Certainly on for Saturday, can't wait just checking on Google map for directions, when talking about hatfield, do we mean hatfield forest, bishops stortford or hatfield, just south of welwyn garden city?! I'm hoping bishops stortford, closer for me and only a 20ish minute drive to epping, which IS nice...

No idea about mac compatability. I have now had the pt mapper on demo though. I have tried to use AutoCAD, and while I'm sure it is the best most powerful drawing software, it left me intimidated and bewildered! Pt mapper was fairly easy and intuitive to use, and the customer service some of the best I've ever had; at 5pm on a Friday they remotely controlled my computer while on the phone to me and ran me through nearly an hour of questions so I could use it over the weekend. Compared to other cad programs it may be a little limited but it does what I need it to, easily. I'll be purchasing it this coming week, if I were you I would talk your other options through with J England first though. He may have something more suited to your needs and experience with cad etc.

Interesting its so far from the stem, looks a fair sized tree with a hefty lean. Certainly worthy of further inspection if its likely to flatten the house should the roots let go. The brown rotted roots, depending on extent of decay, will have lost some, or maybe lots, of their tensile strength.

Just to be nosey, what's everyone up to over the long weekend? I've had odd jobs about the house today, tree survey on a builder damaged maple tomorrow, and lunch at the inlaws Monday. Oddly looking forward to all of it!

I'm slightly confused (easily done!), is the fungi attached to the ground in the pic, or just found laying loose at the base of the tree?

Chicken of the woods on oak, won't cause die back. It only decays the inner heart wood, so the water conducting vessels nourishing the roots and shoots are unaffected and still working. It sometimes causes failures of live scaffold branches around that height as the holding wood is brown rotted. A kind of natural pollard in oak caused by fungi, allowing a new crown to form lower down on a stout strong hollow bole, full of nutrient rich decayed wood to feed the aging tree

Looking at it I'd have thought £80-100 is fair. I'd have thought up to a fiver per hook, 20 ish for the wood and then a couple hours standing, oiling and fitting hooks. I'd imagine that, especially with matching key hooks, pan hangers, orchid/flower hanging brackets, light switch surrounds etc would sell for good money if you got samples to a posh interior designer or ideal home show type of thing. A mate of mine sells handmade/bespoke house names and numbers in clay with enamel at the ideal home show, around 50-100 quid, and mostly done from existing templates!

Yep, wholesome foods, not reformed 'meat' pumped full of preservatives and flavour enhancers. Just like drinking when thirsty, sleeping when tired and going to the loo when nature calls. It's instinctive, not calorie-rocket science!

Silver birch stump won't regrow, so that's easy. Other stumps may, depending on species. If so, being a.sssi wouldn't EN specify what, if any, stump treatment? A small pile of woodchip a foot deep might be enough, or carefully grinding?

It's all a bit vague, but I did look into this recently. As far I could tell from the .gov site (which is a nightmare) if tree work is in best arb practice, ie deadwooding, thinning, felling for safety etc you're clear. Fencing solely for tree protection, as per the TPP, is also exempt. Felling/pruning for access or building, or fencing which will be part of the completed development, is included. Hope this helps...
