  3. hi all, got to do some close board fencing next week 70 mts long 4 x 4 fence posts, rails, a 6" kick board, and feather edge boards question is, wheres the best place to get the rails from, and whats the best size to use. i based my quote on 3 x 2 treated, but saw some today that was around 4 x 1 1/2 (ish) i need 240 mts so if i can save 50p per mtr it'll be a good saving
  4. we run all our saws will smaller bars, 200t has 12" 341's have all got 15" 441's have 20" 880 has a 30" and the 4'er for serious stuff don't know if its right but i was told there's less wear on the engines
  5. £60 mtr3 of softwood, seasoned for 2 years £75 mtr3 of hardwood, seasoned for 1 year i'm at the more expensive end of the scale around here plenty of people doing builders bags for £30 i'm happy with the ammount we're selling but stocks are getting high so may have to drop prices to compete next winter. on the subject of fossil fuel pices, how long will it be before the government starts a watchdog for oil prices. bought 500 lts begining of Nov at 42p per ltr went to buy some between christmas and new year 73p !!!!!!!! a bit of argueing got it down to 68p but still a joke !!!!!!

  11. hi rob, the forum sounds like a good idea. still undecided about getting a mill made up, buy one of yours, or continue logging ?????? too busy to do anything else at the mo. definately look into it in the future, we're always trying to find ways to add value to what we cut
  12. all halfords pro range used to be manufactured by FACOM, don't know if it still is. i bought the £50 set last week.....doesn't seem as good quality as the older stuff i've got. The 3/8 ratchet broke on the first day, taking the rear seats out of the Transit. But, as long as its got a lifetime guarentee.....who cares. They may try and fob you off if you don't take the reciept...press on...the give in in the end....
  13. given up with work. been out and got a dozen jobs thanks to the weight of the snow, but told everyone we can't do owt till SOME of the snows gone !!!!!! booked up now till end of jan
  14. am i missing something here...... round here i'm lucky enough to have a good client base who can just about bring themselves to pay the £75-00 a cube i charge for mixed h/wood. if you're buying it for £60...how much do you get for a cube ?????
  15. Playing devils advocate here so please...don't jump down my throat toooo hard. We've got approx 50 ton of various harwood stems in our yard. cut over the last year. mostly 15/20' long varying from 10" to 48" dia. usual stuff, seem to have a lot of horse chestnut (never seen any for sale) a bit of 3' dia accacia, rest is birch, oak, etc Purely on a financial basis, is worth investing in a mill, storage, etc as opposed to just logging the lot up for next years firewood. Looking at the pics on here, apart from carving, can't think of anything more satisfying than milling your own timber to use on other jobs. However, we've all got bills to pay.
  16. got the guy to send pics of the three limbs
  17. i'll try and get some pics.
  18. Hi all, Went to look at a job yesterday, three largish snow laden limbs fallen into a garden from a neighbours tree. no problem. apparently when the client went round to tell the chap that some of his tree was in the wrong garden the neighbour in question shrugged his shoulders, said to my client "you're insured aren't you?", and slammed the door !!!!! thats all being sorted by clients insurance co. However..... the clients house sits about 4' from the boundary fence. 2' from the fence, in the neighbours garden there are three 30'+ Conifers, and a 40'+ spruce !!!! During the snow, the spruce apparently dropped a big dollop which took out the guttering, and half the soffit, and the needles constantly block the guttering. The trees were there before the house was built (its only about 3 years old) SO...... Has my client the MORAL right to demand the trees removal ??? discuss.......
  19. WOW !!!! :confused1:
  20. bob, sorry, not dave, AAAAAARRRGH too much Sloe Gin last night
  21. no dave we're not a charity although some people think we are the boy does it for a bit of spending money, we only sell by the cube, but, it does teach him a good lesson, and if it costs us one or two customers...ah well..

  24. hmmmmmmmmm......... i can't really see the difference between a bottle of whisky....and £20 a trip to oz......and a grand in an envelope...... its all back handers, sweeteners, thank you's, call it what you like.... we've done em all.... its all a big game to keep the client happy and coming back. there's no difference to your nectar, tesco, whatever loyalty card imo recently did a job for a site manager of a VERY large construction firm. did a good job, the chap was happy, so happy he recomended us for the next phase when the junior contracts officer rang, his first words were "i've been told that you're our prefered tree contractor from now" £12 K's worth of work later i saw the old site manager again, couldn't thank him enough. he wouldn't accept a thing, offered to take him and his wife out for a meal, no thanks, would you like a nice bottle of somthing (i'd have bought him a crate), no thanks, don't drink. his explanation... You did an excellent job, no hassle, we'll use you every time... also had the other end of the stick *******'s wanting cash back for jobs usually tell em where to go....but depends on the job
