  1. had a mate in today subby climbing. (not a hard day, just pulled my groin ) he's just disolved a partnership with anothe tree surgeon and after a year working 7 days a week he's come out with his original climbing kit and a knackered old 200t. to make ends meet while the local work kicks off he's been subbing to the local travelling comunity his nickname for which is.....the 'do as you likeys' sorry but i find this hilarious
  2. we have a guy round us who sells "bulk bags" for £25-00. one of my regular customers collered me in our local asking why mine were so expensive. "you get the wood for nowt anyway" two weeks later the same chap was back ordering another cube, when i asked him why turns out the "bulk bag" was nowhere near full, and what there was in there was crap turns out he does get his wood for nowt, pays a couple of d%$k heads off the estate a tenner a day to cut em up. still only making £15 to advertise and deliver !!!!!!!!!
  3. we're in Steve. Got my first sale off the log directory this weekend. what i really need is a website, so i'll be trawling the schools this week to find me a 12 y/o who knows about these machines......
  4. Got to admit, i'm a sucker for the elderly. had a 2 cube delivery on saturday, the old dear came hobbling out. "just tip them there young man, and i'll move them round the back ( about 15' ) over the weekend. Heres your cash, would you like a cup of tea ?" by the time she'd got back with the tea, me and my 12 y/o daughter had stacked half the load.. get me every time......
  5. make one yourself. ours cost less to build. just need to befriend a decent welder
  6. we've thought about making a road going version. its on our 'list of things to do and make' lol.
  7. drop some glyphos in there.
  8. i need another chipper next week, if i put him on my christmas card list can i borrow one too ?????? PLEEEEEEEEEASE
  9. same as above. if your gaffers happy, use his gear while you can....but..... look after it as though its your grandmothers, and as well as paying for the gear. if you get a decent job, take your boss and his missus out for a meal once in a while. it'll go miles. good luck
  10. i know us yorkshire folk are known to be 'careful' with our money, but come on.... 13/15 year old tippers are STILL fetching £1000 to £2000 looking to increase our fleet with another tipper, do we spend a bit, and if the recent 14 hrs a day, seven days a week is a blip, no worries. do we spend a fair bit ( to me, a fair bit is £7000) on an 06/07 and again, if its a blip sell one of our older tippers for the stupid money that they're fetching. we scrapped an R reg LDV last year because it wanted £500 to get through the mot. bad move it seems. (although we did get nearly £500 for it scrap value )
  11. we use builder trestles. cost me a tenner apiece, weigh nowt, and adjustable height. i'll put pics up when i go to the yard
  12. yeah rover, thats what i was thinking. you'd also have to have the top, horizontal cutter at a slight angle.
  13. job 2 remove knackered old grass, and bushes. Stone, and plant the prunus. the rowan was already there, nice tree
  14. job 1 relay turf and fit slabing, and walling
  15. two jobs from last week. the second one was done for the nicest clients we've ever had. none stop banter from a couple who could've been on any comedy show. too much tea, coffee, and biccys. and at the end of the job the comment of "its exactly as i pictured it in my mind" was accompanied with a tear in the ladies eye of course it had nothing at all to do with the tenner she gave to each of my lads, and the £20 extra she gave me RESULT
  16. came away with a new 441 and bg86 blower vac. carrs were the cheapest on the day, but justin matched the price food ? forget it. take some packup with you. the queue was never less than 20 deep
  17. about the only problem i can see is alligning the splitting blades so the split logs don't trap, and that wouldn't need to much working out. i'm also thinking of a 3pl model. those tables look ideal for hanging over bags, or crates. no more picking split logs off the floor....mmmmmmmmmmmmm
  18. i like that!!!!!!! we cut all our cord into rings on site so that would be ideal. can see my local agg. engineer being busy soon
  19. hi tom, we made one from a breaker power pack. works ace. cylcle time is approx 3 seconds each way. will cut through most logs i was at an auction at the begining of the year and saw a diesel one, half as big again as ours. keeping my eye out for one of those now to build another, this time with a discharge conveyor
  20. we've got a 7" tracked Jensen. wouldn't have any other i don't like the disc type blades on the greenmechs. i've only seen the 'X' type legs on the larger machines (9") greenmech took jensen to court a few years back to stop them using the design. i believe jensen only made a few so you'll probably have to get greenmech if thats what you want. best thing i ever got into debt for my jensen. since buying it, ive never had to use a feeling bar, tirfor, or winch on most of the jobs we go on, we get people coming to have a look at her. we've even won a few jobs as i'm known locally as 'The bloke with the big tree eating thingy'
  21. we now have a towable 10 ton splitter, home made, runs off a powerpack. also 20 ton for the back of the tractor. had a race with one of the lads the other day, doing 6-10" ash he had the towable, i had my old, much abused, fibreglass handled £15 maul. i did a cube while he was still only 3/4 of the way through his !!!!! wouldn't want to do it all day though for the first three seasons, the maul was all we had. did everything from nice straight softwood, right upto seasoned Euch... the last winter before we bought the splitters, we sold over 100 cube. NEVER AGAIN.......pmsl
  22. we needed one early last year and TBH they were fetching supid money. contacted justin on here and he did us a new one for not much more. At least you then know it hasn't been abused
  23. £120 a cube....i can only dream. struggling to get £75 round here. thankfully, i only process and sell my arb arisings and i'm quite happy to stockpile it in the yard. my heart goes out to you firewood only guys, i really don't know how you make it pay. hopefully in two years time when the price of wood goes through the roof, i'll have thousands of cube, all split, dried, and ready for sale
  24. travelled south and east tonight to meet a fellow arbtalk member. never met him, or spoke to him before, but couldn't have met a nicer guy. made me and the kids ( i dread school holidays ) feel more than welcome. we did the deal on the piece of kit he was selling, and i even got a text asking if i got home ok. Everyone else i've met on here has been as welcoming Is it just me or does Arbtalk attract a nicer class of arborist.....
  25. my wife is on the local parish council, and is trying to raise money for some play equipment on the playing field. she tried to arrange a charity football match between the local kids and a team from the police. the parish's insurance refused to cover them, and a quote from another insurance firm would've taken all the raised funds. on the alloted sunday, an 'unofficial' match took place, and managed to raise £300...... Common sense ???
