So they can give it to the banks, or the banks won't lend and your house will be worth less than the mortgage.
  2. My trees weren't big enough to mill. I used them green and all seems well. I was worried that the daub would crack, but it hasn't. I've just built a reciprocal roof using 5-6" poles - really quick, loads of fun. As tommer says, it's a strength issue with the speed of growth.
  3. I've got a small plantation of Norway Spruce and have built a round pole frame using it. As far as I'm aware if it's grown in this country it's no good for construction as it grows too fast and the rings are too far apart. It's incredibly light when dry and tends to crack. I did my frame with loose tenons of oak and oak pegs, wattle and daub panels.
  4. I just smoke a splif.
  5. Probably. Some say it's the deskilling of society. Dole queues full of media studies graduates....
  6. His own country is in a mess and dragging the rest of the world down with it. I reckon he should shut up.
  7. You could take the spark plug out.
  8. I dropped mine while it was spinning. Took a bunch of the pins off:thumbdown: still works ok though.
  9. Yes, but they ain't cheap. I'll PM you.
  10. Untreated. A small one like that is £55. It's about two hours work, less if the oak is knot free.
  11. This is the most popular bench I make. No milling required, just a few splitting wedges and froe and drawknife.
  12. Yeah right, reckon it would end up in the chipper myself.
  13. Good post. I've taken green oak indoors, benches, beams, etc. I find the splitting is quite harsh to start with but as it drys through the cracks shrink up again.
  14. Too kind. Thanks!
  15. Thanks! Pegs are made from seasoned oak shaped with my penknife.
  16. Made something else
  17. I'm paying £2 for "beam oak". However, this stuff is mostly less than 24" and bent, so pretty wasteful. But for cleaving, which is mainly what I do, it works fine.
  18. So Tom, can you save me a bob or two?

  20. Thats £175 a cubic meter!
  21. Cheers!
  22. Tom who?
  23. They're horrible to work with, add a surcharge for scratches.
  24. I pay £60 - £70 per cubic meter of heartwood at the roadside for >24" DBH.
