  1. Feel free mate . Wish I'd taken them with something a bit better than my blackberry now lol
  2. Got it done & dusted by 2-2.30 with time to fit in another couple of jobs Apparently it went over at 5am with one hell of a bang. By the look of the failure point it wouldn't have gone over slowly.
  3. Hey Steve, how you doing? It's Dan BTW lol Sorry if I was chatting much s*!t at the Capel show, few too many ciders
  4. As promised, a few pics of our diseased tree.
  5. Veners? That you Steve?
  6. I'll get some pics tomorrow, suspect I won't be the only one either. Insurance companies may well be sniffing around too. It's in the Hoddesdon/Broxbourne end of the Lea valley but strangely the tree isn't their property. That strip of land entering the park is privately owned.
  7. This went over last night. The people in the house next to it were very lucky. It landed square on top of their garage, also hitting the roof of the bedroom but only the corner. This is only half of the horse chestnut that was diagnosed with ganoderma last autumn, the other half is still standing.........just.
  8. We're not in your neck of the woods mate. Cornwall & Hertfordshire are very different from Northern Ireland. I respect the job they do there but where I am they don't seem to have a pair of balls to rub together between the lot of them.
  9. IMO the police are a service not a force!
  10. If it's local enough mate it'll be 1 pint of cold cider Where's the site?
  11. I'm about mate if you still need a hand
  12. Haven't spliced anything for ages, so thought I'd celebrate a new splice with a pic.
  13. I will use a top handle on the ground if its a quick few cuts, but I try not make a habit of it. A friend of mine has a whacking great scar across his cheek from using a topper on the ground. It caught a bit of chain link & sliced his cheek nearly completely off, to the point where you could see inside his mouth....but you could class him as one of the lucky ones. I feel the danger is more complacency when using a top handle, or any piece of machinery in our trade.
  14. I don't know what everyone else thinks, but i personally feel that tree surgery/chainsaw related first aid should be mandatory with the cs38. If you can administer some vital first aid before having to deal with the climber being over a crotch, with a tangled up rope etc.. this could make all the difference. Admittedly I'm not the most knowledgeable with first aid, or first aid dangling from a rope. It may be completely implausible .
  15. Hi Stu. Sounds like you're on a bit of a tough deal. Just out of interest what saw are you providing? I did a bit of forestry last year when climbing got a bit thin on the ground. I was getting £80/day, saw & fuel were all provided.
  16. At 6.20 job gets called off , so this is what I'm doing instead . Thought this might interest some people Trees cocooned in spiders webs, an unexpected side effect of the flooding in Sindh, Pakistan | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
  17. This is all a good eye opener. TBH I'd become a bit complacent with ivy (swear at it a bit from time to time ) but don't really strip back the ivy on anchor points, or check for squirrel damage
  18. All this talk of anchor points etc has got me thinking. Has anyone had, or known of an anchor point to fail?
  19. A lanyard/strop is a must...well sort of. Some people climb with both ends of their rope, but thats just a pain Can be cheap too. Probably about 3+ meters of climbing line, a carabiner, a prussic & a pulley to make it a bit easier.
  20. Hi Paul Who taught you to climb, or are you self taught?
  21. Thought i saw a silky on his harness Looked a little out of place along side those huge lumps of timber
  22. Hi hamadryad If others can't make it I'm sure I'll be available, or can make myself available. I live in Hertford working for a local firm & other local firms know me. Will drop you a pm with my mobile number. Dan
  23. Hey Rob Im just making up an adjustable friction saver. Its good following this thread. Nice touch with the throw line & 2nd pulley setup:thumbup1:. You may be able to get away with a small keyring crab in its place for money & weight saving. What are you using to retrieve it? only because i think a knot will catch on the first pulley.
  24. hi stu when are you working there? Iv got a mate in hertford who would have a load off of you. PM me your number if its easier.
