  1. yeah it happens to me almot every day!
  2. im doing one now, without it, i wouldnt even know 10% of what i do now. Im doing the FdSc. Its not just about having the degree, you learn a lot more around trees and about their anatomy and their evolution, the soil they grow in and even down to their DNA pretty much, you learn a lot.
  3. ive had a play with some old blaze rope and what i had in my kit, i have no maillons so had to stick with normal biners, this was just getting an idea of what it could look like. i am aware that this needs changing, i need a shorter prussik, a different pulley and maillons. Is it worth sticking with the fishermans on each end? or should i splice it?
  4. thats why im looking into it a bit more, i want to get the better quality cords and pulleys for them to work properly when they are all together, a ropeguide is probably the beetter option, but money isnt on my side as you know. i coudl use an ART pulley instead of the oscillante, but that amkes it a lot more expensive! ive got some money on the way soon, from some work i did a couple weeks ago so i will be using that for kit!
  5. i sure do love how 'british' oaks are, they will take their time and not make a fuss, when they do its a big one. And are pretty resistant to disease to my knowledge beech on the other hand, although they are a great tree to climb with loads of anchors, they succumb to diseases more easily and are more likely to fail.
  6. ill keep all of this in mind, but i would let any moths out my wallet unless i had my rigging ticket done, and ill probably ask similar questions like these again after they start to make even more sense. Im learning a lot from this place
  7. yeah i was thinking splices, but im just thinking of costs really, if there was anyone who could splice up some rope for me if be grateful here is the list so far: HB15MC - Maillon Rapide - Standard 8mm £2.95 ex VAT Quantity HB15MD - Maillon Rapide Pear Link 12mm £7.00 ex VAT Quantity HB15M - Maillon Rapide Delta Steel Link 10mm £4.25 ex VAT Quantity HB8AF/PS - Marlow Boa 9mm Friction Cord - TiedLength: 50 cm £6.50 ex VAT Quantity HB20C - Petzl Oscillante Pulley £8.04 ex VAT Quantity HB8CB - Yale XTC-12 Climbing Rope £3.18 ex VAT Quantity Total ex VAT £31.92 i have an oscillante already, but i dont know whether to use that one i have already or buy one specially for this to keep it all together. its working otu cheaper than other makes which are simpler in design
  8. i was planning to go for tying some fishermans knots round the same as i would with my lanyard or climbing line friction cords, and make sure they are all secure and stuff
  9. so for rope you would recommend something more like a 16mm for a 16mm block and a 19mm split tail? on a side not ive got some good news, im managing to get my CS39 training through myerscough for free because of my FDSC and ive got an assessment credit for an assessment thats paid for but didnt complete, so my plans this summer have suddenly become a lot cheaper! this hopefully means i can spend more on some godo rigging, i would go and buy that in person after ive got a good idea of what to buy
  10. thats what i was thinking, a big maillon on the left hand side and a pulley with a small gap, like a petzl fixe or something, as then i could just tie a knot in it and it would pull on the pulley and pop through the maillon, that was my aim anyway. i do remember that, ill have a look for that too, im sure his idea was similar ive seen that, but was looking for something like a pulley as its a lot smoother IMO. Maybe a crab with a pulley in would work too? as when the rope drops through the other loop it would ride on the pulley instead of a ring, plus i want to feel good about making my own stuff
  11. is it possible for me to make my own adjustable cambium saver? i was thinking buy a 1.5m length of rope, buying some prussik material, a pulley and some metal rings. what would bet he best ropes to make this of? How would be the best way to put this together? is this any good? sort of like a cheap adjustable friction saver. here is a very poor quality drawing example
  12. could that be heavy loading over a long period of time? i.e. lowering big pieces slowly and often, instead of more smaller pieces quickly?
  13. do splices come under any sort of regulation if ive done them myself? as learning to do so may help me in the future. Ill have a look at how to splic that tennex, and see how i feel about it i can tie a timberhitch, ive done some basic stuff but most of the system was set up by someone else. Why is money so expensive.
