  1. hi peter, we had notts cc's T/O round 4 fridays ago.... agreed there and then that the two willows in question were structually unsound and could be removed.... "just wait for the letter to come before you start" rang today and the letter is 'in the system' !!!!!! meanwhile, its raining branches in the clients garden
  2. think of your future. i'm 43 now and climbing's getting harder every day. what i used to do in a day, now takes two..... i had an argument in the pub a few months back. did some work for a plumber in the village on the understanding he did some work for me on an hour for hour basis. me and one of the lads did half a day for him, complete with tipper, chipper, climbing gear, saws, fuel etc..etc... he did a day (6hrs) for me, and expected some cash on top !!!!! "you only trimmed some trees up" was his argument mine was the fact that i'd got 30k's worth of kit to do his job !!!! for 6 months in college, 10k for van and tools, you're a fully qualified and equiped plumber able to do the job till you're 70 odd and earn £40 p/hour....no contest imo
  3. spent quite a while contracting on the railway, all price work. if we had to climb, unless it was a "ladder" tree, it got spiked. i'll admit, purely cash based policy. in someones garden......definate no no, the last thing one of my customers would want to see on their beloved tree is great big spike gash's. just my opinion
  4. put the long reach head on the polesaw...... go as high as the sky
  5. i started as am employed climber, went on my own, this week so far i've done 1 days tree felling, half a day mowing, half a day decking fitting, today i've been meeting Council highways people re a fence we have to erect, had a gang of lads gardening all week.... do whatever you have to to survive (apart from working for nowt)
  6. it'd help if i actually added pics...no???
  7. thanks to mat at f r jones.. not quite sure if the boys ready yet. i've told him, when he can start it, i'll show him how to use it his reply was " well who's showing you daddy ????"(smart arse)
  8. on another section of the job, thats exactly what we are doing, approx 180 ton of hardcore to come out, soil to go back, fence to erect, and hedges to plant.........
  9. the harcaore is 2' deep, and the clieent wants it leaving its at the entrance to a power station, and there is a chance that they may have to run wagons over it sometime in the future.
  10. 3 for me too but i'll use more on larger dia timber
  11. give all mine away. i've got about 60 ton available next week in Newark, Notts if you want to come and fetch a load. unfortunately, no hgv access so about 40 trips in transit should kep you in chip for a few years
  12. as stated above, you have to be sponsered by a linkup approved contractor. also pass medical, and a D n A (Drugs and Alchohol) test. they also have to be renewed every year, resit, and d n a's
  13. well gone for the new one. ms880 c/w 4' bar sick of buying other peoples cr*p mat, over at fr jones and sons sorted me out ( thanks very much) pics to follow
  14. best i've had the ldv is 6.75 but it did have the chipper on too !!!!!!!!!!
  15. hi all, been asked to price for a load of work, part of which is to grass over an area of limestone hardcore. my question is...... how much depth of topsoil would the grass need to grow without the limestone killing it, and would it be better turfed, or seeded. thanks in advance, dave
  16. 4.375
  17. Hi all Looking to buy an 880. We'll only need it 7/8 times a year, i'm guessing, so not looking to spend £1500 on a new one. We've been offered a second hand one, 2007, for the right money My query is this......... The one i've used in the past have all been fairly new.. With the new style "tooless fuel caps". The one we've been offered has a toolless cap on the fuel, but the older style, stick the combi spanner in, on the chain oil..... Is this some form of cross over model (one of our 034's has new style caps but front tensioning ??), or could it be an older saw which has been rebuilt???? Any thoughts, Also, we've been thinking... Would there be a market for hiring these out.... Obviously, you'd have to be selective with your clients i.e. only renting it out to people who can either show the relevant tickets, or demonstrate suitable knowledge. The courier we use for the sheds has said he's happy doing a two day delivery on an 880 with 4' bar for £15 each way... One to think about
  18. hi steve, unfortunately, yes they do. Any vehicle over 3.5ton you say sell em at £10 a load. by the time we've ringed a load up and transported it £10 wouldn't covwer fuel, lol one of the local "men who can get you anything" started buying em off me at £30 for a very full LDV load, ringed up to approx 10". After the third load he didn't want any more "Too much like bloody hard work" were his exact words..PMSL
  19. Been thinking for a while now whether to bother with logs at all !!!!!! Too much work, too much investment required, time, hassle etc If i could wave a wand so every customer wanted the logs leaving on site...i would We're due to start a nice little job the day after the bank holiday. Clear a site for a new ASDA. Approx 70 odd ton of S/Birch, Ash, and Oak to get back to our yard and process. Site rules state NO hgv access, so its all got to come back on transits !!! So thats two men, two transits (one of which i'll have to hire) running the 45mins each way to and from my yard.. The ammount of times i've heard "You get your logs for free !!!!" AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH sorry rant over
  20. all this talk of 'ongoing assesment' is fine for all you lot in large companies or LA's, with deep pockets. What about the army of us out there, battling to survive, 1 climber, 1 qualified groundie ( if your lucky, some donkey from the pub if your not) Where does the money come from ???? I've paid for two lads to do their CS 30,31. (at a cost of about £1000 a time) One left after the first winter. The other went contracting on the power lines. The time comes when you think "hold on a mo" The current lad i've got has been with me for 16 months now, uses his own saws at home, but, according to my insurance, he can't use them at work. i've told him i'll put him through the course, but if he leaves within a year i'll be wanting the fees back. He's said he's not bothered about doing it then !!! What to do. As for putting myself through more tickets, paper work, expense !!!! We're currently working 7 days a week (of today coz its honking it down so doing paper work....errrrr:blushing:) Discuss
  21. Had a customer call into the yard the other day looking to place a log order. Showed him the crates i store my logs for drying in and explained that as the crates were 1000mm x 1000mm x 1200mm which equals 1.2 cu/mtr, we sold that as 1 cube........ No problem... Next he asked for weights ?????? My reply was as i didn't have free access to the weigh bridge 1 mile away, i sold all my logs by volume.. Guessing, i'd say an average crate holds between 750 and 950 kg's We then had half an hours discussion about the various weights of logs (no, i haven't got anything better to do with my time...honest ) This ended in me getting 1. a seasoned ash log 2. a seasoned oak log 3. a seasoned holly log and just for comparison, a WET softwood log giving all to customer, and asking which he'd prefer... The holly log weighed about twice as much as the ash,( i know which i'd prefer) "I'll have to tink about it", and off he tootled..... Did i do wrong trying to educate
  22. the biggest one we've made so far was 12' wide x 8' high x 3' deep which by my calcs held approx 7.odd cube !!!!!! don't fancy filling that !!!!!
  23. hi, if you search for "rustic log store" on ebay, we'll come up. if that dosen't work search in the members area for "dn22gardening" we've sold 280 so far we'll custom build to your customers exact requirements. thanks, dave
  24. hi all, i've got an old 044 which i fancy 'tarting' up. is there owt on the web that'll give me an idea of where to start. if anyone knows of a haynes manual for modding saws that'd be great...lol thanks, dave
