  1. try the book 'Physiology of Woody plants 2nd/3rd edition' i used it for an assignment and its got everything you will probably need. Another one is Up by roots, ive not read it but i do hear its very good
  2. conifers use tracheids to transport water, where broadleaves use xylem and phloem
  3. the worst thing about that video was that... he couldnt use his insole again OH THE HUMANITY!
  4. ive bought a couple of quickdraws, came to 7.50 with postage. A thought i had about it would be that you would have to pick it up to be able to clip in because the quickdraw would hang down no? also, i was looking at a maillon rapide instead because its half the price of a shackle! i have actually never noticed that label. i probably have, but i cant remember it. if it was stiched on then its still there, but i cant remember anything. if it was sticky then it came off a loooonnnggg time ago!
  5. oh yeah, St helens merseyside, ive got a car and i am willing to drive, not crazy far though
  6. toe what extent do you think you can drag these cheesy jokes out for?
  7. Hey guys im looking for some climbing experience, i was going to be working with an arborist this week and over the next few months but things have taken a bad turn and now none of that will happen. hmm. so now im just looking for work really, ive got 3 free weeks now apart from weekends and i just want some work, ive got a full set of climbing gear and my own ms260. im trained in cs39 so i can use a saw up there as long as theres a guy on the ground whos got the ticket. looking forward to opportunities, ill turn my hand to anything cheers!
  8. i would assume they are rated the same, as the bridge is attached to them! I hop ethey are anyway. for two shackles and two quickdraws, what would you say the cost is?
  9. Thanks for the answers and that amazing tip. I think I will be trying that out. So it's ok to run the carabiners onto those little shackles? I'm aware of the no metal to metal. That's why I was asking mainly, as I have a friend who uses the treemotion which has two sets of d's. And the idea of converting those rings on my sequoia seems a great idea. Another question, when would you use the extra set of rings? I'm guessing you could use them as normal on changeovers as a replacement for the other d rings? This I'm guessing would give an advantage to using two lanyards. One on each set?
  10. Hi guys ive been using the sequioa harness for a few months now, its a very comfy and good harness to use i think. But my query is with the side d attachments. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but i just cant come to a conclusion on it myself. are the brass coloured rings at either side of the bridge an extra set of d rings for a lanyard? so far ive been thinking no, because they arent the same type of construction compared to the proper side ds thanks
  11. If theres anybody up in the merseyside area, my family runs a business of selling chrismat trees, we grow our own fraser firs, ship in a couple thousand nordman firs, some norway spruce, some scots pine. We shift most of them too, the price has rocketed over the last couple of years, a 6ft nordman 5 years ago would have been less than £30 depending on the quality, now they are knocking £40-45. We charge £7.50/ft for those, and for anything over 10ft because of the cost we bought them in at we have to charge £14/ft! the pricing has gone silly over the last few years. if your in the area and looking for a tree i can do you a deal if you say you are from here!
  12. no i dont really, can honestly say ive never been. I live 2 minutes from the place but never been to it, never been interested in sports.
  13. My dad did have one for a while, he sold it a month or two ago, i think it cost about £900 new, he got the two part system, the big speaker/single cd deck and the radio and 5 cd part too, all came to over £1k, but it is loud enough to use outside for a good party. Personallly, i would have chosen something else, i use the bose in ear headphones which i cannot rate to any others for sound quality, they are just like aving a proper system either side of your head. i use a companion 5 system on my pc and that can provide some prety serious volume.
  14. as you may know, there are two parts to the CS38, I had never climbed before until my training course and i was struggling to get over the fear factor in the climbing, and i could never trust my kit properly like the other guys. I just got through on the climbing but when doing aerial rescue i couldnt remember how to do it properly, i was attempting to tie a blakes, but because i was aerial it made me have to tie it from the back side of it and it threw me out and i couldnt tie it right, i did on my 3rd attempt but the assessor said he couldnt pass me on it. i was gutted because i was confident when on the training using a chainsaw, the extra points of contact made me a lot more confident. and it sucks that i have to do it again!
  15. sorry to dig up an old thread nand whether you need the comments anymore but i use one and ive attached a petzl swivel to the bridge and a metal ring, i prefer to use the ring because the biner doesnt spin round when im changing over. That was the main gripe i had with the swivel, when you climbed up another branch or two during a changeover you can catch the swivel and spin it round and it would cause some problems, unlike with the metal ring. i do find its a very comfy harness with plenty of good sized gear loops.
  16. yeah im sure they did sponsor a sports ground somewhere, never really interested in sports, chainsaws were more my interest since i was 16. but there is a rugby team named after them.
  17. Hi There ive been loooking through the forum for a week or two now and decided to register, but not decided to post until now. Just thought i would introduce myself! I live in st helens merseyside and im attending Myerscough College doing an FdSc in Arboriculture for 2 years. I have my CS30-34 and then CS38 too, ive been through the training course for CS39 but failed the assessment and im just waiting for the training to happen again at myerscough. Im just looking to expand my knowledge, i can read plenty in books and hear from my tutors and instructors, but i really want the real world knowledge that will help me in my climbing career hopefully. Im almost 19 and like a sponge with knowledge! Thanks for reading, hope this is the right place for this!
