    £800

Browns PTO splitter is ours for that money new.
  2. There seems to me to be more and more people around my way doing work in return for the timber, these are the same people saying they are getting there timber for 'free'!!!! Personally I wouldnt think long and hard about it. I generally charge farmers a standard hourly rate for my work and then offer to buy back the timber, sometimes I end up owing the farming and sometimes the farm owes me, but at least we both know where we stand with this arrangement
  3. had the odd load over last 3/4 weeks, but had 3 orders yesterday and another today, think the arrival of the rain has prompted people to light their fires again
  4. Cracking stuff Mark, welcome to forum
  5. Personally i wouldnt bother, just buy kindling off steve, great product at a price sensible to make a bit of money on
  6. i love it there, parents use to take me and my sister there as kids. then i had the pleasure of working for a silage contracter in the area and i loved mowing/tedding out grass with the rocks in the back ground. I was also sitting on one of the rocks when i took a call from my best friend who informed me she had cancer never forget that call or where i was
  7. i think its just plain simple that joe public has been led to believe that only hardwood should be burnt in their log burners or open fires. im doing my best to re-educate joe dont you worry
  8. Dont put all us farmers in the same boat
  9. i did the exact same thing this time last year, had 15t of Oak I billeted up hoping it'd be ready for last winter, I cut a few logs around Jan time tried at home and no where near ready, they are looking lovely now though
  10. YOu speak sense ash, but id say firewood has more cowboys wacking cheap loads out, these boys would rather sell 5 £30 loads than one £150 load!!!! I know chaps around here sending out trailer loads at £50, my load is same size roughly but will be £100 instead of there £50, they probably have twice as many customers than me but I am happily doing it my way
  11. I think location is the key Kieth, as far as im aware no one around here is selling anywhere near to £25 a dumpie bag. If chaps in the area are you have to adjust prices accordingly, like your hinting at. But when my rival up the road is shifting pick up loads at £130 ill price my loads according to his
  12. IMO i was thinking the same but fair play if that is the case. the odd time i have to use a chainsaw now instead of the bench slows down production massively
  13. Rank One - Airwave, havent heard that cracker for a while thanks for that
  14. Could't agree more my man!
  15. Keith, Keep your man happy, as free wood around my way doesnt exist anymore!! Since i started producing firewood (3 years ago) I'd say most of my imputs have risen between 25% and 50% in 3 years. Red diesel was around 40p but now 67p. Derv £1.00 now £1.40, cord wood £30t now £40t etc etc etc but yet my prices have gone up roughly 10%, I wish I could charge more for a cube, just dont have the guts too!! What im saying is I think the prices you quoted will stay there and hopefully they will, because we (as an industry) need to be charging that sort of money so we are actually making a sensible return from work we all undoubtably enjoy
  16. I hope you are right, im sure you are... I am having to put my prices up this winter, I will be the most expensive in the area, but i am also the only chap who is buying good wood in and the only chap investing my profits back into machinery and more timber etc...i see this as sustainable, not the cowboys wacking loads out around here for peanuts.
  17. I run a McConnell saw bench and Browns log splitter off one tractor, at the same time. Works a real treat. We cut big lumps with a chainsaw so they just fit in the splitter, the I split it into say 6 or 8 billets then my bro whips the lengths across the bench creating 3 good sized logs.
  18. Wish id known about that tire idea when i was splitting by hand!!!!! Great idea!! The chap who also does logs in my yard, has only ever used an axe and think he has been doing it that way for 15rs, and he sends out easily 100 pick up loads last winter. But he is an animal, he extracted easily 120t of timber from one of our woods this winter with just a chainsaw and small car trailer. The comment regarding splitting with an axe messing you joints up isnt far wrong at all
  19. I only used a axe for first year doing logs and did about 70 cube like it. Second year i managed to get my hands on a saw bench and splitter. Probably number of farmers to you with a splitter so maybe borrow one or hire for odd weekend here and there?
  20. may i ask what the other side of your business is?
  21. god we go right mad for it some days, brother made some pigeon pork and suffolk blue cheese burgers one day, unbelievable
  22. How do we define Cool?! I think its cool having a cooked lunch where ever we want when in the woods or up wood yard in the winter time
  23. Excellent little set up andy, i think if the farming side of things hadnt of took off i would be looking into allsorts of quad attachments for niche jobs etc. Your Chelsea looks great by the way
  24. Nick, I dont know you, but me and my girlfriend have been very very touched by your post. thinking of you and your family at such a tough time, really really hope it all turns out well. Ben
  25. I presume you use Fieldens for your quad attachments? Ive got a foreman 500 05 reg, love it for spraying paddocks etc but work has shifted in direction so its for sale now sad times
