  1. I know it probably sounds a bit strong but thats what i am feeling from clients and people i speak too.. I personally feel that if we try to take the industry forward too quickly without fixing the basics it will most likely go jugs up... I know thermal imaging sounds lovely but as an industry we cant even decide on basic rules and guidlines, if other industries could really see the chaos we are in it would be hilarious for them. I suppose that then leads onto where is the root of the problem ? the simple answer being very poor leadership and representation by the AA. Sorry, to put it back on thread. Maybe we should put all this technical mumbo jumbo on the shelf and get our mallets and increment boarers back out and learn to walk before we can run. Have a nice bible passage to make you think 1 Corinthians 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. Can anybody see the relivance
  2. Sorry Marcus but i still cant see the commercial viability of thermal imaging, just like the picus.... You could argue that a resistograph is ok based on price. I see the industry as wraped up in its own little important world, that without us everything will fall apart.... It is important to remember these three things * To 99.9% of the population trees are a real pain in the bum. * People wont pay for something they dont desperatly need (a tree report etc etc). * People will eventually realise that actually trees are not really a H&S threat, afterall they have never really been in the past so why now I do see the positives of your system in a purely research role (if it is first proven over the next few years). I dont mean to be negative but we work on alot of projects outside of arb and it has really put into perspective how we are all kind of seen as leaches on the old H&S bandwagon. By the way it may not sound like it but i do love trees and thats the only reason we are still offering services in the industry because to be honest there are a lot easier ways to make a living.
  3. I have a risk assessment for switching on the computers and making a brew On a serious note you are recommended to have them for the office and this should include the hazards of sitting incorrectly
  4. Hi Richard, we do engineering surveys for forest roads/tracks along with civil cad and our hardware we use this bit of software, is worth a look for you. Forest Engineering Software Also a FC spec http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/specforestroads.pdf/$FILE/specforestroads.pdf plus a few others..... http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/STATE_FORESTS/docs/management/roads_manual/RMSec4-Const.pdf http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/informationforthemerchant-haulier.pdf/$FILE/informationforthemerchant-haulier.pdf http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/specforestroads.pdf/$FILE/specforestroads.pdf If you can find it the best info will be on wind farm access tracks, a lot of these we have worked on are done to complete a specific job "temp site access on a budjet" as we have seen they are cheaply done but will prob outlast general roads Unfortunately i cannot post details of ones we have worked on for obvious reasons... http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/CefnCroesWindfarmAccess2.pdf/$FILE/CefnCroesWindfarmAccess2.pdf http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/FARRWINDFARMACCESS2.pdf/$FILE/FARRWINDFARMACCESS2.pdf
  5. Yes the nylon hammer comes in usefull as does the very large poking stick On a serious note if someone was to get approached and felt threatened they are to pop the sd card out and hand over the pda/gps unit...
  6. The biggest risk when tree surveying is probably coming across some scroats and getting mugged.....
  7. QTRA isnt really the tool for this, i would personally assess the area in polygons and use a risk matrix then apply QTRA to smaller groups/individual trees
  8. Shift the blame onto the supplier.... Ask them what its like, if they say it will be fine and then turns out to be useless tel them and say you wont pay
  9. We do alot of this for W-E projects, how accurate do they need the height data ? if its decimeter or .5m there is an extremely quick way of getting the heights. If you are stuck on measuring each tree just stick a day rate on it x an estimated amount of days. If you PM me your info i can email you info on how we do it...
  10. To be fair Marcus that looks fairly good, however i still question its commercial viability in day to day practice......
  11. The VTI course at Myerscough covers cores and fractometers...
  12. know that place well, knocked around there for 6 months when we set out all the wind turbines.... How much ?
  13. If a tree warrants drilling there must be some evidence that things are wrong... The last thing to worry about is if the drill may have a negative effect..
  14. Yep, what i am after is for trees in a woodland setting.... For instance Birch avg life is 60-70 years sycamore avg life is 100 years etc etc.....
  15. Thats great, thanks for the reply, there was a spread sheet as well with differing species and there estimated life span, was a really good pdf...
  16. Does anybody know of a reference for estimated life of trees by species, i am sure the FC did a pdf but cant find it. Thanks in advance
  17. Cheques will be gone well before that. This mobile phone payment thing is being trialled including sending payment by sms. More scary though is the microchip inserted into your hand/arm..... VERY SCARY. I personally cant see cheques being around for more than another year or so, i know 2018 is the date set, but already most people wont accept them.
  18. Sorry , wrong end of the stick, just used to him being slated like M Ellison, its defo a thing in this industry if you do any good people get a bit green eyed and resort to slagging off.... Apoligies
  19. I will ask him next week and post the info !
  20. Nothing wrong with JFL, he is a master esp on the legal side
  21. Actually no, my mate has one that runs through a sim card, he pays £120 a year rent and a flat rate of £2.50 per transaction on over £100.... Its a rugged unit as well
  22. I just add £5 paypal surcharge, domestic clients dont mind it as they will stick it on there credit card, no hassle etc..... We have a load of T&Ts, different ones for both domestic and commercial as our comercisl ones scare the bugger out of general j bloggs... As asked to set up paypal just go to there website and open a biz account, its free...
  23. The best thing i ever did was put at the bottom of every invoice - we now accept paypal. Add a little charge for this as well and you recive payments really quick from domestic clients as it enables them to pay by credit card etc....
  24. I am already going to the Autodesk conference in Las Vegas....... Dont think the wife will allow 2 US trips !
  25. I am pretty sure its from a plant hire company near us, like already said probably just not a gifted seller and if you have dealt with plant hire companies you will know how short and grumpy they are
