  1. Because our industry cares for trees and manages them according to their situation, if I am brought in to advise on a tree, I would recommend my opinion on the situation, in this one, due to its location, I would recommend removing some trees and pruning others hard. You can assess these trees all you want, use fancy equipment costing thousands, but knowledge of tree/fungi interactions and having a good understanding gives good reason to have the flash tools as more of a last resort!
  2. I sliced A chunk off the tip of my finger on Sunday making some chips. Now I've had to pay an extra guy to work on my jobs because I can barely do anything without knocking it and making it bleed! Oh yeah and it didn't hurt when I did it, but it did like to bleed. Cue me going pale white and not being much good at standing up!
  3. ive got the rigging book, what else is in your collection?
  4. ive climbed with two phones in my pocket for a while now, little bit of sawdust but no damage, handy if you want a quick pic too! If im doing firewood in the yard i have my headphone wire up my shirt and then under my ear defenders, ive got some Bose Triport IE headphones. they are good at blocking noise out as they are, with those in, i have it at medium volume, i can hear music fine over my 660 with its loud exhaust. i wouldnt use it on a takedown though, i like to hear everything.
  5. a combination of an iphone with the headphones they provide would be good, as it is also a hands free kit so you can get the groundy to phone you while you explain things instead of shouting! I used to have a phone pouch zip tied to my harness, i would sit my phone in that and play music during rec climbs, makes it more enjoyable.
  6. good job tony, not as big as mine from the other week but you made that one look much better!
  7. Steve there is an app called SLR cameras for dummies on the app store. Very simple to understand and helped me learn how to get a better grip of the camera. Macro shots depend on the lens, what lens do you have? There is a little flower icon on the lens which then has a distance next to it, my 18-55mm lens has the symbol and 0.25m next to it. That means that the closest you can get for a macro shot is 0.25m otherwise you can't focus on it. To get a better shot I use manual focus as auto picks the closest bit so is tricky. Manual means you can get a more rounded focus of the whole subject.
  8. So to tow a 750kg trailer with a 4x4 truck plated at more than 2751kg I will need an operators license? It confuses me this stuff!
  9. just a trim total weight removed: 10 TONS
  10. as they were dead they are able to be felled, however usually with some notice to the council, usually trees are required to be replanted in their place.
  11. what books in particular are you after? i have a fair size collection here
  12. Ganoderma resinaceum - Lacquered Bracket - David Humphries’s Fungi Directory - Arbtalk.co.uk | Discussion Forum for Arborists Selective delignifier, can cause failure/windthrow
  13. seconded! Pleurotus ostreatus - Oyster - David Humphries’s Fungi Directory - Arbtalk.co.uk | Discussion Forum for Arborists
  14. i buy it because i know what it does, i then learn how to use it. low and slow!
  15. if your taking a good bit off i climb up through, if its just a little trim ladders are good. Long reach cutters help a lot!
  16. I know those trees! May go and have a gander. Quite interesting. It's a shame that some of them will have to come out though. some nice specimens. What do you think, RobArb me and detritus, all done on a Sunday?
  17. I get to jobs sometimes and think I wish I could fell this instead. Then I would be done by 10!
  18. after reading these other comments, about 1p! I jumped to a conclusion, should have consulted the books first or at least waited for the more knowledgable folk! Its all a learning curve!
  19. I would put money to Hericium cirrhatus, i have seen it on old beech logs looking pretty similar!
  20. can anybody see the wise old man in this vet castanea? look at the two round shadows just left from the centre low down
  21. I did 3 8ft conifers cut down and stumps dug out in 2 and a bit hours. Did it alone. Used a winch and left the stems long and as they went over i cut the roots. I don't think your attitude is right. Getting other quotes and then just knocking money off is not good and if I found out people did that to me I wouldn't have much respect for them.
  22. i think poeple are expecting worse and worse winters so are beginning to realise that there is a better way to deal with white stuff than a house brush and table salt. We just use a snowplough mounted on a tractor loader, and have access to one of the big gritting wagons if neeeds must!

    Movember

I would if my top lip would let me grow one. Grrrrr Some college mates are doing it. Happily donating!
  24. http://Www.interparcel.com Gives you quotes for a few couriers. Good prices too.
  25. The wages are low because it is legally a college (further education) and not a uni (higher education). So the maximum for a lecturer, no matter what quals they have, if they are titled as lecturer the wages aren't brilliant. If you start getting higher such as senior lecturer and researcher then that's when the numbers match. It's a shame really. Because people like Andy Hirons and Duncan Slater are brilliant teachers with a real love for what they do and have a great deal of knowledge.
