  1. I've got the vahva jussi trailer/crane and its great. The performance of the crane us unbelievable for the size of it! Mine is the basic 320 crane and standard trailer but i'm looking into getting the winch and 4wd system soon to make it a lot more versatile. With the 4wd it will make it unstoppable in the woods along with with my alpine tractor. I haven't tried it with a quad but I wouldn't fancy it especially if the site has any inclines/decents. Vahva jussi is a proven design and are used extensively in Scandinavia. Theres a setup on the vahva jussi Facebook page that has hauled over 17,000 m³ of timber in the last 3 years with no issues!
  2. Not really... I personally think if you have the spare time and space, then there's good money to be made. Better than logs in some way! The way we saw it was my wifes time was free time anyway. She was doing admin work for me since our first child was born and she had left her job. This is how it worked for us: She could do 50 nets (60cm x 45cm loose filled) in just over an hour on her own. When I was up the yard, at the end of the day I would spend 30mins cutting the 8" rings on the processor straight into the tipper. I would bring them home and tip out straight next the kindling machine. My wife would then process the wood into nets and load onto pallets on a trailer. I was selling alot of them along with my firewood sales for £4 a net but I also sold wholesale to a few local firewood dealers. Our wholesale price was £2 a net with 100 net minimum order. So here's the maths: our nets when wet weighed 8.5kg (5kg dry). A 26t lorry load of softwood is £900 delivered in. If we round up the weight of the net to 9kg wet, then you get 111 nets per ton. Multiply by 26t = 2886 nets 2886 nets X £2 =£5772 Minus the nets £300 Minus the timber cost £900 =£4572 Thats not bad money in my eyes! And that's if you sold them all at the wholesale price! Yes, i'm not including costs for fuel, electricity, machine costs, etc. but they are minimal. It was all done in spare time and its extra money which we wouldn't have had.
  3. My 230volt Posch Autosplit is going on arbtrader tonight. Its a year old and has only done about a thousand nets! It was bought for my wife to use but since then she's dropped another sprog so it hasn't been used in 9 months! It's a brilliant machine... It will split 8" long kindling into either loose filled nets or fold down the chute for neatly stacked nets. At a twist of a dial, it will then make logs which can be neatly netted easily. It is like brand new (except for a bit of paint missing from the cutting knife!).
  4. Lovely looking shed! What size was it? Have you got any more pics?
  5. Take a look at this video from 1:08 onwards. I stumbled across it when looking at alpine Tractors. Looks a handy little setup on a small excavator. Is it a tapio head? goldoni+vahvajussi:
  6. It's £2000 INCLUDING vat. This is from hmrc: 15.2 Reclaim of VAT on capital expenditure goods If you use the flat rate scheme, you can reclaim the VAT you have been charged on a single purchase of capital expenditure goods where the amount of the purchase, including VAT, is £2,000 or more.
  7. Sell it and buy an alpine! You know it makes sense! ☺
  8. I've been dreaming it up in my head for years and its all fallen into place in the last few months. Just need a winch now and i'll be happy for a while!
  9. Is it the same model tractor? It's a really simple system but 1 problem I had was the spreader bar which sits under the dash, had 1 spring pulling the bar forward, but on the other side there was a spring pulling the bar back, so the l/h wheel was always slightly binding. I made up a tab and moved the spring so it pulls the bar forward like the other side and its fine now. How do you find sourcing parts?
  10. 280kgs at full reach (3.2m) or 415kgs at 2m. It is very deceiving... When you look at the crane you think it wouldn't be able to lift much but its so powerful for its size.
  11. Ferrari 75 alpine tractor with vahva jussi trailer. Had it in the woods for the first time today and I'm mightily impressed with what it can pull and climb up/over! Anyone got a vahva jussi crane winch or 4wd system for sale... Let me know!
