  1. Does anyone here know how to bid for timber from the forestry commission or would anyone wish to share some lots with me? I do have access to some cash but no experience of buying this way. I have already registered to bid. Best partner would be someone with the means of moving the wood so we could sell on to others here at a fair price. I am based near Burton on Trent Staffs
  2. Small trailer behind the quad and put a pole through the roll of weed suppressing material, Fasten it under the quad with the tyres of the trailer on the material. Put the plants and some wood mulch in the trailer. As you move the material rolls out. Plant through and enough wood chip to hold it in place. Works a treat. Two men did 250 m in 3 days!
  3. oldish novice climber who needs to see if he could get into a high seat to shoot a few red deer. Reason for climbing skills is due to being paraplegic. I live near Burton. Could I tag along and pick your brains?
  4. cut them back hard. Plant the roots and all the cuttings too. Even more laurels
  5. It might be easier to get it round baled without the net and tip in a corner would save all the raking. Shouldn't cost that much if you can find a couple of dryish days and a friendly farmer. Let him mow it too, 10' mower with plenty of horsepower instead of you thrashing your little tractor for ages. Horses for courses?
  6. Noticed his next thing is an axe licence. No problems I can sell him mine:001_tt2:
  7. If you don't pay a good man well you can expect him to go elsewhere or set up on his own. Grass cutters are not the same as good mower men, just take a look at the lines and spilt grass cuttings. When I worked for myself mowing I got lots of work by people looking over the fence. The stripes in a lawn will last until the next mowing. How long is the sawdust on the drive?
  8. A F Hill and sons near Redditch
  9. My Dad was charged £700 for a simple days gardening. Local police got involved. Cheque was stopped and if the police had found them they said they could have charged them with fraud. Get the police involved even if only to scare him to stop ripping of elderly parisheners
  10. I have been made redundant 3 times and had a life changing accident nearly 10 years ago. Never been out of work though and never had to claim any dole or job seekers. Guess I am lucky or did the fact that I have always found work when it didn't find me help. Even now aged over 55 and paralysed chest down I have 2 jobs. Drive 400-500 miles each week and look after a couple of gardens in my village. To fill my spare time I grow my own veg at home. Oh and I have 2 other gardens I grow veg in. Stop blaming governments or immigrants for lack of work. Most people that want work would be happy to work for benefits for a few months between jobs. Unfortunately some that most need the help don't get it cuz slip through the net and others know how to work the system.
  11. look round farm sales for Johnson potato digger. Soil falls through and stones (potatoes) comes over the back
  12. Mow, feed , mow, feed, mow etc. grass enjoys being cut so long as you only take 1/3 of length off. There are sprays that can be used on young grass but don't use things from garden centres on grass this young. If you do as above then leave the spraying till next year. Don't use summer feeds after end of August but use autumn feeds after that
  13. If you think your pricing is right then stick to your guns but always do a great job. That way you will get the costumers that will pay the right price and you will get the best referrals. Leave the cheap jobs to those who like to under cut you and let them work for nothing and cut corners. If you lose too many jobs then maybe you will need to review pricing and if you get every job you quote for then you are too cheap!
  14. would love some at that price to net and resell but he may be just a little too far. If you don't mind replying here or text his number to 07908809108
  15. Very few trees and lots of bracken. I agree with the comments i.e. what is it worth to you. and I do have some ideas of adding value but need to check out if any restrictions on the use of the land too. Thanks for all that have added comments
  16. how much is unimproved woodland worth these days? 5.7 acres
  17. I mow my grass every 2-3 days and never remove the clippings. mower It is still green but couple of spots showing stress. I am also on very sandy soil The clippings feed and help prevent moisture loss and disappear into the lawn almost instantly. Having said all that I haven't cut for 10 days now
  18. It also depends how many and how large the lawns are.
  19. pigeon and rabbit with shotgun and .22lr, managed 80 strong sika herd until last November. Really miss that. Trying to find new ground when in wheelchair is not easy
  20. price same level as competitors and do a better job so get good referals
  21. if you want wild flowers to grow in your meadow it will mean no mowing until after mid July to allow the wild flowers to seed. Also you should remove the clippings and not mulch as this will improve the fertility which is not good for the wild flowers as it allows the grass to out compete them. The same goes for any added fert
  22. Do a ph test as just throwing nitrogen at it will be a waste of time if the ph is way out. Other than that try ferrous sulphate and nitrogen based fert and spray for the weeds( probably easiest if you know a farmer that is already spraying grassland. Then mow as often as you have time and leave it as long as you can live with. Try to never cut more than 1/3 of the length and mulch so the grass clippings feed back.
  23. Allen sythe would be a good option?
