Looks like Hericium cirrhatum (not sure that's spelled correctly, tiered tooth), a red data list species I think, along with the other two Hericiums. Nice find, and edible, although you really shouldn't!

Can't remember whose it is, but; Don't start an argument with idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Seen it on J regia, relatively common round my way. Tends to end in branch tear-outs and hollows after a while in the bigger trees. Not really seen it much on younger trees though.

Hmmm, something a little unexpected perhaps? Looks the wrong shape for resi, maybe a pfeifferi. I can't see a lateral attachment to the trunk, could it even be a sneaky well dusted lucidum?
