  1. This seems to ring a bell
  2. Just ordered one of these
  3. Treebustas were brilliant - bomb proof. Many years back Entec claimed that the only Treebusta known to be out of action was one that had ben dropped from a crane. All others were still in use! The new design came in, which was worse and the retail price went up a grand! I still have the original invoice for my old treebusta somewhere - it was under £3k. I guess TW wanted to increase their profits???
  4. Vorsprung durch Bob! I don't suppose that spelling is right though.
  5. Once I had the attention of everyone on the planet (I'm assuming here that ALL religions would recognise me in the way they expect me to appear - athiests would see me as simply as a list of common sense ideals)- I would ask that they all make just two tiny amendments to their interpretation of what I expect .... 1. Do not be so arrogant to assume that how YOU see me is the ONLY option. ALL other religions see me differently, and you know what.... that is OK. You no longer have to despise those with different views or try to convert them. You are all right to perceive me as you do (AND SO IS EVERYBODY ELSE). 2. You, as a species, are part of the earth, you don't own it. Leave it as you you would wish to find it.
  6. You've lost some weight Bob. Well fit. Once you are in front nobody will be able to get past. Best not to do a triathlon though, you might get harpooned during the swim.

Like you say, still a bloody good day by any measure.

Sad, pedantic anorak man says 'But you didn't really EARN the money that day - unless you fully processed all the logs that day prior to delivering them. I'm not trying to be a smart arse, just a business observation. I'll get my coat.
  9. This thread should be written up as a book of inspiration. Mr Fox - you are a fine example of positivityness
  10. Better ask Steve how that happened. On November 5th last year I had only 2 posts????? Now I've got 2.4k ? I guess if I like something I must be something to do with the supply company. Most people on here work for Stihl or Husqvarna.
  11. 1. Ian C is right. The rhino teeth have become more expensive - but they can be re-sharpened several times if you don't let them get too rounded. We use a diamond wheel for sharpening, expensive but faster, no green dust and long lasting (there's another thread somewhere with all the details). No doubt some cheap Chinese alternatives will appear at some point. 2. WE use old knackered multi-tips on the inner-most pockets as 'cleaners' so they cost nothing. 3. The bigger rhinos are more aggressive and it depends on your machine's power. On a 25ish HP machine the smaller ones are just fine - we don't buy the bigger ones now. It is worth enquiring to see if you can get a deal anywhere, but overall the performance and resharpenability (?) make it a no brainer. Suits me cos I got no brain.
  12. If the earth was flat it would be dark or light everywhere at the same time. How can you explain 24 hours + of sunlight via a long-haul flight? It's hardly even worth wasting time over. We might find Vespasian dead now he's onto Putin - should've kept quiet mate.
  13. Not being a hornbeam makes this one difficult. If your colours are a bit dark in the photo I'd say it could be a griselinea.

    Look out!

Just seen on the BBC news that the Police are clamping down (and going to test at every opportunity) drivers' eyesight. If you fail the test your license may be revoked. Us old timers better make sure we are specced up or got the contacts in.
  15. Why are you launching firework rockets from the graves?
  16. Absolutely, apart from the rubbish payload (and weight distribution) if you need to be able to carry more than 3 guys then the work they should be producing would need more than a 3.5 tonner. End of.
  17. We all prefer the lightness, quiet and 'spare hand' aspect of the silky, but with the advent of the MS150 and other similar offerings the weight is not so much of an issue and the noise levels seem lower. The other thing is cost. I recon after a couple of hard days pruning with a silky the blade is definitely losing its edge. I used to keep my old silky blades (god only knows why) till one day I counted over 40 laying around (that was about a years worth). Multiply that up by £20 something plus VAT ! We just use them for really awkward 'white knuckle' position cuts now.
  18. They paid you more money because you heard them talking amongst themselves?
  19. Let us know how you get on. I've wondered about the insurance get-out on this, ie If you use a scanner but hit something, will the insurers argue that you couldn't have scanned properly. It really seems we need to identify EVERYTHING down there all the time, otherwise we are screwed. What happened when you hit the gas supply?
  20. Do a days training first, then you will know what you need. If you use one without the knowledge you will just keep finding 'something to avoid' You need to know what the thing is telling you. I think you can get some that tell you how deep the object is, which is very handy. Like all things in life, the better ones cost a lot more. There are youtube videos but they are a bit vague. I've watched a builder friend use one and he is in a different league. Get trained. If you blow up a gas main because you tested the ground with something you picked up off ebay for £200 and had no training I suspect the judge might side with the gas company (and the homeless customer).
  21. I've not read this entire post but IIRC correctly a couple of points that would 'help' prove someone is a subbie and not an employee are..... They work for OTHER companies (or their own contracts) as well as you. They use their own tools- if appropriate - climbers would have own chainsaws. They meet you on site - not regularly at your yard. They invoice you for each 'contract' (part day, day, days). They do their own accounts. They would typically have an ad-hoc schedule, not for example, the three days he's not at college. They will probably have their own insurance, though your policy should cover them while they work for you. They can be paid regularly (weekly. monthly, whatever). Things may have changed a bit, but the tax man will want to see that a subbie is the sort of creature we all know/think he should reasonably be.
  22. There must be a scum forum where people grunt messages about how chuffed they are to receive benefits and how pleased they are that their children have been excluded from school etc. They must have a joke section about all the morons who get up and go to work so THEY can go to the bookies all day and buy scratchcards and a pizza on the way home. I suspect we are the pinnacle of hilarity - work really hard all day, try to keep all the kit secure, end up with just enough to survive. Having said that, I'd rather be a proud pauper than a scumbag pauper.
  23. I don't think he mentioned pearls, did he???
  24. If Steve's offer doesn't cover it there's a guy in Lancing who is really good. John Harraway. He's done demos for the Arb Assn SE group in the past.
  25. If it's holding up a house sale I'm sure what is best for the tree will not even be on the priority list, let alone near the top. Maybe worth finding out exactly what the prospective buyers are expecting.
