture as normal Oh yes I forgot - preferably cheaper
  13. Go with the flow or get off the bus H&S compliance gets you on tender lists If you are working for joe public then odds are you don't need to bother except if you have an accident that gets reported or someone you work with gets all litigious. Once you start working for the big boys it pays to get compliant I know it's a pain and we are always saying you really just need a ticket for common sense The problem is the government allowed the 'no win, no fee' boys to advertise about 20 years ago and we are now reaping that whirlwind. How many times a week do you get texts asking if you have recently had an accident at work/ no fault. This is what drives all this crap. We had a site where there were forklifts and big lorry movements- Our method statement said it would be best if we worked Saturday as no lorries on site. Company didn't like that because they were worried about security. Just got to remember the customer is always right!!! Sometimes I wish I lived in France:lol:
  14. When you get a chipper you wonder how you coped without
  15. Some kit you can argue is 1 year gear and just treat it like materials. Such as chains/bars/consumables/small hand tools. Least thats how I see it- what would be the point in depreciating a spade over 5 years- just an accounting PITA I think you would have more investment in business if all kit was depreciated over 1 year as you would buy kit to reduce your tax liability and this would mean businesses would have more new kit. But thats the taxman for you:sneaky2:
  16. Never done a crane job so can't comment but The tension oozed through the video- don't you talk to yourself? Next crane job for you I expect you'll be more chilled and enjoy it more. I'm guessing £3500
  17. Our 660 is a good solid saw will run a 36inch bar no problem Keep the chain sharp and you'll have no problems
  18. it's a lawnflite isn't it Underpowered domestic tat Will come unstuck when trying to collect long grass or wet grass Clever idea though of raising the effective axle and grass doesn't have to be lifted so high to be deposited in the box For the money and for domestic use- a bargain
  19. I t'shoe box in't middle of t'road
  20. they love to make things simple:001_smile:
  21. We have lone workers although its switched around so its not just the same person doing it. Sometimes it's good to work alone. Makes the craic better when working as a two. I can't remember the last time a lone worker did any chainsaw work though Probably me about 25 years ago
  22. know Castor well Nice pub next door Plus- Cedar burns a treat and seasons quickly. Also on the plus side You may get more paying work from it to deal with the part of the tree that is still standing I just think he's hoping and could save £500 into the bargain Can't blame him for trying
  23. Have to agree about keeping them sweet. It's not a one off and you may lose a lot of future business if you dig your heels in. Most surveyors are realistic though and just say give the tennant what they want and bung the difference on the next job. The hardest thing to learn is how to deal with the situation keeping pride intact and not falling out with he who giveth you work. We too have had the crap that surrounds taking a overhanging branch back too far.
  24. small 1 squirt bottles from firstaidforless.com You can buy a box of 25 for about £10
