  1. I looked into gritting recently via a big gritting company who advertised in the farmers weekly. There is potential there to earn some good money but initial investment is quite high. You sort of buy a franchise off this gritting company. The chap I spoke to had all contracts sorted this year apart from Portsmouth and South Birmingham. I'm hoping to look into it again more seriously next summer with winter 2010/11 in mind.
  2. A farmer where I get some wood from is building a traditional oak beamed barn at the present moment in time. The oak beams are amazing, huge great bloody things. Oak out of his own wood too. Going to use oak for window ledges and door/window frames etc. He has already replaced all the window frames in the farm house and had them remade with his own timber. Fascinating chap and farm, would be a dream to have money to play like that.
  3. Only went in Pub in Honington once, ventured into the one in Troston bit more for food etc as 30sec min walk from farm yard!! I met DH few weeks ago at Stanningfield where I was carting his sugar beet. Where abouts are you North of the BOarder?
  4. Yeah i think i make bout £20-£25 extra by doing 2 bags instead of one pick up. Am selling bulk bags easy at £55 but people are reluctent to pay much more then 80/£85 for a pick up.

I know its worth more but would rather have the customers now and increase money next year maybe.

  5. Small world bud, I use to live in a farm cottage at Honnington. Worked for Troston Farms then. Now live near Sudbury. Farm is out near Wickhambrook where I found the "fox". Did my chainsaw cert last week at Cockfield Hall. You had enough of Suffolk then?!
  6. Ok so it was only couple of bags worth for my boss's old man but was a lovely ride out in the wintery weather today. Could of gone the road way but took a couple of green lanes instead and saw a few deer
  7. Pretty sure its a Fox. Boss man remembers a gamekeeper hanging one there. And the nose is longer then any pics of badgers skull i've found on net and more teeth. Don't mind being proved wrong tho
  8. Boss told me today that it was a fox someone shot and hung up 2/3 yrs ago. and on closer inspection today i could still so some ginger hairs!! Highland Forester, where in Suffolk did u keep??? may of been one of yours?!
  9. Ok thanks for that. The 50 quid is the total amount i've spent, thats included leaflets, couple of web adverts, few village news letters etc etc. Will look at your posted link now. Thanks
  10. I had some decent flyers made up during the summer for my farm/equine business and couple of weeks ago my graphic designer friend used same template to produce a Firewood one along the same lines. It cost me a bulk bag of wood for the art work so no big cost. I've only put a few flyers in village shops etc but they look so much better then the crap hand writen ones. Probably spent 50 quid in total. Probably delivered to 20+ customers and I'd say third are friends, third from word of mouth and third through the adverts. Not bad from only 4 weeks of doing firewood really.
  11. Real interesting replies chaps, presuming it is a badger now but gonna take game keeper and boss down there wednesday, they'll know if no one else does. I'll also take my proper camera down there and take some better photos, the old phone camera is rather shite!! ha ha!! I doubt very much its been hung there as some sort of trophy by a poacher as its hidden out of site and no one ever goes down that part of the field. The shoot doesnt extend to that part of the farm either. Although I'm not ruling out it being hung up there. Just be very surprised if it has.
  12. No doubt Bodger in the video was sniffing out a Wasps nest in that trunk. The one up my tree was half way up a very small limb going now where, pretty strange if you ask me. And its a good 8ft up too. Lots of Buzzards round here, wonder if one picked it up and put it there for tea?!
  13. I did consider it being a Badger as the farm is riddle with the buggers but do they climb trees?! I've never seen it myself
  14. Its proper odd, no way it got stuck where it was.....taking the boss down there in the morning as he didnt believe me when i got back to the yard earlier!!
  15. I've dropped a load of firewood off to a different customer everyday after work now for 2 weeks so I'm happy with how its going. As I'm busy with the farm anyway, quite happy with how busy it is. Getting orders for more most days :)
  16. As the title suggests really. Was out scarring pigeons off the oil seed raspe today on the Quad bike, stopped next to a small Oak tree to hang a rope banger and found this dead looking thing in the tree. Have absolutely no indeed how it got there. Too high up for it to get caught in flood water etc. Think its a cat but not sure to be honest, only the spine and head left. WIth its fang teeth not sure what else it'd be. Hope it weren't a little dog
  17. What sort of pick up? Are you making much on charging so little?
  18. Oh yeah all thats goes without saying
  19. Hey Buddy

    Hows Tricks?? Firewood busy??

I'm taking a load out each day on average with the pick up so busy enough. What make and model is your saw bench/splitter?? I think if i could find a second hand one i'd be interested in investing in one like yours.

    Cheers

    Ben

  20. I did buddy and got all excited and then realised it wasnt an online deal. Manchester is a fair trek from Suffolk even for a bargin!
  21. Before it gets too bloody cold I need to be buying some new fleeces, jumpers and a nice warm jacket for work etc, anyone suggest any good items of clothing?? Gotta be fairly warm but not restrictive etc First on list is a windproof and waterproof fleece. Thanks in advance for any suggestions
  22. This is my first year doing logs and I'm amazed at how rude some people are. Had a chap call this morning after logs, when I said I couldn't deliver till tomorrow as had other loads to complete he went right off on one and ranted about how tomorrow "just won't do!!" I was going to explain that I had other customers orders to do first but thought to myself I dont really want customers like him anyway so finished the call rather sharpish.
