  1. I should think 90% of these types of burglaries are down to pykies, they steal from one part of the country and ship to another part to sell off. They will have buyers ready. I was offered a load of makita drills, and was told that they can get me anything i want, just phone them and order it, the only thing they dont touch are large plant because most of them have trackers. BASTARDS!!!!
  2. He also quotes a hilux as 2 square metres. Unless ive got my sums wrong, my single cab hilux works out as 1.2 square metres. Maybe he is using greedy boards.
  3. Get the whole lot, put it somewhere dry until the bark falls off and you will have the best firewood money can buy, until this stage it is very stringy and near impossible to split with a maul. Even with a splitter i have to put another lump of wood underneath it so the blade goes through the whole log, When it is well seasoned it splits great.
  4. My 044 has a 20 inch bar, would it run a 30 inch and still maintain the same amount of power? May be a stupid question, (depends on type of wood etc) but i was wondering if anyone had this experience.
  5. Take this mans advice. You may wish you had.
  6. I have put tons of conifer/softwood on the bonfire over the years. Never again , it is being mixed in with the hardwood from now on. As the going says "you live and learn"
  7. If your machine is sitting idle and it is returned unbroken, then great you have made £300. On the other hand any breakdowns could cost you more than what you hired it out for. I have a mate that i would lend anything to. because i know that if he broke it , he would either repair it or pay to have it repaired. So you have to ask yourself , would he?
  8. This is the deal i have. No catch. You get a sim card and put it in your existing pay as you go phone. great value
  9. Cheers, very helpful. I wonder how many people will write this down.
  10. A police seargent i know said to me , if you ever catch a pykie on his own on your land kill him and dispose of the body, because when any of these people are reported missing they dont bother looking for them. Still dont know if he was serious.
  11. Think about it though, you would pay good money in a gym to use a similar machine. Think i will stick to one with an engine though.
  12. In the year 2006 my barn was broken into a total of 4 times , every time i called the police, answer was "we dont come out to shed breakins". When my mate phoned the police to report a transit pick up stuck in his field after it had dumped a load of crap, they said "nothing we can do as it is private property" when he replied he was going to get his jcb and smash it to bits they threatened to arrest him.
  13. great job. These scum are not cowboys or contractors, the word is pykies or diddicoies. I gave up patio/drive laying years ago, simply because you cannot compete against these people, i used to price to dig out 8 inches to give a decent base for a drive, they price for 2 if your lucky. I price for a couple of skips, they price to dump it in a field gateway. No offence to genuine gypsies.
  14. If it is ash, then thats not to bad. I quote: if it is ash
  15. Unless i got my maths wrong , my hilux (single cab) works out at 1.2 cubic metre
  16. Very interested , depending on price
  17. Biggest problem i have selling logs is that there are so many people changing to logs but have never lit a fire in their lives. 2 examples: one can get his logburner to burn green willow the other will only have bone dry logs (he has a moisture meter). To show him how good his moisture meter is , i put it on a bunch of matches, the matches came up as wet.
  18. I sold 2 loads of seasoned conifer today and i have 3 more for this week. Each one i dropped off a net of logs for them to try free of charge before they bought any, and the customer was more than happy, commenting on the lovely aroma. I cant do any more than that. Of course your right it burns quicker with less heat, but the customer is happy and that is the main thing.
  19. As far as i know softwood comes only from any tree that bears a cone as its fruit, which strangely makes poplar&willow as hardwoods.
  20. I let the customer try it first, hes very happy with it, takes me the same amount of time to process it. why should i reduce the price? At least i am not conning people, they know what they are getting and if they dont like it , they wont buy it. A tree surgery firm near me are selling green (2 weeks cut) willow as seasoned hardwood. I wonder if they are giving the customers a free sample before they buy? I always thought it was crap wood until now.
  21. I have completely run out of seasoned hardwood logs. I have a few ton of conifer that has been lying about for about 18 months waiting to be burned with the brushwood. Customer calls and i say i only have conifer, i will give you a net free, if it is any good i will do you a load. customer rings back and is more than happy with it, and it leaves a lovely aroma around the house. This was on an open fire , he said it didnt spit either.
  22. Mines a single cab, you are right, i shall measure the bed and sell it as volume from now on. Dont really fancy a fine of a couple of grand. It does help getting opinions from people who know what they are talking about. Cheers
  23. I would agree with you, i advertise mine as a 1 ton pick up load, not 1 ton load of logs. Trouble is that both wordings make people think that they are going to get 1 ton of logs. I would just act ignorant if they pulled me.
  24. Be careful how you advertise your logs: i know someone who was advertising his as a 1 ton load and was delivering it in a 1 ton pickup. Trading standards got him as it was actually just over half a ton. He was fined £2500.
  25. Spot on my old son, anyone who says elm is no good for firewood is trying to burn it to early, before its seasoned. You know when it is properly seasoned because it "snaps" in two when split. If it is unseasoned it is the stringiest wood you will ever split.
