  1. As per Gensetsteve, keep your batteries fresh. My meter had the battery warning light on for a few weeks. I measured some 15 inch logs I split and stacked in May and it read 42% which I knew was rubbish as a month ago they were averaging 16 to 20%. Next day I put some new batteries in and it's back to reading 16%.
  2. Nice Unimog video [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRtDPrZZj20]Mercedes-Benz UniMog: Crushin' It! - Ignition Episode 59 - YouTube[/ame]
  3. Winch on ebay looks useful 2006 PIPE/ CABLE HYDRAULIC WINCH, TOWING, LOG SURGEON | eBay
  4. I bought my 07 Ranger with 27,000 miles on the clock just over two years ago and have now done 63,000. In that time apart from normal servicing it has only required one UJ on the propshaft. Performance wise it is very easy to drive, a good motorway cruiser, competent off road and hauls a load of logs day in day out without complaint. You could sat I'm a fan!!! And there are more available and cheaper than over priced Hiluxes.
  5. https://www.engineeringagencies.co.uk/product.php/1422/0/helly_hansen_70260_narvik_jacket I've been looking for Carhartt recently and came across this company - prices are cheaper than most.
  6. There are two on ebay at the moment - just search hilux king cab. One of the things that put me off the Toyota was the fact the smaller door does not open which I would find really restrictive. I went for a Ranger Super cab and it is extremely convenient being able to open the smaller door to give unimpeded access to the area behind the seats.
  7. Speak to Jim at Caledonian Forestry. I bought mine 3 years ago and they went up in price not long after to about £9000 I think.
  8. Got birch and mixed hardwood loads available. PM sent
  9. Felixes bill just got larger - now he needs not just a trailer but also a Chinook!!
  10. Yeah, I have a number of customers who have bought kiln dried off one of my competitors and they have said it burns way too fast and is expensive. A lot of them store logs outside as well so surely kiln dried timber would start to take moisture back in.
  11. Unfortunately, it is probably already broken up to be sold on as parts. When will it stop??? When Land Rover fit decent door handles and locks!
  12. That's interesting. I looked in to this last year. I load loose logs I have cut in to the back of the pick up which equates to about 1.1 cubic metres loose. I know this translates to 0.7 of a cubic metre when stacked as I measured a customers log store when I have stacked it. I was therefore working on the principle that a stacked 2 cubic metre crate should give just shy of 3 loose pick up loads. However, it does depend on the dimensions of their logs. This would be born out by the fact one company told me on average there are 1500 logs in the 2cubic metre stacked crate which I thought would give four pick up loads as I know there is 350 logs approx per load. But if you only get 2.2 loose cubic metres out of the crate it shows that the dimensions of their logs means it takes more logs to fill the pick up. At £165 plus vat per crate - total £198 if you buy 28 crates - that gives you a cost of £99 per cubic metre. If you add your own handling and delivery costs on top of that I would have thought you would have to be charging minimum of £130 delivered. I do not think my customers would be prepared to pay this price as I currently charge £85 for a loose cubic metre. My brains hurting now, must be wine o'clock surely!!!
  13. A guy I know sells it for £115 per cubic metre dumpy bag plus a fiver delivery and a fiver for the bag. Premium Woods offer is for a stacked crate so I would have thought out of a 2 cubic metre stacked crate you should get just short of three loose pick up loads - but I've yet to try it to prove my theory!!
  14. Yeah, been registered with TPS for about 12 years.
  15. In the last few weeks I have received calls from: 1) A guy saying he was working with Google and could get me listed on the top five searches when people searched for firewood in .... I had the same call last year, could have been the same guy even as they both had a strong scouse accent and when you ask them to email the info, he gets quite shirty and says he cannot do that as the opportunity is for today only and he will just ring the next person on his list - which I told him to do. This year when I told him it was a scam he get very aggressive and told me to get my facts straight before he slammed the phone down!! 2) A few days later, a nicey nicey guy asking for me, states he is from the Crime Prevention Team and there's nothing to worry about, but would I like to advertise in a magazine they are putting together. I told him I had a similar call last year and passed the details to a policeman customer of mine who confirmed it was a scam and .... he hung up! Not to put a good man down, he only rang the week after, he's using the name Kevin and I said I'll tell you what I told you last week, it's a sca.....damned if he didn't hang up again! 3) And then just this afternoon I receive a call on the landline from somebody claiming to be working with Microsoft. She had a very Asian accent and told me my computer was running very slow (which it has been) but she could help me sort it out. I asked her how I could be sure she was genuine and she replied Microsoft get sent messages about peoples computers and they cannot deal with them all so they have other companies who assist. She asked me to switch the computer on and search msconfig in the run box which brought up programmes that were running or stopped. She then said she would have to pass me to her colleague Chrystal who was more qualified. Chrystal, also very very Asian, said she would take control of my pc. Again I asked for clarity and got the blurb about millions of microsoft users blah blah so I asked for their company name and telephone number so I could contact them - Smart Support Guys is their name and the number was 0207 1939836. I googled the number and it appears on the forums about scam numbers and apparently they go so far and then ask for money! 4) I don't think this one is a scam but every week I have a message on the landline about getting a bloomin' boiler replaced and states press 2 to speak to someone but that does not work. I just want them to stop ringing!!!!! As a self employed person I have enough to deal with without all these hoax calls. Okay, Victor Meldrew closing down now! Where's the asprin??
  16. There are a lot of people who like the Fiskars range and they are on this site at good prices: Product Search - My Tool Shed Personally I have the Gransfors large splitting maul and love it, the quality is superb.
  17. Having just visited relatives in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island and done a bit travelling around, I would go for BC - it's a fantastic place and has some huge trees! Evo - my cousin lives in Nanaimo and drives for Island Timberland.

    Rnli

Saw this on Monday and thought of you. Apparently it is the biggest boat the RNLI have and they come to Amble in Northumberland because it has one of the few cranes capable of lifting a 60 ton boat out of the water. My uncle who lives nearby and has lots of boaty friends reckons they change the props evry year at a cost of £30k a time!!
  20. Why spend £12k on something that will not do the job. Same money would get you a much more suitable truck
  21. No, Rangers are now built by Ford in South Africa; hence their very American look as opposed to the previous versions. They do come out tops in comparison tests but it would appear to be a very close run competition with the VW Amarok and the Amarok is more readily available. I have an 07 Ranger Super Cab and love it but the only Super Cab versions I have seen have been Northumbria Water versions so there ain't many around.
  22. Been a glorious day in north east, makes it such a pleasure driving round delivering firewood in lovely sunshine with fab views.
  23. Just to update this thread - Kaspersky is still available free from Barclays. I had been using my laptop and following the links from the Barclays home page once logged in to online banking. I have just come off the phone to the online help desk and there is a problem if the browser you use is Internet Explorer so I logged on to the desk top and using Google Chrome followed the ladys instructions and got the new activation code via email. Input it and I am now protected until September next year free of charge. Result!!!
  24. Same deal available on Amazon for Kaspersky, have you noticed your computer running slower Rob? I know there are free ones out there but they don't seem to do everything, by the sound of it most of you run two systems together.