  14. a knut is an odd hitch, it will only work on certain combinations of friction cord and rope, a good combination is ocean polyester and 12mm yale XTC+, very grippy. But it doesnt work well with pulleys. I attach one loose on a non load beearing carabiner to help when tending, but thats the only need for a pulley, it doesnt even need one anyway. ive got a 10m scorch line with a silverbull hip bag, ive used a VT and a distel and find the distel less temperamental, a 0.65m OP e2e sling is the perfect length, bites straight away and takes up little room
  15. is the tenex the 3 strand rope? How much is it to learn to splice? id love to learn how, and how would i then go about being a CE certified splicer? as then my splices would be LOLER passable correct?
  16. ive heard them be called that so thats how i know them, but i never knew the difference, but then again i never really paid attention to look. What is the need in a whoopie if there is a split tail? surely because no matter how big the eye is its not going to make much difference? unless you can hook it round a stub on a branch and need to extend it? i think id go with the liros 12mm and the 16mm split tail, seems a good few sizes up i think! using the cheaper rope knocks about 15 quid off the cost, need all the money i can get really. especially with a lack of work. There is always my student loan! Thanks rupe, some good helping there!
  17. What would be the best way to anchor at the top, another split tail like i have? and ive never been able to work out the difference with whoopie and loopie slings, can you enlighten me?
  18. some of this? HB94 - Yale Double Esterlon Lowering Rope - 13mm Yale Double Esterlon Lowering Rope - 13mm i could go for a heavyweight pulley, i was thinking the lightweight one would suffice, but this stuff is worth investing in! probably one of these if id go for one HB91DA - Heavy Duty 16mm Small Pulley Heavy Duty 16mm Small Pulley ive got a budget of probably stretching to £250 with everything so far: HB91NA - Yale Split Tail 16mm x 4m £38.95 ex VAT Quantity HB20AB - ISC Figure of 8 Horned Descender £23.95 ex VAT Quantity HB14DB - DMM 12mm Kwiklock Steel Karabiner £17.00 ex VAT Quantity HB94 - Yale Double Esterlon Lowering Rope - 13mm £92.25 ex VAT Quantity [/url] HB91DA - Heavy Duty 16mm Small Pulley £67.00 ex VAT Quantity Total ex VAT £239.15
  19. So, over the summer im aiming to go through my CS39, 40 if the budget allows and 41, and if i manage to, ill be looking to buy some rigging kit, can anybody recommend a basic kit? Currently ive been going through honeybros and got this list: HB91NA - Yale Split Tail 16mm x 4m HB94C - Liros Rigging Rope - 12mm HB20AB - ISC Figure of 8 Horned Descender HB91LA - Lightweight Lowering Pulley 45kN HB14DB - DMM 12mm Kwiklock Steel Karabiner im looking for a good balance of quality but fairly cheap. What would you guys think?
  20. there is a local park near me with some sycamores ranging from 10-15m, ive climbed pretty much all of them, get some hassle from kids but i just tell them to go away if they start to mess with my kit. Have haad a few people stop and have a little chat about climbing and stuff, its good sometimes, but on your own is a bit of a no no. i dont go out anymore, ive got nobody in my local area to climb with on a weekend really.
  21. and you wonder why we have big insurance premiums?
  22. I've already seen a few lambs. As well as daffodils popping up and snowdrops too. Looking forward to more cracking weather. Makes some great working!
  23. they are very good quality products! great for this type of work. I gave an old one to my girlfriend and i sat on it, dont know how, but the screen was all cracked, the invisibleshield held all the glass in and she continued to use it for about 8 months!
  24. I use a zagg invisibleshield on mine and have done on my other 4 previous iPhones. I have one on cameras and on my iPod too. They are £15 for an iPhone kit. Don't add any bulk at all, and are 100% scratchproof. Worth the investment and come with a lifetime warranty. The screen cover kept travelling up and folding over. I'm onto my 7th front cover. Each one was replaced under warranty!
  25. Yeah I know. The pulling line was more there for a sideways pull if anything. And watching the video again it does seem the better idea now. It was all weighted to come down in that direction. The limb on the opposite side to me was weighting it towards another tree. The line was there to pull against it. We were very pushed for time that day as I had another 3 pops to crown lift so wanted to take as big a piece out as possible. I wanted tofell it but it would either go into a tennis court fence, a wooden fence on an alleyway, or roll off it's neighbour and hit the tennis court fence! Thanks for the tips guys. Will be taking them all in
