  1. Cheers for the replies guys. Guess he likes to play TO then
  2. Very impressive effort, did you bust them off with a winch first? And is that a Willans harness?! Must be a very old picture
  3. Looks like its dealing with it well. There aren't a great deal of London planes around me, and I've felled relatively few medium or large ones; none with any basal decay. Is it an association you come across often? Any dissections? Thoughts on speed and spread of decay? Any pics?
  4. Wow, art in its own right. Try emulating that coronet cut style!
  5. My bro in law applied last week for a call centre job and was told just 48hrs after the job being advertised over 500 people had applied online alone! Wow
  6. Cupressus sp. Glabra maybe? Failing that, hornbeam...
  7. You may well upset your client, but the only option is to alert the local tree officer. The ball is then in his/her court as to whether it is expedient in the interests of public amenity to serve a TPO, which would obviously give them protection from felling. It's a nasty situation many find themselves in, whether as a tree surgeon asked to quote or as consultant asked if there is anything to stop them. Do what you feel is right but be aware if 2 + 2 is put together you may be blamed. Are the trees worth it? Is the client worth it? People employing these tactics may well be unpleasant to work for...
  8. Some nice images. I have a real fondness for the jelly ear, not sure why. Perhaps it reminds me of my childhood playing in the woods, it certainly isn't the taste!
  9. Hi, all. My nearest competitor offers a 'tree officer support' service, this is a term I have not come across before and no idea what it is. Am I being dim/missing the obvious here? Any thoughts?
  10. Have a look at some tree branches which are still attached to the trunk, you'll notice on some trees there is a ridge of congested bark where the top of the branch meets the trunk. Simply put this is where the trees 'fibres' are diverted around the branch, hence 'branch bark ridge' (bbr). It is more noticeable on some trees or species (such as ash, or birch) than others, and it is completely normal. As a side note tree surgeons will use it as a guide when making a correctly positioned pruning cut, which should leave the bbr intact.
  11. Shall we aim for 9/9:30? If that's ok with Tony of course...
  12. Pfft. Amateurs... It's clearly Leylandii, all conifers are. Innit.
  13. So this trip, open to all I'm guessing? What time do you want to meet there, I don't reckon I can get there before 9, but if others want to arrive earlier I'm sure I could find you.
  14. Mental graf! Someone has some serious skills there
  15. Not the clearest of pics, but sure that's an old pruning wound, the 'ring' around it is new growth since the cut was made. The tree will eventually seal off the wound providing, hopefully, a continuity of strength as the wood behind the pruning cut decays.
  16. Yeah I hear it's ok really should drag my arse down there, it looks amazing. So how about Sat 31st for Hatfield? All in favour say 'ay'..
  17. Sat 31 or Sun 1 is fine with me, Tony? If not the Sat after? Clumber looks a bit too far for me, especially with Staverton being closer and still unexplored by me!
  18. Chin up Matt, I don't think it was meant like that. With the exception of one or two very clever myco-fanatics, everyone is playing catch up when it comes to fungi on trees and how it all works. We never stop learning if we don't want to. Keep up the good work mate
  19. A quick search of the 'chives and it looks like this is our man. Better wait to see when he is free. The bank holiday weekend, or before or after is fine with me
  20. Last two weekends free at the moment, some advance notice would be good, they soon get filled!w
  21. Foray sounds good, there was talk of hatfield in another thread I think? Maybe an hours drive for me, and I've never even been! Weekends are best if its ok with you and whoever it was that mentioned it originally...
  22. That's all good and well, but last time I smelt iodine was in school! My olfactory memory is lacking
