  1. I put an advert in the local paper, made the mistake of putting "lowest rates in beds, bucks, herts". i was inundated with asian gentlemen,no matter what price i quoted they still wanted it done cheaper. I suppose the only way with these asian gentlemen is to put an extra £100 on the job and let them knock you down by £50.
  2. When i was on my chainsaw course in 1995, the instructor pointed out the dangers of chipped laurel and quoted a couple of instances when children had been overcome by the cyanide fumes and died. So i just had to try it for myself, and within a couple of minutes of standing in a fresh load or chippings i felt very faint. maybe it is only certain types or the fact i had 10 pints of london pride the night before. Must say i have never heard of any deaths myself.
  3. As farmer tom says, it contains cyanide, you should never chip laurel as it gives off a cyanide gas, try standing in a pile of it and see what happens,it has to be fresh. Dont do it alone!
  4. Up yours mr. health & safety. Me in 1987

    Gutted.

Well said that man, im sure every decent hard working man/women feels the same, gladly these inbred benefit scrounging scum are far outnumbered by decent people.
  6. That could well be the reason, as olives are not a natural english tree , but have done well in this country because of our mild winters, they have flourished. Then all of a sudden minus 9 comes along, at least i am going to find out what it burns like. The guys given up with foreign trees and want to replace it with a willow, try and kill that mother nature.
  7. Planted this olive tree 5 years ago. Looked healthy the last 4 years, this year it has obviously died. I know its been a dry year but that surely that shouldnt be the reason , its planted next to a pond as well. Seems to be growth around the base. Any ideas?
  8. Mine took 2 days, so if you aint recieved a summons within a week you aint been caught.
  9. You seem very keen mate, when youve finished yours you can do mine, i wont charge you.
  10. sorry about the multiple quotes, laptops playing up.
  11. Now,dont be so hasty , £20 a ton ? i reckon he is ripping you off. My advice, have nothing to do with him. Just out of interest, whats his name, address & telephone number. Seriously, buy as much as you can afford at that price.

  14. "DITTO" works every time, replace the bolts every time though, they get chewed up a bit .
  15. Go to your local council offices and find out what you can and cannot do, every council has different rules and regs. It may be an idea not to mention exactly where your land is, especially if you are burning brushwood etc. If your happy with what they say you can do it is very important to get this in writing.
  16. Thanks lads, as usual a professional and useful feedback. Seems to me that these 1 man augers are only fit for easy digging soil, i may as well stick to my grafter, at least when my back finally breaks i can cut the spade off and use it as a walking stick. Thanks 18 stonner but i work on my own, 2 mans no good to me.DENT thanks for the info, very interested, depending on price
  17. My back cant take much more post hole digging, can anyone recommend a good petrol one man hole borer? Not interested in kanga kids or mini digger/auger as they have limited use.Tried a 2 man stihl years ago and was far from impressed.
  18. Couldnt agree more, keep them well serviced and they go on forever, theres not really a lot to go wrong, no electric windows, air con etc , they are just a basic workhorse.
  19. I may be wrong (i usually am). softwood bears a cone, hardwoods dont. cant be that simple.
  20. I am on my 5th hilux since 1990, apart from tyres, exhaust, brakes i have only replaced 1 radiator & 3 fog light switches on all 5. They do 28-32mpg, i can cruise at 75mph all day. i usually take mine up to 260,000 miles before replacing it. The only gripe i have about the hilux is its like driving a brick, even the smallest pothole rattles your false teeth, cant have everything i guess.
  21. If your getting 75% of your quoted work your on the right road. 2 reasons why you wont get the other 25% 1. you are dearer than they expected . 2. they dont like you, if someone turned up at your door looking like worzel gummidge would you want them on your property? What would the neighbours think? etc Dont forget when you quote for work , you wont be the only one looking at the same work, they maybe well dressed in a decent car and look very professional , you have to be the same. GOOD LUCK ENGLAND FOR SUNDAY!!!!!
  22. My small size bottles are kept in my shed ,approx 20m from my back door, boc never ask where or how i keep them when i renew the rental every year.
  23. I put about 10 copper nails into the trunk of a conifer 12 years ago, the tree is still there as fit as cheryl cole, sorry tweedy. So in my experience it is an old wives tale.
  24. Cheapest way is surely to just clip their wings.
  25. Franks bang on with his comment. If you want a saw for diy or pottering around the garden then the saw you have would be fine. But if you are going to use it every day then stick to stihl/husky, think of all the days you will miss when your saw fails to start.
