  1. It al9so affects builders with regard to site clearances, not sure if its a legal thing or if its juat because they are trying to show more enviromental conciousness.
  2. I now own this one ^ tis a heavy old lump but does the job, not as fast as a newer saw but chances are will still be goin when most new saws are in a skip, also run a 1986 stihl 028 which I've had from new which has done loads of work and taken loads of abuse and is still capable of a good days work.
  3. Todays job was interesting, managed to miss all the gravestones with some carefull cutting and use of the tirfor we missed the closest gravestone to the trunk by 6inches
  4. Its only the early ford engines that were prone to going porous if its got the x block it will be ok.
  5. It's interesting this obsession in UK that all firewood must be sold dry. Travelling around continental Europe it seems the onus is very much on the house owner to season their timber as the houses are surrounded by stacks of wood, not this 6 to 10 inch nonsense we have either. Of course it's not such an urban society over there and you see families out at weekend gathering up wood in old harvesting sites. Hit the nail on the head, we need more education not regulation. All my regulars buy thier winters supply in during spring and summer so they dry it and store it as suits them even though it will be seasoned and have been dried in the shed for a period before I deliver it, charge same price as it would be in winter and I've always got some ready in the shed if they need a top up over winter.
  6. Still blowing here not quite as hard as last night had manages to blow down part of a hay stack in the barn overnight luckily missed the calves in the pen next to it, not seen any tree damage round here yet.
  7. 20 years ago a local woodsman told me logs were a hard way to make a living and at that time there were only about 3 of us doing it locally, firewood job is cyclical, its simple supply and demand if people want it and its cold they will buy it if its warm they won't its sweet fa to do with gas or coal prices, the main problem I would say is the bad rep firewood has got due to the amount of cheap wet unseasoned wood that gets supplied by less reputable suppliers which has tarred all firewood with the same brush, this year same as last prkblem is its mild, I've only been burning my woodburner for a couple of houra late evening except during the colder spells, whereas year before last it was lit all night every night from the first of september through til april.
  8. Cheers for your help Rustcutter, I'll have a look at those rams when I get time.
  9. Have sorted it now, turns out the lever next to the seat which I assumed was for the pickup hitch release as it looks same as pickup hitch release lever on an older tractor is actually the 4wd/2wd selector and was'nt actuallt in either! Have also found out the two small rams at the back of the mast have been disconnected at sometime, I assume due to a burst pipe as it seems to be missing one and the remaining one has been capped.
  10. Think it was £1.11.9 for unleaded and £1.19.9 for derv round here other day but depends where you look if go further up the road can get it 4p a litre cheaper.
  11. did wonder that it is 4wd as theres props to both axles but wondered if its selectable as it has been rewired at some point but seems to be quite a few wires that were not reconnected, more annoying is that I went up and down the same slope in the bobcat on bald tyres so I could finish what I was trying to do with the telehandler , not sure what the axles are from they have sanderson on the hubs, but it is ford engined and I know alot of the older handlers were tractor based, will have to have a crawl under it when I can get it back on the yard.
  12. Evening all recently purchased the above and used it in anger for the first time today and got it stuck! it seems to be sending all the power to one front wheel and none to the other three although when you first start off it feels like it rocks on all 4 then just sends the power to the one, any ideas?
  13. Was dry and foggy this morning up here started raining/sleeting mid afternoon and then to snow about 5ish 2-3 inches now
  14. 16. Yep usually so, but this one was very clean not even any barb wire ! Only downside is it looks like we've got to go back and fell that ash as its diseased, now I've layed round it.
  17. Just done this one this week on a building site in leicester.
  18. Can cook most things, my mum always said by the time we left home we would all be able to cook, clean and sew, I can still do all three though the second two are rarer than the first
  19. Did'nt bother with it last year was so completely sickened by it being rammed down your throat for the preceeding months that we did'nt even get the decorations out of the loft and for the 5th year running the oh is working xmas day as she works in a care home so will only get to spend few hours together, mind anytime soon they will start ramming january sales and easter eggs down our throats to take our minds off it
  20. Finally been and got my long promised one done today
  21. First year this year that I got my peppers started early enough, had a lovely crop coming and then did'nt get into greenhouse for couple of days due to work, when I did get to it bloody caterpillars had been through the lot, tomatoes too, leaves and fruits, complete waste of time
  22. Be nice if it did, my great grandad was the last full time farmer in our family, farmed 12 acres, off which he could feed his family and have surplus to sell, to put it in perspective I'm farming 50 acres all rented under various agreements and have to work 5 days a week to make ends meet
  23. Fair point, I only farm small scale for quality anyway, took a beast to the abbatoir on monday, only ever been grass fed and slow grown, will be hung 3 weeks aand all sold privately at a decent price.
  24. Gypsy casserole, think its also called poor mans goose, chopped belly pork, an onion and maccaroni pasta, bung it in and pour some stock over it with a bit of chilli in and leave it to cook down or alternatively beef and chorizo stew.
  25. I can't agree with a), being a beef and sheep farmer but I do agree with b), sell by dates and use by dates and a lack of common sense and the blame culture all come together to cause the amount of waste, heard something earlier think it was something like 129 million tonnes of usable food wasted every year in UK, not to mention all the waste from all the plastic and polystyrene packaging on everything
