  1. There are two sides to this coin Ed, aren't there? I worked for a big company that put me through lots of tickets. They did this so I could do the work they needed doing. I in return did that work to the best of my abilities. So I think these things balance out.
  2. Give it time mate! It's ten o'clock on a Friday night!
  3. I ain't got any money left Jon!, I'm scrimping and scrapping to save enough money to come down to your place for the Christmas cider pilgrimage.
  4. This is so true! I've got a very good friend that WAS in a very good job, until he got random tested. Turned out he liked a smoke, on the weekend. Bit harsh I think. He'd worked his way off the tools into a managerial position, only to be told to clear his desk.
  5. Should have known you would say that. Fatty
  6. And me! The phone gets chucked in the door pocket of the van, and gets looked at, as and when.
  7. I was speaking to Pat Ferret on the phone last week. Some one backed off a driveway in to his motor. The lady that did it said something like.....I can't see out of the driveway, so I just back out and hope nothing is coming.
  8. No it's not! But this was a once a year event that (if what the pupils have wrote about), was agreed by the head teacher. Why change things later In the day?
  9. ^^^This. Don't take the piss if ya can't take it ya self.
  10. Wouldn't it be nice though!......when I buy pumps, the most I can get off list price is 30%........and that's not all the time.
  11. Second class transport beats first class walking, every time!
  12. Star Wars is crap! I can remember one of my older brothers taking me to see the first one in 1977. I fell asleep half way through it! Never watched it since.
  13. Do any of you lads that do landscaping/drainage work ever install pumping stations? Wether they are for surface water or foul water. I've just made two of these for a local fella that was putting up a log cabin that is going to be used as an office in someone's garden. The cabin will have a toilet and sink in it. The problem they had was not having the fall to get on to the gravity drain/sewer. This was easily solved by sinking a small tank in the ground with a pump in it to pump the waste water up to the house drains. I was just wondering if there is any interest in these.
  14. If what you are saying is right Jon, a climber can get more money than a sparky and not have as much kit on the job. And I take it when you say a climber this is someone that comes in does the job then goes home. Not the person that got the job in the first place.
  15. You never mentioned a chipper for the climber you quoted. How much would climbing kit and saws cost to go and do a days work for a climber? Labour only. I bet it's not three to four grand.
  16. I think you are looking at this with blinkers on. Take a sparky for example. He will have to run a van, may have three or four different test meters on that van that will cost well over a grand, enough hand tools to cover another grand. So that's 2k worth of kit, this is with out all the cable, fittings. Probably another grands worth of power tools. All this for £120 to £160 a day. When you look at it this way would you say there was much difference between a sparky and a climber on the same money?
  17. But are they finding and quoting for the work?
  18. I'm talking about self employed lads!
  19. I'm not sure that the trades you speak of are getting consistently high rates. I have mates that are joiners, sparkys and plumbers. The going rate around these parts for these trades are between £120 and £160 a day. So on an eight hour day they are getting between £15 and £20 an hour. No great shakes For a tradesman. Imo.
  20. I have to disagree on this one Dan. When I worked for the local water authority I was "trained" in pa1, pa6 and brush cutter use. None of which I ever used whilst working for them. If I had have been sent out to do any of the tasks that needed these skills I would have filled out a RA "thinking" that I knew what I was doing, because I'm trained!.....The bit that gets missed on training courses is common sense.
  21. Fair play. Should read more like, turn up with grinder, if they pay for the tree work grind stump a run.
  22. Me also, I'd never get out of bed before 9am if I had the money. Back to the op. I've had this sort of thing more than once, people nod their heads and say yes even when they don't have a clue what you are talking about, then they try and tell you what YOU said to them. My old mum is very frail with Alzheimer's. Last Friday my brother got a call from the care home manager saying that she thought it was time mum went on to a more nursing based "ward", my brother said he would like to discuss this with her and mums doctor before any changes were made. Brother turns up to visit mum on Monday and she has been moved. When my brother confronted the manager she said we spoke about it on Friday. Yes they did talk about mum but nothing was agreed. Manager tried to argue the point, until my brother pointed out that all phone calls at his business are recorded. People just don't listen. Then when things don't go has they thought they get shirty. Grind the stump next time you are passing, grab ya money and don't work for people that don't listen to what ya say.
