  1. Log Barron, Where/how do you store your logs once they been cut and split? I presume the wood in the picture was felled a while ago? I've got a fair amount of timber on the ground now from coppicing hedge rows etc, i need to collect it all, cut it and split and then store for next year, but not quite sure how to store as yet.
  2. Understand just fine ta, was just trying to keep things simple...and i think Jason understood so no harms done. Measured the bags I use today 0.9 x 0.9 x 1.1 = 0.891, so not far off a cube and not when heaped. THE BAGS I USE ARE RECYCLED SEED BAGS THOUGH. They look just same as builders and presumed they were same size Jason, I only use a saw bench, chainsaw for larger bits and an axe. Unless you got money falling out your pockets i'd put the processor on hold for now, just my opinion though
  3. Jason, I sell my nets @ £4 for mixed seasoned logs and £5 for seriously dry oak (was lucky to get this wood but customers have loved it) I cut logs at 10 inches for nets, but i cut to order for my bulk loads so bigger the log the better. Got one lady who i cut all logs at 18/20 inches, she loves big logs!!
  4. I knew that I'd encourage replies like that, was only trying to help the new guy gage roughly how many nets out of a builders bag. Note how i said heaped builders bags and not miles away, in my sentence. I weren't exactly using precise figures!! I'd love someone to scroll through all threads on here and see how many different figures people have quote what metre cube builders bags are!! Not really sure why such a fuss is made about it. RANT OVER!!
  5. How long is a piece of string?! If its any help, depending on log size i'll fill between between 45 and 50 nets from a really nicely heaped pick up load. The same size pick up load would just about fill (slightly heaped) 2 builders bags, so not miles away from 2mcube. I stand to be shot down no doubt....
  6. Christ this was a cold Saturday during that first phase of snow, thank god we had the 2 stoves that day going
  7. Got 4 Waitrose burgers for lunch tomorrow!! Me and my bro eat better out in the field then me and my girl at home
  8. ...especially when there are 4 lovely bangers sizzling away
  9. I got a 7530 on the farm, only tracotr i use and bloody love it. same size as 6920 but so much more grunt. Does everything on the farm, plough, top dressing, cultivating, spraying ewtc etc etc
  10. There are some knobs about, had the same phone call on Friday and bloke was horrified he had to wait 48hrs till Sunday. I told him he was lucky he weren't ordering heating oil as there would be no way they would deliver on a Sunday. If it weren't for the fact its my first yr of firewood and i'm trying to establish a customer base, I wouldn't of been so polite!!
  11. Interesting reply buddy, whats the digger for??? I've sold just of £2500 of logs in Dec and Jan and only bought an axe
  12. Same as above really. I started selling logs as the farm is quieter Dec/Jan and the processing of Firewood complements this quite nicely. I'm earning about £13-£18 per hr when doing the firewood if thats of any interest. Some days are lot better then others mind you.
  13. Ha Ha I would need more than £80 a load to go all way down to you Dan!! I've took one load to Boxted, thats the only time I have ventured into Essex I believe. Yeah all is good, busy busy. You? HOws the foot?
  14. Thats waht i was getting at really, honesty. I tell the customer exactly what their getting when they order it, no come backs then.
  15. Stuck a flyer in a village shop last weekend, just happened to be a village I dont often pass through so took oppotunity to drop in. No other Firewood flyers on the board, happy days!! Had 5 orders from that one flyer this week and 4 of them orders have come from people not happy with there previous log guy. Trying to pass off green crappy stuff as seasoned doesnt get you many repeat customers apparently
  16. Hows everyone doing with the firewood at the minute? My trade is still as consistant as mid November but the other chap who does firewood on the farm said today that his business has slowed right up over last 2 weeks?! Gonna try do 5 pick up loads tomorrow so i can have first sunday off in Jan!! Anyone run out of wood?! Who is buying extra for next winter?!
  17. LAMMA is a cracking show, needed more then just the day last year to look around at everything. The small business tend to have stand at this show and i find everyone very helpful etc there.
  18. If you re read what i wrote i was implying the college were mad, not the students. I worked in FE (further education) for 2 yrs teaching agriculture and believe me the only way my students learnt anything was by having a go themselves, i.e tractor driving, lambing, coppicing, plumbing etc etc but not in a million years would i have been allowed to use a bench like that in a practical with 20 very keen lads and lasses. YOur right, h&s has gone mad and thats a big reason why i left the teaching role as I was becoming more and more classroom based and further away from reala farming.
  19. Have you thought of the new plastic potato boxes that have just come on to the market, in this weeks farmers weekly. they look very good but pricey
  20. They let you and other students use a saw like that??? MAdness!!
  21. They are easy to make yourself Dave, pallet + bit of livestock fencing stapled to bottom and cable tied together = cage!
  22. Oh yeah thats right up my street. I always get my little homemade stove going at lunch time, home made soup, steaks, toasty sandwiches oh yeah!! I try have my bro with me if i can or g/f helps as well. Get so much more done with another pair of hands.
  23. 73 loads by hand, thats some going my friend. I've done 42 loads with axe and saw this winter and my arms/shoulders twice as big as before and stomach half the size 3 pick up loads tomoro will shift the shite food i've stuffed in my face today!!