  12. I've just bought a load of 'toptex' from here: http://www.flexiblelining.co.uk/toptex-firewood-woodchip-crop-and-compost-storage-covers I'm using it to cover hay bales in the field but they advertise it for use with timber stacks or firewood. When it arrived it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. It's like a woven landscaping fabric and isn't waterproof in itself. However, water runs off it and let's the material (timber, hay, straw, woodchip etc.) underneath it breathe. I spoke to the manufacturer about it and they assure me it works! I will report back further in the year. I found with tarps that the top layer of logs were always saturated with condensation so maybe toptex will cure this problem.
  13. I personally wouldn't recommend getting one. I had one as a stop gap between navara's. It had 6 months mot and seemed to run fine when I bought it. It soon developed a misfire and £400 later still wasn't totally cured. It was very thirsty, and rubbish at towing compared to a navara. Come mot time, it failed on welding on the chassis. It was totally knackered at the backend. Places to look are around the spring seats. It is very difficult to see in there but take a wheel off and have a GOOD look around. If there is any sign of corrosion, walk away! Has it got coil spring or air suspension? If it's the latter, chances are it will go wrong. Personally, for that money, I would get an old hilux or l200.
  14. Mine has one of these strap winches retro fitted and works well. It simply replaced the original winch with the same mounting holes. Only about £20 on ebay. Sent from my GT-I9505 using Arbtalk mobile app
  15. Aviva for me too. Navara 55 plate king cab £320 and £370 for a new 14 plate crewcab (if it ever turns up!) Sent from my GT-I9505 using Arbtalk mobile app
  16. Yes, with the posch machine, you can fold the discharge chute out of the way to fill loose nets, or fold the shoot back down for neatly stacked nets. Very simple. It did make the 4x2's into kindling but i found the output slow and the timber being fed in on the conveyor would sometimes twist slightly and then cause a jam. It may have been down to the timber itself not being so straight grained. As i understand you are milling poplar for the kindling machine, so if you could cut big slabs (like the size of half a concrete block) i bet it would fly them through. Because of the volume of timber going into the machine, your output would constantly be high. If you're ever going over the severn bridge into south wales, bring a couple of big lumps with you and pop in and try it.
  17. Also, to make logs, just turn the conveyor speed up and bingo! Flip the bagging tray down and fill stacked nets easily. This was the main buying point for me. The kindletts 5-3/4“ long kindling / logs are too short in my opinion.
  18. I've got the single phase machine. Its brilliant with round wood and the output really increases with larger diameter rings (around 10" max i think from memory). I only ever demo'd a pto machine and initially i was disappointed at the single phase machine speed, but when i started using it, it is perfect. I loose fill 65x40 nets and pack them full and get an output of 50 nets an hour easily. I didn't get on with joinery offcuts though. I've got loads of 4x2's but the output and hassle wasn't worth it.
  19. You've had a bad truck by the sounds of it and its a shame nissan haven't dealt with it better but your above statement is wrong with my experience of navaras. 7yrs and 168k and it NEVER let me down. It worked its nuts off towing and with plenty of offroad work. It had many a battle scar to prove it! A mate has x6 navaras for his environmental company and he swears by them. Many of them have 200k+ miles and get driven hard!
  20. I had a 55 plate d40 and did 168,000 in it. The only things i had to replace was a clutch (under warranty at 59k) and a front propshaft uj! I sold it last year and really miss it. I had an l200 straight after it and hated it... Plasticy inside, couldn't handle a bit of weight in the back, and was made of tinfoil! Now got a disco but just ordered a brand spanking new tekna! Will be here first week of march. Theres some great deals on new ones at the moment!
  21. Does anyone have a spec's for planting a hedgerow or any tips on points to include? The hedgerow is to be planted as a clause of a sale of a small corner of a field to a neighbouring property so we need a good specification to be included. Otherwise i could see the new owner sticking a few plants in the ground and claiming that as a hedge! The original hedgerows in the fields are a mix of hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn and holly. Is there a BS for hedgerow planting? The hedge will need to be stockproof eventually but a stock fence will also be erected behind the hedge What points should be included for the spec? - 40-60cm rootball plants? - what spacing? - staggered or straight planting? - what protction guards? - mulch/weed control? Any help much appreciated!
