You don't need to leave them until after the first frost (I just prefer to). Pick them and stick them in the freezer.

I've never bought a top handle, but I have bought quite a few saws over the years!......I would dare bet, if I walked into more than one local dealer's around here on Monday I would walk out with a top handle.
