  1. However their is also a risk with the inoculations, i closed down a busy gp surgery and was rushed to hospital after reciving it, was ill for weeks afterwards. I would say this is only applicable to people handling bats and if you have the licence you will already have the vaccines.
  2. I think thats a load, you really dont need any qualification to get on in life, i would employ a man with experience and knowledge over a cocky numpty out of college demanding top whack any day. If ypou are good at what you do people will sniff you out and pay the appropriate huge cash sum..
  3. Exactly, i even watch stuff on ebay and my wife goes on saying why are you watching saws etc. I usually reply its cause i need a fix Now adays i have started getting excited about new plotters or new computers to run Cad Last month was quite exciting though as i had to buy some new GPS hardward and lasers. Over the christmas period we should be getting our new robotic total station getting quite excited about this one as it should save masses of time.
  4. Was talking to a friend last week and has bought himself aload of new climbing kit and a couple of saws for himself as an early chritmas present. Felt abit jealous so ordered myself a few early presents, anyway they arrived this morning, all books and the highlight of which was Town & Country Planning In The UK. You dont know how lucky you are when on the tools, you get to buy cool stuff and play with brilliant toys/equipment. Enjoy it
  5. Snowed adgain last night, we have about 10-12" now....... hope its still here tomorrow.
  6. This is a great pdf http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/fcin078.pdf/$file/fcin078.pdf Dont knbow if this one still works REVIEWS -- Review by the EDITOR 6 (2): 191 -- Forestry Giles not forgot about the Terram inof data, will find it over christmas and email it over
  7. James you are correct in your thinking, the roots of a tree will not only recover from minor but also significant damage. For instance a tree with significant root compaction that is showing signs of distress in the crown can benefit significantly from decompaction works, but please be aware that just waving an airspade around and chucking up a bit of dirt isnt sufficent. A tree will require time to rejuvinate and quick fixes are not possible, infact if you see this happening soon after any rpa works it will most likely be the tree has been further damaged and is having its last push. We have recently (past 2years) managed decompaction works on a row of HC's with B-Canker, another row was left as is as the funds where not available to treat them. The trees that recived radial trenching and mulching are still in good nick, but unfortunately the others have all died. Tree health care/root management is not an exact science and has really not yet been explored. If you are still looking for bits on this i suggest searching whe web for US based info and contact chaps out there as they are very helpful. If you want i could have a look in our archives and see if i can root ;') anything out.
  8. Does anybody know what these are ? Found in the RPA of a Pine that has seen better days, root compaction/damaged roots/stemdamage etc etc Thanks in advance
  9. Are those the willows down the road from the forestry Commision offices ?
  10. Very true, we have taken over a contract for a client who has been paying for just over 6000 trees to be surveyed a year, we have done some desktop studies and risk zoned trees and have reduced it to just under 400 trees, the client was worried why this was as so the previous company said that 6k + trees was the minimum needed. Once explained he was fairly happy
  11. The only way to go is to get a disk lock, one look at that and they will just move on tio the next car, also another little trick is to knock the diff over so if they do get in it and put the throttle down it will give a nice roar to wake you up.
  12. A high target like that is a big enough reason, bravo on not felling it
  13. Did this tree really need fidling with, i know of lots like this and never give any recs, was it just an excersise to say you are aware of the tree and are working to reduce targets Sorry just seems a bit pointless to me
  14. Also i think its important to mention that many of these LA's require contractors to be AA approved, yet they cant look after their own home. Actually thats a bit pointless as AA approved doesnt have anything to do with quality work, decent/required kit or general H&S.
  15. If i worked for the LA i would simply get the union on the case, state what you need to do the job properly and safely and refuse to work until they sort it out, if you have a good union it will be sorted, if not say you will go to the papers. Afterall what are they going to do, fire you because you wont risk your safety due to not having the correct kit and the council cutting corners, the papers would have a field day. If the private sector has to do it by the book why shouldnt the councils, i can guarantee you if there was an issue with the bin mens safety the whole council would shut down. It makes me sick what some of the LA chaps have to deal with
  16. Call the LA as it looks like there is a highway in the background, they will serve them with an enforcement notice to have it removed.
  17. Great buy at that price for someone, i know the chap and it is really well looked after
  18. apply to the Utilities companies for maps of services... they send them free.... Just say your planning felling and grinding works in the areas you want maps for..... You wont find anything policed for coyright like mapping, if you do go down the above mentioned routes be extremely careful. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ordnance Survey © Crown copyright 2009 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also remember all the threads on arbtalk about cowboys cutting corners, surely this would be the same.
  19. Really it depends on what scale you want, ideally OS Mastermap, however the price would be in the thousands. An alternative is 1:10,000 Raster in a tiff format, you wont be able to edit it but will bring it into the hundreds. Buying wise we have accounts with: Ordnance Survey - maps and geographical data of Great Britain Promap - Ordnance Survey maps, aerial photos and reports http://www.centermaps.co.uk mapsuk.co.uk They are all about the same price, except if you buy large areas direct from OS you can get good rates. Someone said £25 earlier, this will get you roughly one house, maps are extorianate, can you not get them from whoever you are working for, if its an LA or gvt body they will have a licence which will cover your use. If you want PM your details and i can have a chat with you.
  20. There is a massive supplier on the way over from gretna to dumfries, sure if you google them they you will find details
  21. Not stopping him doing a good job though
  22. Cambridge audio is cheap for a reason, great name that sounds top quality but is actually made from taiwan mass produced shod. I would never say that bose is stylish, infact is quite ugly however we have bose home cinema and was bought because of the sound quality, doesnt look great comared to the likes of B&W .
  23. x by how ever many trees and you would be supprised. If you ordered a taxi and i replied i could pick you up in a merc instead of the nissan sunny but it would be 3x more for you 10 min trip to the pub you would tell me where to go
  24. Prob is when you explain about alloy nails to the client and the extra cost its a big NO. I wont pay the difference and therefore we use the cheaper version and as can be seen is no good. Catch 22
  25. We use trust, to be honest i didnt even shop around as dealing with them is so easy.. I was shocked this year as out pro indemnity is half what we paid last year and we increased our turnover as well Anyway not complaining. If anybody from arbinsure is on here, could you explain how being a member of the Arb Ass warrants 15% discount.
