  1. how do you actually process your logs? if its a processor and conveyor could you not just send logs straight into bags? or if with saw bench (like me) just drop logs straight in there by hand?
  2. same as this but older and hasnt run for a while but does turn over http://www.logictoday.co.uk/agriculture_system40chassis.phpr
  3. Simon, I have a honda engine with a pto shaft in my yard, it came off a avadex granual applicator. May work?
  4. Nice idea but surely logs falling from that height are going to damage the odd bag? you really want the bag on the ground so no weight is on the handles, otherwise you'll struggle like hell to lift handles off hooks etc
  5. Our trusted old Leyland, no idea how much red she uses but it aint much. runs splitter and bench at the same time just over tick over. seems like weeks between fill ups!!
  6. well the im not getting the tractor out of the shed for less and the established contractor round here is £25.50hr so im happy at that for now. but that is a minimum of a day hr day and close by. Garden hedges and pony paddocks i'll price accordingly but will be prepared to travel if price is right,
  7. ha ha! well i finished my ag degree in 2005, next year ELs started
  8. My tractor, me and hedge cutter = £25hr plus fuel (minimum charge)
  9. oh right i see, majority of set a side legislation was before my time so I dont know an awful lot about it to be honest. the farmer i work with has just entered the HLS (higher level scheme) that takes the ELS to a whole new level. very interesting scheme indeed and i will be spending alot of time this autumn drilling new field margins and corners with my new drill
  10. thank you very much, thats very helpful and interesting. so with them figures, a worker on them example wages i stated is costing the farmer £10.58 an hr? then various insurances, tools, ppe etc etc etc to go on top of that figure?
  11. els isnt part of the area payment. its a voluntry scheme that a farmer can chose to enter, if he does he agrees to a set of legally binding guidelines. The scheme is designed to enhance farm habitats and wildlife, whilst the farmer gets a small financial return for the work involved. If he doesnt follow the rules of the agreement he can be fined a percentage of his single farm payment. The ELS is an interesting scheme and is individual to each farm. as there are hundreds of options available to the farmer. Give it a read sometime
  12. no, 1st of august isnt a deadline at all, just when my agreement starts. just one i am setting myself really, the ragwort needs sorting out by law anyway, regardless of schemes or deadlines. to be honest, the area will benefit greatly from topping. the brambles have got out of control in places and i may well reseed with wild seed mix of some sort in the autumn.
  13. if wire and paint are dodgy areas with the law, how about something that absolutely stinks smeared along top of the fence? fish guts? dog shite?
  14. i worked for a contractor that had a front mounted topper, did a super job. was a bomford. our kuhn topper you can put on front or back linkage i believe
  15. isnt grazon just a compitox & agirtox type mix?? both a lot cheaper than grazon. i have used it once with good effect, but the customer had to buy it as I wasnt convinced extra cost was worth while!
  16. i think i may have to top this field first and then spray the re growth, thinking about it just be too much of an ask for chemical to kill a mature plant i suppose
  17. if there was the odd bit i would, but the meadow looks like a field of rape on flower! plus, you always leave some roots when pulling and they grow back!!
  18. I do alot of pony paddock spraying, with my quad bike and sprayer, mostly for ragwort. I tend to spray it early before it gets to big a plant but got one meadow to do where plants are huge and not sure if my 2-4d and mcpa chemical mix will do the job? ANyone else do similar work?
  19. Ginja, woh that was an emotional read and i dont even know you. you should be very very proud of yourself, like others have said previously. all the best for the future Ben
  20. SE status isnt an issue, i send out anywhere between 6 to 12 different invoices a month and the income from that one chap probably equates to 35% of my earnings, we have discussed things and accountants on both sides are hapy with situation. I have all my own tools, tractor, hedge cutter and chainsaws etc. ANd its not his wage im concerned about. Its the one days here and there, I that I am not sure I am charging enough. With them additional costs, a farmer is probably paying a good chap £15-£18 an hour (everything included in that), I should really be charging that really I suppose. Thanks Justme and Likeitorlumpt.
  21. he's been in the game 30 years and me 3, thats the difference and his customer base is huge!! im not mugging myself this winter though, i'd rather my kit sit in the shed then working like hell for little return
  22. your right there steve, i was talking to my friend who does firewood 7 miles away, we're not really on the same patch but he reckons he dont go out his yard now for less than 130 a pick up, i have now been wanting to put my price up since he said that
